First edition in English; first printed in Leiden in 1727 as Matheseos universalis elementa. "This work translated into Dutch 1728 and English 1752 sic is of didactic rather than original merit but it was significant for its invitation to mathematicians to elucidate systematically Newton's Universal Arithmetick which 'sGravesande exemplified by his own explanation of two passages from Newton's book. 'sGravesande found the lighthearted treatment of infinitesimals and the infinite in Bernard de Fontenelle's Elemens de la geometrie de l'infini Paris 1727 unacceptable and he maintained his objections in the Journal litteraire against Fontenelle's rejoinder 1730." – DSB V p. 510. This is the most advanced textbook on Cosmic Physics and Meteorology of its time. "His acclaimed textbook on physics and meteorology Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie was published in four parts.6 Also it was translated into German by Johann Heinrich Jakob Muller and published with the title Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie." – Wikip. "Pouillet's lectures — which were partially collected in his Elements de physique experimentale et de meteorologie 1927 and in the Lecons de physique de la Faculte des sciences 1828 — were widely read. Pouillet published a popular account of Elements in 1850. Although offering no spectacular novelties they presented in clear language a survey of the state of the various branches of physics and of recent developments in them." – DSB XI p. 111. / A much revised and expanded version of what was originally Pouillet's Elements de Physique Experimentale et de Meteorologie 1827 which Muller translated into Lehrbuch der Physik und Meteorologie 1842 and then expanded with the supplement Lehrbuch der Kosmischen Physik 1856. It was eventually taken to a ninth edition by Pfaundler 1886-98 and finally revised and expanded yet again by Pfaundler into this final edition including an additional volume Magnetismus und Elektrizitat 1909 written by Walter Kaufmann 1871-1947 and Alfred Coehn 1863-1938. The final version unifies almost a century's worth of effort in various disciplines into a single textbook. F. Vieweg, 1905-7, 1909. hardcover books

This groundbreaking commentary was considered a “funnel of sorts†for previous rabbinic and Medieval commentaries on the Mishnah for it collected explanations from Rashi Maimonides Bertinoro and Tosafot Yom-Tov. It also drew heavily upon Isaac ibn Gabbai's commentary. This work was originally in Amsterdam in the year of 1732. This is the later reprint from Berlin printed between the years 1832-1834. Age wear and scuffing to leather some Hebrew script handwriting on front endpapers but books are in overall good condition. I. Lewent hardcover

3477Signed 'J Van H' lower right. Pencil and watercolour `IV' watermark. A beautiful image of a single Mallow stem with pink flowers.

Jacob van Huysum was born in Amsterdam in about 1687 a member of a renowned family of professional flower painters who enjoyed considerable success in Holland. His father was Justus van Huysum 1659-1716 and his brother Jan van Huysum 1682-1749. Jacob painted in much the same manner as his brother and as with his brother's work many of his drawings betray the temperament of an artist rather than that of a botanical illustrator. His 'work especially in England has often been mistaken for his brother's. Van Huysum came to England about 1721 in which year he was living in the house of a patron Mr. Lockyear of the South Sea House. Subsequently he was patronised by Sir Robert Walpole who received him as an intimate of his house at Chelsea and employed him to paint flowerpieces. for the decoration of the great house at Houghton in Norfolk' DNB . He also provided the majority of the drawings for the 50 illustrations to John Martyn's Historia Plantarum Rariorum London: 1728-38 as well all the drawings to another work Catalogus Plantarum. A catalogue of trees shrubs plants and flowers London: 1730. The present drawing shows the painterly approach where the artist whilst not sacrificing botanical accuracy tries to capture the essence of his subject. His work offers a contrast to the more strictly scientific approach of Georg Dionysius Ehret his younger contemporary and sometime colleague.

Cf. Henrey II p.213. unknown

It seems likely that this collection of attacks on the Bohemian Brethren the Unitas Fratrum was meant to curry favor with Pope Leon X - and it apparently worked because he spent years at court beginning not long after. The attacks on the brethren echoed the attacks deployed by Malleus Maleficarum author Heinrich Kramer's esp. "Excusatio fratrum valdensium contra binas litteras doctoris Augustini" and their centrally misogynistic framing. Ziegler interestingly converted to Protestantism in 1532 and had most of his works entered into the index of prohibited books. His humanist sympathies are evidenced by the Roman typeface chosen here unusual at the time for a theological book printed in Leipzig.

Ca. 12 copies in OCLC very rare in commerce.
