Dinner featured Chowder Baked Mackerel with Tomato Sauce Fried Eels - Jewish style Saratoga Chips Clam Fritters Soft Shell Crabs Quahogs Indian Pudding Ice Cream Watermelon & Peaches and Ponham Spring Water. Also noted the 1891 Executive Committee and the Providence Warren & Bristol Train schedules. <br /> <br />A private club with a membership of 200 shareholders opened in 1867 as a place for gentlemen to network over shore dinners of lobster steamed clams corn and potatoes. The club grounds included a ball field miniature clock and obstacle golf courses bowling alleys and it's own wharf. This area in Providence known as "Riverside" hosted the Crescent Park Amusement Park known as the "Coney Island of the East". Along the Providence River west of the club is the Ponham Lighthouse which is still standing today. The club closed in 1954 and the property was redeveloped for condominiums in the 1980's. Privately printed in 1932 for the Members of The Society. A captivating look into beer making in the last years of Prohibition. This association was made up of men in the Brattleboro Vermont area including the editor Vrest Orton a peer of Robert Frost. Writing about the origins of "The Company" A.P. Wallace states "We were originally drawn together by one great compelling thirst in common. This is plain But there was more. Up here in Vermont where 'The Company' started a corner of the land once noted for its independence we still hold to a vestige of the quality so rare in the modern world. I refer of course to the love of liberty." Wallace goes on to explain the need for home brewing referring to the low quality of commercially produced beer. This book which is annotated throughout by a hungry observer is a scientific observation of the product and how to make it. This menuwritten by Halliwell a local master of ceremonies and freemason was made to accommodate and service the 3rd and 4th battalions' officers of the West Riding Regiment formerly known as the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. The officers were lodged in the De Grey Rooms neo-classically designed and constructed by architect George Townsend Andrews in the 1840's. The building was originally built to house the Yorkshire Hussar Regiment. The menu describes breakfast luncheon and dinner with served dishes that include tea coffee bacon and eggs kidneys cakes salad soups sweets ices and more. Menu also informs the officers of prices to pay per diem for services and the charges the guests and live-in servants must pay for board and food. The second page lists the sums for individual drinks. Delightful acquisition for a connoisseur of English military history. Light fold marks with some toning. <br/><br/> unknown books
