The plates some of them cuttings from publications compliment and illustrate the text of the facing pages. Sixteen of the plates are in color including a two-fold symbolic battle scene by Rolandson. Of the 338 b/w illustrations two are folding plates. One of the Orchestra Organ in Westminster by W. & J. Walker and one of the Temple of Concord by J. Pass. <br /> <br /> The volumes contain engravings some printed to tissue paper lithographs drawings and woodcuts several of them fit into cutout framing or pasted to art paper. Very good: light wear a hint of toning to leaves.<br /> <br /> This is a detailed and heavily illustrated travelogue written by an AME Zion Elder and religious educator Jacob W. Powell. The first three pages of the book include a detailed chronology of Powell's life along with his numerous certifications related to religious teaching. From it we learn that Powell was born a Methodist Episcopalian in 1866 and converted to the AME Zion Church in Boston in 1881. He worked as a stenographer for a number of religious and civil clients before becoming ordained a Deacon and later Elder. Powell served as Pastor of a few AME Zion and Baptist churches and according to this book's dedication taught over 4000 students during his 54-year career. <br /> <br /> The book is simultaneously a travel log travel guide and collection of Powell's short essays on various religious subjects. It relays Powell's account of his six-week tour and is broken up into 25 chapters each with numerous subdivisions. Powell described his observations of myriad sights and experiences throughout Rome Naples Genoa Marseilles Alexandria and Cairo and Palestine. He related an incident involving a “Mohammedan lad†who took a liking to him and his group while they were visiting mosques surmising that “perhaps my similar complexion helped to draw him toward me†and of whom he snapped a photograph angering a crowd of adults who had gathered nearby. His writing while often rambling is also often action-packed such as this near accident returning to Marseilles:<br /> <br /> “ANOTHER THRILLING INCIDENT—as it looked to me our ship came perilously near 'going on to rocks' just before we reached the narrow outlet from Marseilles Harbor . . . . jagged rocks loomed ominously on either side of this narrow outlet as the 'Excalibur' pushed her prow forward. Hardly any saw the danger until the Captain in the pilot house looked out of his window and shouted to his deck officers 'Throw out your sheet anchor!' Immediately the command was obeyed good discipline aboard this ship and the staunch vessel stood fast within fifty yards or so from the perilous rocks!â€<br /> <br /> Powell's descriptions are complemented by detailed historical and geographical data as well as 60 plates of maps illustrations and photographic images. He clearly intended this to be a guide book as well as he provided histories of seemingly countless tourist destinations as well as information on languages locals cities he did not get to visit and more. He also waxed on many religious topics including the history of Christianity provided brief statements of the beliefs of Muslims and Jews and devoted four pages to his outline on the symbolism of the book of Revelation.<br /> <br /> Also of note is a rare piece of ephemera laid in to the book: Powell's promotional order form for this book as well as others he'd written along with a number of blurbs.<br /> <br /> A meticulous and well-illustrated travelogue and collection of religious essays by an African American educator and religious leader. Overall a very good copy.<br /> <br /> First edition of this compendium one of two issues the other published by Johann Coster in which nine celebrated early modern Christian hebraists advance their views on the original pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton YHWH. The celebrated hebraist and Old Testament scholar Adriaan Reland 1676-1718 judged by Bayle to be one of the most learned writers of the eighteenth century is best remembered for his works on Jewish antiquities. He edited various other collections of essays and dissertations including Analecta Rabbinica 1702; Dissertationes miscellaneae 1706-1708; Dissertationes de nummis veterum Hebraeorum 1709. "Greatest" is here interpreted by Strutt in various ways: tallest largest girth largest spread oldest etc. The preponderence of the examples given are oaks 21 but he also includes examples of elm 6 beech 2 ash 2 chestnut 4 cedar 3 yew 3 and one each of lime poplar willow plane maple sycamore Scotch fir silver fir and larch. This work was first published by Strutt in 1826 in a folio format and was available by subscription at 9 guineas for the normal issue or for the issue with the plates on india paper 15 guineas a list of the subscribers to this folio edition is included in the present octavo edition. For the present work the folio plates were reduced and the folio text was modified to allow for the re-ordering of the trees into more coherant groupings. As with the folio edition this work was offered in two forms: at £1 11s. 6d. for the normal issue or 3 guineas for the deluxe issue with the plates on india paper as here. The early owner of this copy William Russell Grace the co-founder of W.R Grace and Co. was an American success story who rose from relative poverty to be one of the richest men in the country. As well we find a milage scales to convert Dutch English & French leagues to degrees. The maps are very accurately engraved towns harbour-places sandbanks depths are marked. For this she was punished with exile and the King went on to marry another strong-willed woman Esther. The tale was especially familiar to 17th-century Dutch audiences for whom Esther had come to symbolize Netherlandish resistance to Spain.  <br /> <br /> The first part of Cats’ word-playing verse adaptation whose title may be translated as The Theater of Manly Respectability is a long speech in the Queen’s defense and in defense of all women followed by a speech against her and in favor of “Manly Respectability.†The work concludes with the Judgment which is that Vasthi should obey her husband because women’s subservience to men is a law of nature. A final poem titled “Aller Princessen Spiegel aller Vrovwen Spoor†is illustrated with an engraving showing the humbled queen wearing a yoke around her neck. The parallels and differences between the Biblical Ahasuerus and Herodotus’ tale of King Candaules supplied in Latin and Dutch translations in an appendix whose wife’s rebellion was more successful are fully exploited by Cats and by the illustrator Cats’ usual partner the painter and engraver Adriaen van de Venne whose brother Jan published the edition.<br /> <br /> Van de Venne’s engravings notably the scene of Candaules’ naked wife being surprised by Gyges served as models for a number of Dutch painters. The Van de Venne brothers played a central role in the dissemination of Cats’ poetry and it is their joint production that makes the works come alive: “The complete works of Cats together with Van de Venne’s illustrations formed a sort of housebook of the Dutch people which remained popular for two centuries.†Bol p. 117.<br /> <br /> Following the privilege on the title verso is a letter from the publisher to all bailiffs officials and readers â€Noodige Waersschouwinge.†complaining of the many counterfeit editions of an earlier Cats work the 1620 Self-stryt and explaining how to tell them apart. This volume written by Jewella Civil War soldier had started the process of becoming a Mason but was interrupted two weeks later by joining the Union army in 1862. After serving in the winter of 1865/66 he became Master Mason. The book contains the stories of soldiers who when captured by the Confederates or the Federal Army once they were known to be a Mason were treated as brothers and well cared for. Cleary Jewell had solicited these stories as they are mostly signed by the former soldier/Mason who experienced these considerations. The book also contains a brief autobiography of Jewell as well as some thoughts on Masonry war and related subjects. The Masonry scholar Michael A Halleran wrote in the journal "Heredom" suggesting the Masonry affiliation aided prisoners on both sides of the conflict. Jewell's book is considered one of the earliest works addressing the Freemasonry's role in the Civil War though Halleran does criticize it for being "anecdotal." See volume 15 2007 of "Heredom."
