"The significance of Henle's book lies in its long opening essay 'Von den Miasmen und Contagien' in which Henle formulated on the basis of deductive reasoning his conviction that living organisms were the cause of contagious and infectious diseases. Drawing upon a wide body of work performed by other researchers on the origin of infectious diseases such as Bassi's recent demonstration of the parasitical nature of muscardine disease of silkworms Henle argued that infectious agents had to be organic in nature since they appeared to multiply from the moment of entering the body a statement supported by the fact that a certain period of incubation usually precedes the outbreak of disease and only organic life has the property of growth. The fact that infectious agents could be destroyed by heat and disinfectants also suggested their animate nature. Henle assumed that each infectious disease had its own etiology but realized that such views would be difficult to prove; he therefore proposed that an agent constantly found in association with a particular disease be isolated and tested in its isolated state to see whether it could produce the disease. 'This approach to the proof of the germ theory Henle communicated to his pupil Robert Koch and was forty years later to become one of the cornerstones of classical bacteriology under the name of "Koch's postulates" ' Foster "He laid down postulates on the aetiological relation of microbes to disease which became fundamentals of bacteriology." 1695621831695. Halae : Typis Christophori Salfeldi 1695 Kl.4° 16 6 pp. marmor. Broschur; feines Expl. Sehr Selten - Erste Ausgabe! B.J. 66492Complete set of seven etchings van der Vinne realized when he was just eleven years old. All the plates are copied after Adriaen van Ostade's works and are in reverse. The set is stitched on the left as a small album. The set is signed on the first etching: 'Jacob Vander Vinne fecit et excudit / ANNNsic! 1699'.The frontispiece features three heads of old men the one in the middle in a square frame the ones on the sides in rounded frames. The second plate 'The seller of Spectacles' has been retouched with pen and brown ink on the fence of the window on the top left. The third plate 'The empty jug' shows three peasants in an inn conversing around a table looking at an empty jug. The fourth plate depicts a knife grinder working in the middle of the street. On the bottom of the fifth plate the 'Pater Familias' is an inscription in Dutch: 'Eet soete kintjes eet je livertjes sijne Reet'. The sixth plate shows a small concert as in an interior a man plays the violin while a woman sings and another man sitting opposite to the woman sings along with a glass of beer in his hand. The last plate from the set is a copy after a painting by Richard Brakenburg 1650-1702. Possibly this last impression is the same etching inv. Riis's work created attention to the neglected and overseen community that was the underprivileged in New York. In the long run the great success of the work created attention to the status living conditions and general health of the poor and it initiated social reform movements in all major North American cities. Furthermore the work is regarded the very first example of "muckraking" journalism and was the first to extensively use halftone photographic reproductions in a book.Riis used a convincing combination of facts from Dr. Roger S. Tracy Registrar of Vital Statistics and his own talents as a photo journalist to make a hitherto unseen powerful description of the correlation between the high crime rate drunkenness and reckless behavior of the poor and their lack of proper homes. The statistical facts made it a relevant and sober work and lent it enough authority to the book's claims for it to be taken serious by city official. His groundbreaking photographs confirmed the dry numbers and "spoke directly to people's hearts". Pascal "Jacob Riis: Reporter and Reformer" p. 87. Unlike all previously works on the living conditions of the poor "How the Other Half Lives" offered concrete solutions on how to improve living condition how to make the tenants improve their buildings and finally how the politicians and city officials could make the appropriate and necessary juridical changes. The effect of the work was immediately seen and included: the tearing down of New York's worst tenements sweatshops and the reformation of the city's schools. The book led to a decade of improvements in Lower East Side conditions with garbage collection sewers and indoor plumbing all following soon after. Because of the present work Riis quickly rose to fame and in 1895 he became close friends with Theodore Roosevelt then a New York City official who wrote of Riis: "Jacob Riis whom I am tempted to call the best American I ever knew although he was already a young man when he came hither from Denmark". After Roosevelt became President he wrote a tribute to Riis that started: "Recently a man well qualified to pass judgment alluded to Mr. Jacob A. Riis as "the most useful citizen of New York". Those fellow citizens of Mr. Riis who best know his work will be most apt to agree with this statement. The countless evils which lurk in the dark corners of our civic institutions which stalk abroad in the slums and have their permanent abode in the crowded tenement houses have met in Mr. Riis the most formidable opponent ever encountered by them in New York City."The title refers to the French writer François Rabelais who famously wrote in Pantagruel: "one half of the world does not know how the other half lives". As a work of journalism and of social criticism Riis's book still stands as a truly seminal testimony to how the lower classes lived at the turn of the century. Due to this work attention was eventually paid to them and their conditions bettered. hardcover

Complete first volume Starting with Vol I Nr 1 of “Der Kibitser†Dec. 15 1908 renamed and renumbered first as Vol I Nr 1 Jan 22 1909 of “Der Groyser Kibetser The big kibetzer†with the following issue of Feb 5 numbered as "3" to correctly follow from the first issue and then with Vol I Nr 6 March 19 1909 onward as “Der Groyser Kundes The Big Stick†or “The Big Prankster.†Incidentally the other set of this volume we examined also did not have a Nr 2 so we are confident this is complete as issued.
