2237822 February 1855. Benhall Benhall Vicarage near Saxmundham Suffolk. See Mitford's entry in the Oxford DNB. At the time of writing he had been retired for five years from the editorship of the Gentleman's Magazine a post he had held for seventeen years. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged with minor traces of mount adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Folded twice. Forty-four lines in a close hand. The recipient is not named but the letter comes from the papers of the Cullum Baronets of Hardwick House and concerns an obituary of the eighth baronet Sir Thomas Gery Cullum which Mitford is helping a member of the family prepare for publication in the Gentleman's Magazine. Mitford begins the letter: 'My dear Sir I have just sent to the Post with a few alterations verbal ones the contents of the letter you favored me with this Morning; and hope it will be in time to be inserted with its Corrections in the Magazine this Month'. He explains why given the importance of the changes he has 'asked Mr Nichols i.e. John Bowyer Nichols 1779-1863 printer and proprietor of the magazine to delay the insertion till the March number'. He gives a hint of how the Gentleman's Magazine consisting of 'a good variety of Articles' is conducted before continuing: 'I very much lament that I had not the pleasure of a more intimate acquaintance with Sir Th. Cullum to whom I have of late been obliged by many kind Civilities in return for favors I had asked in relation to a branch of which as you observed he lov'd & patronized.' He continues with reference to the baronets 'love of gardening & planting' in which Mitford 'fully participated' . He describes a rare plant seen on a visit to Hardwick at which he went over 'his Plantations with him & umder his guidance' before referring to the last letter he received from him 'of which the ink was scarcely dry' when he died. He concludes with his 'best Compliments & respects to Lady Cullum'. 22 February 1855. Benhall [Benhall Vicarage, near Saxmundham, Suffolk.]. unknown

Some light rubbing to some spines generally a very well-preserved collection. Sheypoor magazine a very scarce periodical were printed in India by a company called 'United Publications' during the Second World War. These publications were directly part of the war propaganda efforts in middle eastern nations this particular one with the Farsi speaking areas in mind. The periodical includes not only militaristic content but also beauty lifestyle and fashion. Though Iran was officially neutral when war broke out in 1939 many Iranians were sympathetic towards Germany which they hoped might liberate them from years of British and Russian oppression. An increasing German presence combined with British concern for continued supplies of Iranian oil led to Operation Countenance an Allied invasion launched on 25 August 1941. As a result Reza Shah was deposed and replaced by his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Iran was forced to abandon its neutral position though it did not actually declare war against Germany until September 1943. From 1941 onwards British propaganda published by the Ministry of Information MOI played a crucial role. Favouring a cultural approach the MOI produced items such as the Sh hn mah cartoons by the artist Kem and the magazine R zg r-i naw or The New Age which was published quarterly in Persian between 1941 and 1946. This was more of an intellectual periodical with little pictures United Publications Delhi, 1943-46. unknown

As New/None As Issued. First Edition/First Printing. 170 pages. Deja Vu Quarterly Special Edition. Retrospective of the photographer's body of work. The best introduction to Larry Clark's obsessive oeuvre. The Quarterly's Issue Number 13. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. An Import title none of the copies was commercially distributed in the United States. There is no ISBN. The Issue is now rare. A stunningly beautiful production by Photo Planet Publishers Tokyo: Oversize-volume format. Glossy pictorial softcovers which show a Larry Clark "suicide" image boy with a gun in his mouth on the cover with titles on the cover and spine as issued. Photographs by Larry Clark. Text in Japanese and English originals. Small section devoted to Sebastiao Salgado appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white thick glossy stock paper in Tokyo Japan to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is outstanding in every respect as one has come to expect of Japanese publishing. Without DJ as issued. Presents "Larry Clark Deja Vu Magazine's Quarterly Issue #13". An 87-page retrospective on Larry Clark that is sumptuous and representative of his body of work. The continuity and internal coherence of his work are the result of his preoccupation with one subject: The troubled drug- and sex-addicted and apparently suicidal American youth. His imagery is generously selected for the reader and even more important presented in a significantly larger - therefore superior - format than the original volumes themselves: "Tulsa" "Teenage Lust" "1992" and "Collages 1989-1992" a selection that includes a Centerfold foldout which appears in this publication only. The Interviews with Clark are illuminating. The Sebastiao Salgado section at the end is a bonus albeit in stark contrast to Larry Clark's gritty vision. An absolute "must-have" title for Larry Clark and Sebastiao Salgado collectors. This is a copy of the Deja Vu Magazine Quarterly Issue Number 13. It is very boldly and beautifully signed in black ink-pen by Larry Clark. It is signed directly on the page itself not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know this is the only such signed copy available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean crisp and bright. Please note: This is an Import title. None of the copies was commercially distributed outside Japan. Copies available online have serious flaws yet are priced as though they had collectible value. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with photographic plates. Larry Clark's "Tulsa" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". Both "Tulsa" and "Teenage Lust" were selected as two of the "Seminal Photography Books of the 20th Century" in the "Book of 101 Books". One of the most influential photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. SEE ALSO OTHER LARRY CLARK TITLES IN OUR CATALOG. Photo Planet Publishers Tokyo paperback

191062099New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1910. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A strong Very Good with Richard Sugden library label. See scans and description. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers 1910. Tall octavo - in fact near quarto at 9 11/16" - buff cloth boards with black spine imprinting buff endpapers very thoroughly illustrated throughout with both color and black and white plates and photographs; 976 pp. iv 972 . A very strong Very Good clean but for some cover soiling scan; thin crack at front hinge nonetheless sturdily bound; contents immaculate. Richard Sugden Library label at front pastedown but no other library marking of any kind. Rather astonishing in its illustration and topical articles; many color plates - with a passel by Howard Pyle - and many black and white plates as well. If you have a hardbound six-monthly from this era of Harper's you know what the "many" in "many illustrations" means. The photographs - such as those in "The Making of a Telescope" the Mount Wilson Observatory - are of magnificent quality for publications of that era. Every last illustration and photograph in these 972 pages is eminently frame-worthy - but don't ever do that. See scans of contents pages for the articles herein. Artists include Howard Pyle Thornton Oakley F. Walter Taylor Elizabeth Shippen Green H.G. Williamson James Montgomery Flagg Harry Townsend Howard E. Smith - and one hack of a lot more. Scarce and a treasure. Ships in a new sturdy protective box of course; not a bag. L7n

Harper & Brothers Publishers hardcover
