The signature matches examples of his signature which can be seen online at
www.kaplancollection.org/item/deed-simon-gratz-to-james-duncan-and-2b696467
The book then bears the donation bookplate of another later "Simon Gratz esq" 1837-1925 who was a prominent 19th-century Philadelphia lawyer educator and civic leader. The bookplate is from Gratz College which the later Simon Gratz helped found.
Nikelsburger takes on an apostate Jew Rev. Frey who is intent on converting his former coreligionists to Christianity. In his opening letter to Frey Nikelsburger does not hold back: "In your eagerness to convert the Jews to your way of thinking you make no scruples of converting and perverting the prophets by turning their words to a meaning which you conceive to be best adapted to your purpose; and in doing this you make them not only flatly contradict each other but themselves also."
"For American Jews Koul Jacob seemed an appropriate answer to Frey a Jewish convert to Christianity who had resumed his missionary activities shortly after his arrival in America. It was a well-tempered but firm refutation of Frey's arguments. Moreover its author was an English Jew and if American Christians were to take offense at it its European authorship distanced American Jews from it" Berlin G. Defending the Faith. 1678733Ingolstodt: Joannis Philippi Zink 1678. Hardcover. Fair. Three poetical works of early 17th century Jesuit poets bound into one binding with beautiful silver decorations covering the front and rear board. About the Literary Works - Three works are bound within: 1. 1672 De Cultu B. V. Mariae Elegiarum in three books not ""book three"" as it is often catalogued; all three ""libri"" are found within the printing by Antoine Deslions. 2. No title page bound in starts at A1 page 1 - Epigrammatum Selectrorum by Bernard Bauhuis 3. 1672 Silvulae Hendecasyllarborum by Jacob Bidermann About the Binding - No maker's mark is readily visible. The book was published in Ingolstadt where the silversmith family of Kienlin see book bindings attributed to Johann Adam Kienlin plied their trade. It was common for bindings of this time to have a silver spine but I see no hinges which indicate one might have been removed and the leather of the spine was decorated. Still a silver spine may have been removed and the board edges cut of their hinges. but removing the hinges seems unlikely. This book was sold in the 1924 Sotheby Sale of the Library of Dr. E Marion Cox. Bibliographic Details - All three works are printed by Joannis Philippi Zinck in Ingelstadt. The first and third work have a printing date of 1672; presumptively the middle work would also have been printed in 1672 the title page is not bound-in but Worldcat doesn't have record of a 1672 edition. The Deslions work is catalogued in Worldcat as OCLC 836616102 among others. The Bauhuis work is catalogued in Worldcat as OCLC 1088278417 with a printing date of 1678. The Bidermann work is catalogued in Worldcat as OCLC 78071635 among others. Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 13 x 8 x 3 cm. Leather binding with blind tooling. Over the front and rear board silver covers have been added; these are likely repousse hammered from the back side and are decorated in the French rococo style each with a proud central medallion. The front medallion is a woman holding a goblet and books the rear medallion is a woman holding her baby and guiding her child. The covers have been turned-in just like a leather binding. The silver clasps work and one clasp depicts a putti holding a spade and the other a lute. The endpapers are dutch-gilt the front one is missing the flyleaf and the rear endpaper shows a wonderful depiction of a lute player in gilt. Three works bound into one binding. The second work is missing its title page and any prefatory printed material it begins at page 1 signed A1. Pages - vi 106 128 title page vi 128 The third work seems like it might not have had a leaf bound-in; the first gathering is fifteen leaves instead of 16 but the catchwords match and nothing seems missing so it was likely a blank the binder chose not to include. Condition - See pictures. Silver tarnished with some bumps around the edges. Leather binding under is dried out. The spine is crazed and chipped from the head and tail; there is evidence of glue repair along the front and rear leather joint. There is a little rubbing noticeable on the leather under the silver covering the boards. Front flyleaf missing. Blank bookbinder endpaper mounted instead; some numbers written on it and the remnants of an auction ticket presumably. Text block has some toning throughout with occasional fox spots page edge bumps etc. A few pages seem slightly proud. The index at the back of the Deslions work insn't included. Also the title page and any intros are not bound in for the Bauhuis it starts on page 1. I see a very occasional annotation. Blank endpaper at rear has notes on which poems apply to different life situations. Rear flyleaf has a white mark at bottom and the fore-edge is a little rough; also several small holes which may be from binding. Joannis Philippi Zink

