Small quarto 210x210mm burgundy silk cloth gilt lettered boards in matching slipcase; xvi422pp. Slight and small blemish to the slipcase recto else fine. All the illustrations in this book were engraved in boxwood by the artist and the edition printed directly from the artist's blocks thus making all the illustrations artist's original prints. Tate Adams AM was an Australian print-maker and engraver. Widely regarded as the 'Godfather' of contemporary Australian printmaking Tate taught printmaking to many of Australia's greatest print-makers established print specialist galleries and founded and supported Lyre Bird Press to print high calibre printed works. Wynns Coonawarra Estate is a famed winery in the township of Coonawarra South Australia. Coonawarra is region that has a singular story based on a unique cigar-shaped strip of terra rossa soil over limestone. Established as a 'fruit colony' in the 1880s the region provided grapes for many of the great wines of the early 20th century. After a long period of significant decline the region became known for quality wine again after David Wynn established Wynns Coonawarra Estate in 1951. Through the second half of the 20th century Coonawarra and particularly Coonawarra Cabernet was one of the most sought after wines and wine regions in Australia. Older vintages of Wynns 'Black Label' and 'Red Stripe' hold a special place in Australian wine lovers' cellars and hearts. Over the years David Wynn engaged a number of artists and writers such as Tate Adams and Walter James to record and celebrate the Coonawarra region and Wynns Coonawarra Estate. Eylaud a native of Bordeaux was a doctor of medicine and sociology who devoted his life to the promotion of Bordeaux wine. Poet novelist essayist dramatist speaker journalist vigneron doctor and intensely involved in fields as varied as sociology medicine oenology local history literature and theatre Eylaud founded the Doctors Friends of Wine and the International Medical Committee for the Scientific Study of Grapes and Wine to defend wine in the light of medicine. A prolific writer Eylaud published a large number of works many on the wines of Bordeaux during his lifetime. He was also a champion of Montesquieu and the founder and president of the Académie Montesquieu in Bordeaux. Gautier-Constant 1907-1978 engraver and illustrator was also a native of Bordeaux from the Gironde and Professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. Oliver 1909-1990 also a native of Bordeaux was the chef-patron of Le Grand Véfour in Paris one of the greatest traditional restaurants of France holding three Michelin stars from 1953 until his retirement. Delightful and poetical musings anecdotes composing a biography of wine from Parnassus until the 1960s by a devoted lover of the wines of Bordeaux elegantly illustrated. A signed presentation copy from Foillard to Michel Trone of Chatelard Lancie a significant site in Northern Beaujolais thanking him for the provision of important documents during the preparation of the book.Â Foillard was a French wine merchant writer and local politician.Â Together with Tony David he operated Foillard & David a negociant in the region.Â Colloquially referred to as the 'father of Beaujolais' Foillard was an active promoter of the wines of the region.Â He was the founding member with Godart of the Order of the Companions of Beaujolais and received the Legion of Honour in 1948 for his tireless efforts in developing the reputation of Beaujolais wine; a reputation continued today by his relatives particularly the celebrated producer of Cru BeaujolaisJean Foillard.Â The author of the foreword Godart 1871-1956 was the Mayor of Lyon and a French Government minister and a life-long champion of the wines of Beaujolais.Â Philippe Charles Burnot 1877-1956 was a French artist and engraver also from the Beaujolais region. In 4° (mm 249x170); carte non numerate 12. Cartoncino rosso con medaglione al piatto anteriore raffigurante l'allegoria di Bacco e Cupido ebbri da un olio di Jean Leon Jerome conservato a Bordeaux. Elegante custodia amatoriale eseguita da Ennio Torri, legatore in Milano, in mezza pelle con angoli e piatti marezzati; dorso con cinque nervi, titolo su tassello in oro. Internamente raffinato astuccio in tela ocra. Edizione di 151 esemplari numerati a mano realizzati per l'Associazione Italiana Collezionisti di Cavatappi. Il nostro è logicamante l'esemplare N° 1 come testimoniato dall'exlibris dello stesso Gabbani al contropiatto. Alexandre Lainez autore di questo poema, (riportato in anastatica) è uno di quegli spiriti imprigionati in una bottiglia, lasciata a prender polvere sopra uno scaffale, in attesa che un bevitore o un cantiniere vengano un giorno a liberarlo. L'autore nato a Parigi nel 1650 muore nel 1710, lascia questo suo singolare inedito sul cavatappi, unico per la data (anteriore al 1710) e per l'utensile di nuovissima invenzione. Lo scrittore a circa 50 anni di distanza dalla sua dipartita ebbe meritata gloria (viene editato a La Haye, 1753). Voltaire gli riserva il rango di "poeta singolare uno dei più colti e briosi del suo tempo". Egli stesso si era affibbiato il soprannome di "Nuovo Epicuro". Il poema offre una versione divina dell'origine del cavatappi: gli dei Cupido e Bacco, sappiamo diffidenti l'uno verso l'altro, un dì s'incontrano fortuitamente in un cantina, decidono di fare pace e suggellare il loro accordo e bere insieme una bottiglia. Purtroppo il tappo è stretto e non può essere rimosso senza l'aiuto di uno strumento; così infine Cupido che non dà mai fondo ai mille trucchi della fantasia inventa il cavatappi curvando una freccia presa dalla faretra. Meraviglioso esemplare perfettamente conservato. Ex libris di Roberto Gabbani.
