Separately issued as a supplement of the collection of Van der Aa Naaukeurige versameling der gedenk-waardigste zee en land reysen. - Jacob Janssen de Roy's book the largest single description of Borneo printed during the century which probably appeared in 1698 or 1699 for the first time is an extended apologia written to the governor-general and council at Batavia by a skipper who had lost his ship on the coast of Borneo in February 1692 as a result of the mutiny of his largely Chinese and Javanese crew. He and his shipmates barely survived hunger thirst exposure hostile natives and treachery before receiving good treatment and protection from the king of Banjarmasin in return for military assistance. Despite obtaining trading rights for the VOC Roy was outlawed for absconding with the ship's money and subsequently sailed as a free trader in the Indies visiting Borneo Sumatra and Siam. Having acquired a considerable fortune from his enterprises he was employed by the king of Siam to dispose of a certain English pirate who was visiting Siamese waters. The Roy's account includes brief descriptions of both Brunei and Sukadana although most of his description concern Banjarmasin. He also provided European readers with their first published description of Borneo's interior and of the people who lived there Lach Asia in the making of Europe III p.1390-1395. - Including an extensive description of the gold and diamonds mines on Borneo and the pirates of Palembang. - A fine copy. 1775032819
London: T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter 1775 A very good 3 volume set with 29 plates some text engravings and 3 maps as called for in contemporary full calf bindings. Jacob Bryant 1715-1804 is chiefly known for this work which attempts to link the mythologies of the world to stories and events in the book of Genesis. It was seen as an important publication and is credited with influencing the work of William Blake. Blake was apprenticed to the engraver James Basire whose name appears at the bottom of most of the plates and is believed to have worked on them. The bindings are in very good clean condition and have been rebacked at some point retaining the original spines with gilt decorative compartments and red title labels. The boards are in very good condition with some corner wear. The marbled endpapers look to be contemporary with repair at the joints. There is the armorial bookplate of William Orme Foster 1814-1899 to the front pastedowns. He was an iron and coal-master owning the firm of John Bradley and Co and was MP for South Staffordshire 1857-68. All 3 volumes have page markers and all page edges have been yellowed. Volumes I & II are 2nd edition; Vol III is a 1st. Vol I: half title; title; preface pp v-xvii; blank; plate list p xix; text 1-516 with 10 'plates' of which the final is un-numbered and inserted at the end of the text. Vol II: half title; title; plate list pp iii-vi; text pp 1-535 with 19 plates one by Cipriani and one by Chambars - the final plate un-numbered and at the end of the text. Vol III: half title; title 1776; preface pp v-viii; text pp 1-601 with 3 maps 2 of which are folding and one of which is credited to Basire. There is a final engraving before the Finis. Contents are in very good condition. The occasional page is toned and there is very occasional spotting mostly on the final blanks. There is offsetting from the plates only one of which is tissue-guarded. The offsetting affects pages before and after the plate. There are a couple of ink amendments to mistypes in Vol III. The rear bottom corner of Vol II is quite fragile as are the front corners of Vol III.
T Payne; P Elmsly; B White; and J Walter hardcover

1779262121779. Wien apud Rudolphum Graeffer 1779 8° Titelvignette 176 pp.; Venetiis apud Franciscum ex Nicolao Pezzana 1779 64 pp.; Ledereinband d.Zt. mit reichl. Rückenvergoldung. Rare First Edition! Joseph Jakob von Plenck's 'Doctrina de morbis veneris' 1779 is the venereology counterpart to his famous 'Doctrina de morbis cutaneis' and one of the earliest systematic Latin handbooks devoted specifically to venereal diseases written from the perspective of an 18th-century Vienna-based clinician. It is important because it applies an Enlightenment-era classificatory and nosological framework to venereal diseases at a time when "morbus gallicus" and related conditions were still conceptually fluid. By systematizing syphilis gonorrhoea and other venereal affections into defined classes and species he helped move venereology from a predominantly empirical-practical art toward a more theoretically ordered branch of special pathology parallel to what he achieved for skin diseases. In the broader history of dermatology the 1779 first edition stands as an early link between cutaneous medicine and venereology in Central Europe foreshadowing the later 19th-century fusion of "Haut- und Geschlechtskrankheiten" as a combined specialty. Joseph Jakob von Plenck 1738/1735-1807 was a Hungarian-born physician who became professor in Vienna and is often named as the founder of Austrian dermatology. "In demselben ist keine einzige der damals bekannten Formen dieser Erkrankung übergangen." Lesky 511; Proksch II 438 Duparc - A very rare first Latin edition with only one copy recorded in the ICCU of this work by the renowned French physician Joseph Jacques Gardane who was my professor at the University of Montpellier: In this work the author describes a simple method for the treatment of venereal diseases. The author had already addressed the subject some ten years earlier in his work 'Recherches pratiques sur les différentes manières de traiter les maladies vénériennes' and the study presented here is a supplement to that work in which the author introduces a new simple method of treatment. Originally composed in 1612 this mystical text brought charges of heresy against Böhme but went on to shape the course of German theosophy Pietism and esoteric philosophy. The Aurora sets out his vision of creation and divine order blending philosophy astrology and theology into a spiritual cosmology that would influence generations of thinkers.

The engraved frontispiece "Aurora" and accompanying emblematic plate continue the tradition of the Gichtel engravings first introduced in the Amsterdam editions of the 1680s by Böhme's follower Johann Georg Gichtel. These images became the definitive visual expression of Böhme's cosmology and were reproduced in later editions such as this.

Bound in black pastepaper with veined pattern pastedown with a manuscript spine title.

It is in Very Good condition with light foxing in places a small stain at pp. 121/128 scattered toning and an ownership inscription on the endpaper dated 1857.

The inscription "J. L. Jacobi Gotha 1857" likely refers to Justus Ludwig Jacobi 1815-1888 Protestant church historian and professor at Halle who wrote on early Christianity and heterodox theology. His field of study and the place and date of the inscription align closely with ownership of Böhme's Aurora making this a probable provenance. Berlin and Leipzig: Christian Ulrich Ringmacher unknown
