Minor wear and soiling to text missing pp.15-16 but no evidence of removal. Still good. Handsomely illustrated catalogue of carriage- maker G. & D. Cook & Co. of New Haven displaying eighty lithographed images of different carriages with a brief history and description of New Haven. G. & D. Cook & Co. was founded in the 1850s and collapsed in 1861 under the economic pressures of the Civil War. They reformed as a joint stock company but that also failed. During the Civil War the company manufactured an early form of bullet-proof vest for Union soldiers at the front lines. Catalog from 1897 measures 14 x 11 inches folio deep red cloth stamped in gilt very good some small scattered abrasions to rear cover. Although the catalog is from Cook & Watkins in Boston it is stamped John W. Holt Farmington PA on cover: this was a Fayette County business near present day Nemacolin and Fallingwater. The catalog has 60 sheets of lithograph designs of stone concrete granite and marble monuments. In addition there are 128 loose sheets of monumental designs dated from 1895 to 1903: 63 sheets measure 13 x 11; 42 sheets measure 11.75 x 9 and seem to be taken from 1901-1903 issues of "Granite" magazine; 9 sheets measure 12 x 9.5 and are gravure photos and finally 14 sheets measure 18 x 12 on slightly thicker paper lithographs in faint gray-blue tone dated 1895 and featuring monumental designs by Charles H. Gall - whose offices were 127 N. Dearborn St. in Chicago. In addition there is a zipping leather briefcase measuring 15 x 11 x 2 inches holding 8 polished granite samples each of which measures 6 x 4 inches. All in very good condition. The advertisement for Henry Austin Architect is a tinted plate which includes a hand-colored woodcut of his office on Chapel Street New Haven. A six-page article on New Haven in 1860 with a railroad map of the shoreline from New York to Boston is also included. Leather bindings with dark red leather spine labels. Covers well worn front hinges of both volumes broken but holding rear hinges starting. Shiny glue residue on each spine and hinge from an earlier attempt at repair. Folding table torn at fold discolored from old tape repair. Modern bookplates. A good set.</p><p>First Dublin edition. 2 volumes of a 4-volume set complete within itself. The Beddie bibliography notes two 1777 Dublin editions. The first is part of a 4-volume set. "Binder's title: Cook and Forester's Voyage. Consists of the two-volume Dublin editions of <em>Cook's Voyage to the south Pole</em>… and Forster's <em>Voyage around the World</em>… 1777 each volume having two title pages." Beddie. This set only has one title page. However the "Directions for Placing the Cuts" include directions for plates in <em>Foster's Voyage</em> labeling the volumes as 3rd and 4th in the set. The two volumes of Cook's Voyage offered here are labeled as the 1st and 2nd volumes of the set. While only the Cook volumes are offered here it is complete in itself. The official account of Cook's second voyage and his first as commander of the Resolution 1772-1775. The success of Captain James Cook's first voyage led the Admiralty to send him on a second expedition which was to circumnavigate the globe as far south as possible in search of any southern continents. The men on this expedition were the first to cross the Antarctic Circle. Further visits were made to New Zealand and on two great sweeps Cook made an astonishing series of discoveries and rediscoveries including Easter Island The Marquesas Tahiti and the Society Islands Niue the Tonga Islands the New Hebrides New Caledonia Norfolk Island and a number of smaller islands. A significant association copy probably in a presentation binding inscribed by the compiler to the novelist's son on a preliminary leaf: "To Charles Dickens Esq. with the regards of the Compiler James Cook Aug. 27 1879." Cook's BIBLIOGRAPHY "made with a set of the various Works as they were originally published in parts or in volumes" precedes that of R.H. Shepherd Manchester 1881 and several items directed at collectors such as Johnson's HINTS TO COLLECTORS 1885. Cook provides "such particulars as are necessary to give the Bibliophilist or Collector a thorough knowledge of the peculiarities of the several editions". The food conspiracy movement originated in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1968 and soon developed into a network of autonomous collectives. Members combined their resources to buy in bulk from farmers and suppliers allowing them to access better food at lower prices.<br /> <br /> <p>The Tucson co-op's commitment to affordable health foods was part of a broader anti-capitalist ethos. "The basic purpose of the Food Conspiracy is to serve the needs of the people" begins Article 7 of the bylaws. "We feel that our purpose would be to provide an economic political and social alternative to the individualistic capitalistic society." The scrappy newsletters are filled with information about women's health United Farm Workers strikes the American Indian Movement and much more providing a window into the turbulence and optimism of 1970s radical liberation movements. The archive captures nearly every possible view of the industrial operation including employee offices and canteen storerooms the company's fleet of Chevrolet delivery trucks and garage and of course the bakery itself. Remade as the Broadway musical "Two by Two" in 1970 by Richard Rodgers Martin Carnin and Peter Stone starring Danny Kaye.