One centerfold cartoon by Zuni Maud see image features "Der Kaptialistisher Tayfel"--the Capitalist Devil–holding back a "mother" by the hair to stop her from interfering as "baby's milk-bottle" is drained off by the "milk-trust" cat.
The caption reads "The Capitalist Devil: - to the mother: Never mind madam all in English in Hebrew letters you go to the factory the milk-trust will take good care of your baby."
This cartoon-laden periodical was a New York City Yiddish language satirical bi- weekly which ran from 1908 until 1927.
The humor paper was issued biweekly this volume for its first 20 months and then weekly after that. OCLC also references another Vol I Nr 1 from April 15 1908 a special S´imhes` Toyreh Simchas Torah issue but this may have been a one-off.
Founded by the humorist Yosef Tunkel or Der Tunkeler his pen name meaning 'The Dark One' the paper was taken on by Jacob Marinoff when Tunkel left to work for an established paper in Warsaw. The paper consciously set itself up in opposition to the serious Yiddish-language press of the time such as the socialist Forverts.Naturally more traditional religious Judaism did not escape its satire: The later 1915 "Christmas" edition included a parodic conversation between Jesus and the prophet Elijah.
Despite its irreverent attitude to everything it also published poetry by Di Yunge "The Young Ones" poets such as Moyshe-Leyb Halpern and Zuni Maud. At its height it had a circulation of 35000 but folded in 1927 due to flagging sales. Der Groyer Kunds is highlighted in this recent talk by Yiddish comics scholar Eddie Portnoy on the reactions in the Yiddish press to restrictions on Jewish immigration to the US: https://www.yiddishbookcenter.org/collections/archival-recordings/recorded- programs/ybcr-nybc-ybcr-1048/door-slams-shut-reactions-yiddish-press-immigr ation .
SUBJECTS: Yiddish wit and humor -- Periodicals. OCLC: 28297536. Most holdings appear to be fragmentary and do not include these issues. Issue 18 with torn cover. In final issue the bottom margin suffers some loss to the final leaves none to the dramatic front cover though. Cats was a Dutch statesman and writer of emblem books a type of popular seventeenth-century literature consisting of woodcuts or engravings accompanied by didactic verses pointing a moral or presenting an ethical concern often related to love and marriage. Dutch artists of the Golden Age including Vermeer used such books as inspiration for motifs in their paintings and prints. The sources upon which Cats draws for this combination of emblem literature and love poetry are chiefly the Bible and the classics and occasionally Boccaccio and Cervantes. His first book Sinne-en minnebeelden "Portraits of Morality and Love" contained 96 emblematic engravings with text in Dutch Latin and French each emblem with a threefold interpretation expressing what were for Cats the three elements of human life: love society and religion. Perhaps his most famous emblem book written in a more homely style than his earlier works is Spiegel van den ouden en nieuwen tyt "Mirror of Old and New Times" with 128 emblematical engravings accompanied by quotations many of which have become household sayings. Two other works—Houwelyk 'Marriage' and Trou-ringh 'Wedding Ring' with 59 plates—are rhymed dissertations on marriage and conjugal fidelity. Finally in one of his last books Ouderdom buyten-leven en hof-gedachten "Old Age Country Life and Garden Thoughts" with 27 plates Cats writes movingly about his declining years.