I think I can discern some Vestiges or Symptoms of some fortunate Events for this Nation & some convincing tokens of Causes which will re-establish the British Monarchy & revive the Lustre of the British Government. In a word I think the Day is approaching & to my naked Eye it don't appear to be distant when Rebellion will fall like Lightning from Heaven.

The Parliament Sir is lately convened. The-

Page 2

The first opening of it seems to be something ominous to the patriotic Faction; a Noble Lord & one of the chief speakers on the side of opposition in the House of Peers suddenly departed this Life at scarcely an Hour's warning two Days after the Parliament met. Mr. Ch. J. Fox whose oratorical abilities are well known was wounded in a duel & came near as I did learn to lose his Life about the same time. These Events together with the failure of all the Prophecies in the republican Papers - the Disasters of D'Estaing in his Fleets being wrecked & dispersed in a storm - The safety of the W. India Islands particularly Jamaica which was long ago announced to be taken - The inefficiency of the Spanish operations against Gibraltar - the great sickness & mortality which has carried off Thousands in the Camp of the Spaniards - the dissension between the Spaniards & French Admirals - the brave conduct of Sir Charles Hardy in maintaining the Sovereignty of the Channel & even riding triumphantly before Brest in spite of the Navy of France & Spain united - the Feuds & Animosities prevailing among the Rebels of America which betoken the Decline of their short lived Empire &c.

These things Sir I say have greatly chagrined the Members of Opposition & have sunkly abated the matter whereupon they used to display their Eloquence in the Senate.

You will excuse my enlarging here for having wrote you once before I did not intend a long Letter when I sat down but wd. only set you an Example if it may be allowed I who am professedly your Senior-

Page 3

-to do as I have done to miss no opportunity of writing to me which will afford much pleasure for I have few Correspondents these Days in America.

Present my respectfull compliments to Mr. Weeks - he may depend upon it I shall not trouble him w'th writing to him; I wd. not have it too well known that I wrote to so many which I seldom have. I cannot think Mr. Th- & his Party will be so unwise as to create any trouble to him when they know that he is properly appointed Missionary of Annapolis & that the People must have him or none.

Joseph Patten Esq. formerly an active man in that Mission and Representative for that County I think you must inasmuch as he once told me that he had often attended your Ministry. When you write let me know whether he be living & what part he takes in affairs publick & Parochial or write to him by Mr. Weeks.

If you know Doctor Jeffries of Boston who lives at Halifax I think please to make my compliments to him & tell him that Capt. Hall Master of the Ship in which we went from London to Boston in 1769 is a Prisoner in France. He was taken in the Andromeda Man of War was next in Command to Capt. Publisher's full brown morocco boards with blind-embossed decorations front board lettered gilt patterned endpapers all edges gilt

A vibrant and influential late 19th-century American ornithological work.

Jacob H. Studer created the present work with the aim of making ornithology accessible to a broader audience. Unlike earlier more expensive natural history folios Studer's publication was conceived as a more affordable guide for families schools and amateur naturalists an approach that contributed to its wide popularity and multiple subsequent editions the final appearing in 1903. The 119 chromolithographic plates many based on first-hand observation rather than copied from earlier works combine scientific clarity with a distinctly charming visual style. While less austere than Audubon and more accessible than the works of Baird or Ridgway the illustrations echo the warmth and immediacy of Wilson and his contemporaries helping to bridge the divide between academic ornithology and popular natural history. Studer's work serves as both a beautiful example of American chromolithography and a meaningful cultural artifact in the democratization of scientific knowledge at the turn of the century.

Cf.
