19060001393BELGIAN CONGO ALBERTVILLE 1906. On offer is an original letter written in English dated Haut Upper Congo Nov 14th 1906 by an unknown female writer who appears to be the wife of a missionary who was being prosecuted by the Congo Police casual research suggest this is possibly the British Reverend Edgar Stannard. The letter specifically refers to implication in the "Commandant Hagström affair." The tremendous political controversy surrounded a charge of libelling Congo police officer Hagström made by the Governor General of the Congo Free State and King Leopold against the Reverend who accused Hagström of practicing brutality and cannibalism. Arthur Conan Doyle also described exploitation and atrocities in his book "The Crime of the Congo." . Very Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown

1903250806003Raleigh North Carolina: Self-published Reverend Morgan Landon Latta 1903. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Rare true first edition of the controversial autobiography of Reverend Morgon London Latta.

IMPORTANCE

Born into slavery from a background of poverty from which he successfully emerged Latta is a polarizing historical figure. In some circles Latta is recognized in as an important leader in Black education during post-Reconstruction. For others he is a fraudulent schemer whose autobiography was found to be filled with falsehoods and exaggerations of the truth that were used to exploit Northerners into donating to fund his university Latta University donations largely misappropriated for personal use - a scandal which ultimately shut down Latta university and tarnished his image.

Condition- VG - ex-library.

Note: I rarely sell ex-library but a true first edition of this infamous and fascinating "autobiography" rarely comes up for sale. All other copies I currently see listed as of this posting as first editions are actually the 1923-24 reprint. This copy would be a $3-5k book if not ex-library.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Self-published in 1903 by the author in Raleigh North Carolina. True first edition first printing as indicated by green cloth with brown black and gilt pictorial decorated top cover with the central image of a rural cabin scene and the correct 371 total pages the reprint of 1923-1924 with the 1903 copyright was significantly expanded to 600 pages. Octavo 8 3/8" x 6" 371 pp. Black and white photo illustrations.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Rev. Morgan London Latta L.L.D. 1853 -1937 was an African American educator who operated a fraudulent scheme to solicit and misappropriate funds. He founded Latta University in Raleigh North Carolina and used it to exploit the goodwill of Northern donors during the post-Reconstruction era. Despite the exposure for his criminal misconduct which brought an end to his school and standing Latta's legacy continues to be commemorated in Raleigh as a pioneer in Black education.

Latta founded Latta University in Oberlin Village an antebellum enclave established by free Blacks in West Raleigh. Latta University received its official incorporation on February 15 1894 following the acquisition of land in Oberlin Village and fundraising efforts to finance its construction a process spanning three years. Latta traveled across the North making speeches and fundraising for the university. Despite numerous primary accounts and documents revealing his autobiography to be false it played a crucial role in his fundraising efforts and decades later in establishing his legacy.

In 2019 Morgan Latta was inducted into the Raleigh Hall of Fame stating "Reverend Latta's history and legacy continues to inspire children from all backgrounds through programming by the City of Raleigh and the Latta House Foundation."

CONDITION REPORT

VERY GOOD - ex-library. Library numbering stamp on spine stamp on bottom of introduction page and rear pastedown with the library card and pocket for Hartford Public Library in Connecticut.

The book was donated to the library by Henry J. Belden. His name appears on the gift bookplate of the library and his name is signed in pencil on the introduction page. Front board a bit loose. Sun-faded spine. Rubbed extremities. Corners bumped several large stains on back board and top text block edge. Mildly rubbed top cover. Lightly toned pages. Darkening and cracked gutter between two pictures preceding title page. Some creasing a few bent page corners. Text block is clean and bright. Only a few light finger smudges along the margins.

All in all a very scarce example of the true first edition an important and controversial historical book. 1822631
2-volume set 1822 first editions

John Campbell 1766-1840 was a Scottish missionary and traveler. He was passionate about Christian philanthropy which led to his founding of the Magdalene Society in 1793 and the Missionary Magazine Edinburgh in 1796. He travelled to preach in neglected villages promoting the establishment of Sunday schools. The Magdalen Asylum to help prostitutes in England and Glasgow founded by Campbell was one of several societies he created to help those in need. He opposed the slave trade and became involved in the Society for the Education of Africans. Through collaboration with James Alexander Haldane he brought 30-40 African children to England to be educated. In 1812 he was sent by the London Missionary Society to inspect mission stations at the Cape. His account of the trip was published in 1815 on his return titled "Travels in South Africa undertaken at the request of the Missionary Society". Campbell returned to the Cape in 1819 this time to improve those mission stations that had fallen into neglect. In 1820 he travelled north from Cape to Mosega in Barotseland and the Kaditshwene settlement near the Limpopo River. He left Cape for England in 1821 and published two further volumes covering his journey.
Francis Westley hardcover

1837010705Menomoneville Wiconsin Territory 1837. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page stampless letter sent from the Reverend Daniel E. Brown at Menomoneville to the Reverend Philander Chase "near Peoria / Illinoise" measures 16" x 9.75" unfolded. It is datelined "Mission Buildings Green Bay / April 3rd 1837" and bears an especially scarce manuscript postmark "Menomoneville Apr 5" of which only one other example is recorded by the Wisconsin Postal History Society. In nice shape

In this letter Brown requests clarification as to whether the few churches that had been established in Wisconsin would remain part of the newly formed Diocese of Michigan or form into a separated organization. It reads in part

"I have presumed to address you upon a subject of much interest to the religious community of Wisconsin which . . . is of serious importance to the Church. It is presumed that the question whether Wisconsin is yet a part of the Diocese of Michigan as claimed by the worthy Prelate of that Diocese . . . or are we separated & no longer for and integral part thereof. . . This question is now assuming a very serious aspect for the Vestry of Christ's Church Green Bay. . . There are now four resident Clergymen in this Territory . . . three in the employ of the Board of Domestic Missions. We have but one organized Church who has no Rector the Rev R. F. Cadle having resigned. . . It is also anticipated that . . . a church will be organized at Milwaukee & also that the Garrison at Fort Winnebago will organize themselves into a Parish. I have felt . . . as if it was unwise to agitate the question in our present situation & particularly as it regards questions of jurisdictions with Michigan but I would wish your advice. For if we are fully separated from Michigan & have the right to form a new Diocese . . . it would be prudent to do so. . . Will you be kind enough my Dear Father to give me your views upon the claim set forth by the Rt Rev Prelate of Michigan & whether . . . it is right now expedient to organize at this time. . ."
. When Wisconsin was part of the Michigan Territory from 1818 until 1836 Episcopalian fell under the purview of Missionary Bishop of the Northwest. Its first mission the Oneida Duck Creek Mission originally under the Diocese of New York at Green Bay was the beginning of Church work in the MIdwest. After the Diocese of Michigan was formed in 1834 Wisconsin activities were place under the temporary supervision of the Bishop of Ohio and did not come under the oversight of the Bishop of Michigan until 1836 after which he maintained that the establishment of the Wisconsin Territory had should not divide his diocese successfully thwarting the establishment of a Diocese of Wisconsin until 1847.

For more information see Ford's A Brief History of the Diocese of Michigan and "Oneida History" at the Milwaukee Public Museum website.

A first-hand document attesting to the religious competition that sprang into being with the establishment of the Wisconsin Territory. At the time of listing nothing similar is for sale in the trade nor has appeared at auction per the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows no similar items held in institutional collections. 1972133104Austin TX: Pyramid Publishing Company 1972. First Edition. First Edition. SIGNED by Roky Erickson on the front flyleaf. With the original circular red "Autographed Copy" sticker affixed to the front board.

A book of poems written by Erickson legendary singer and songwriter for the 13th Floor Elevators during his stay at the Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane in Rusk Texas. The only physical evidence of his creative endeavors made between electroconvulsive shock therapy treatments which included the formation of a band with fellow inmates called The Missing Links and reportedly writing nearly 100 songs.

Working with his childhood friend George Kinney Erickson published this volume while still institutionalized. A collection of 45 poems nearly all of which are extremely positive and upbeat "Let's Have a Never-Ending Love Contest" "When You Get Delighted" and "Thank God for Civilization" are a few examples. Outside of anthologies perhaps the only volume of poetry ever published with the poems arranged in alphabetical order.

Erickson would take a different turn upon his release forming a hard rock band called Roky Erickson and the Aliens writing almost exclusively about Satanism and riffing on classic horror films. Toward the end of the 1970s he again went into a long period of mental decline and has only recently begun to perform again. A rare title nearly impossible to find with a contemporary signature.

A second collection titled "Openers II" containing Erickson's song lyrics essays and interviews was published 23 years later in 1995.

Very Good plus in moderately soiled white cloth-covered boards a gilt peace/cross symbol design on the front board gilt spine titles and no dust jacket as issued. 1915CAT0127New York et al. 1915. Silver gelatin prints roughly 8 x 8 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 inches the last on a larger mount. Very Good. In 1914 Francis Red Fox James now presumed to be related to the Blackfoot tribe rode a horse across the country seeking states' approval for an American Indian national holiday. He delivered endorsements from 24 states to the federal government but a commemoration never materialized. The Washington Herald reported that James rode 4000 miles from a Crow reservation in Montana and was received by President Wilson to discuss the possibility of a "national Indian's Day" in October. Washington Herald 12/16/14

Although his mother was probably Blackfoot James claimed Native American heritage only as an adult. He changed his name by adding "Red" and later "Skiuhushu" to Francis Fox James. Two of the images in this collection contain familiar tropes of American Indian portraiture but the third offers an arresting image of James holding the American flag aloft as a kind of offering. This enigmatic gesture could be read as evidence of an optimistic belief in a mutual relationship between the US and American-Indian nations. It is also undoubtedly related to James' interest in legitimizing his Indian heritage as the founder of the Tepee Order a youth organization addressed mainly to white Protestant children. By 1920 the Order had evolved into an adult secret fraternal organization shrouded in mysticism. James was also associated with the Boy Scouts; he is credited with organizing the first All-Indian Boy Scout Troop in 1915.

In The Search for an American Indian Identity 1970 Hazel Hertzberg writes that James "was deeply troubled by his degree of Indian 'blood.'" In addition to changing his name several times to seem more "Indian" he theorized that his Welsh ancestry was pre-Columbian using the Tepee Order to create a kind of third space a "pan-Indian society" that was neither Indian nor white.

We find no other examples of these photographs though a US flag does appear on James' saddle in a photo documenting his White House visit. One picture signed by James with "Indian in Prayer "Great Spirit. / Red Fox James. Blackfeet." on recto and the following on verso: "A Gift / To my dear Friend / Eugene Beaton / c/o Burns Studio / Bucyrius sic Ohio. From Red Fox James / Blackfoot Tribe." Generally a very good collection with some fading to images but well preserved overall. unknown books
1796007817Philadelphia : Re-printed for Richard Lee by Dunning Hyer and Palmer - Printers 1796. First American Edition. Hardcover. Spotting is minimal appearing substantially confined to the endpapers and page edges. The same single clearly vintage owner name is inked to the upper right corner of each title page.

This U.S. edition RE-PRINTED FOR RICHARD LEE in Philadelphia in 1796 by DUNNING HYER AND PALMER PRINTERS followed the British edition of 1795 J. Ridgeway London. This work was the product of the incarceration of the author - Reverend William Winterbotham 1763-1829. Winterbothams prosecution was a celebrated instance of overreaction by the authorities through nervousness in the wake of the French Revolution.

The sixth of fifteen children Winterbotham left school after an argument with the schoolmaster and thereafter apprenticed to a silversmith. He eventually started in business for himself as a silver buckle-maker but illness forced a temporary return to his parents. His early dissolute life changed when he underwent conversion. In 1787 he began to preach and in 1789 became a Baptist. In this newly found zealous life he ran afoul of the politics of the day.

In a sermon on 5 November 1792 on the double anniversary of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot and the revolution of 1688 Winterbotham made reference to the French Revolution and to contemporary abuses as he saw it of the contract between king and people. This aroused local feeling and a prosecution was talked of. In an attempt to put matters right he preached a sermon on 18 November but on 25 and 26 July 1793 he was tried at the Exeter assizes for both sermons and found guilty. The result was a significant fine and imprisonment most of which he spent at Newgate prison.

It was in Newgate that Winterbotham wrote An Historical Geographical and Philosophical View of the Chinese Empire as well as An Historical Geographical Commercial and Philosophical View of the American United States. Upon release from Newgate in November 1797 Winterbotham returned to preaching. He was publicly ordained in 1801. He was frequently invited to preach around the country and in 1812 was one of the signatories to the formation of the Baptist Union.
