1629K5MCCM62BPJ1Haarlem: Adriaen Roman 1629. Modern red half leather green boards with manuscript short-title on front board. Small 4to 18.5 x 14 cm. With a cast ornament on title-page and 4 woodcut initials. One of four issues published in the same year of a pamphlet concerning the possibility of a truce with Spain containing the "considerations and reasons" proposed by the Dutch West-India Company WIC to the Dutch States General. After the loss of 's Hertogenbosch in 1629 the Spanish King Philip IV proposed a truce which left the Dutch Republic divided also causing debate between the Remonstrants Counter-Remonstrants and Calvinists who first wished to create unity before paying attention to Spain. The directors and shareholders of the WIC dreaded a truce with Spain since capturing Spanish ships was a large source of income for the company Piet Heyn had captured the Zilvervloot in 1628. It would also have thwarted the WIC intentions to conquer some Spanish territory in Brazil. With modern bookplate. Title-page slightly thumbed and a marginal tear in page 15/16 only just touching the text not affecting the legibility. Otherwise in very good condition.l Alden & Landis 1629/102; Knuttel 3911; STCN 830228950; cf. Asher 130; Sabin 15930-15931. Adriaen Roman, hardcover

Antonio Rodríguez de León Pinello compiled it by 1635 but it circulated only in manuscript until Fernando Jiménez de Paniagua brought it up to date and saw the result through the press in 1681. Prior to the publication of this massive work it was common practice for lawyers and courts in the various legal districts of the New World i.e. audiencias to compile in manuscript the laws in force in order that they might be used as precedents. Upon publication of this code the number of precedents did not as might have been expected decrease via "regularization" but instead increased: The courts continued to accept the cases and laws on point in the old local manuscript compilations and also those contained in the Recopilación! In sum this is a major work for all collections of international and Hispanic-specific law.

The first edition is very uncommon in today's marketplace meaning most scholars and collectors must settle for a later edition such as this fifth — which has the advantage of being handsomely printed in double-column format. This copy is attractively bound as well. From the library of Marcelo Martinez-Alcubilla noted lawyer and legal scholar. His bookplate is on the front pastedown and name in ink on the title page of each volume. A 20th century Madrid bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown of the first volume this covers a 19th century bookseller's ticket. Palau VI p 223; Sabin 68390. Boix unknown

First edition.

Cedula Latin means in general an order or authorization; in earlier times such a document on the authority of the king or a royal decree which for Spain and Spanish America was a decree issued directly by the monarch.

During the second half of the eighteenth century the Spanish Crown monopolized the tobacco industry in its American colonies creating vertically integrated organisations which included factories for the production of cigars and cigarettes. Few economic activities were more vital to the development of the Spanish American economies that the cultivation manufacture and commercialization of tobacco. Tobacco was the second most important export industry in Spanish America at the time. The decision of the Bourbon monarchs to monopolize the industry was a critical component of their plan to increase government revenues through a renewed contract with the colonists. This Spanish royal decree issued at the end of the War of American Independence to take effect January 1 1784 alters the basis for the tobacco trade set up as a monopoly under Phillip V and establishing new regulations for the business. This decree mainly affected the American colonies including Louisiana.

Condition:

Some soiling on front and back; last page has columns of numbers and damp-stain along edge one inner page heavily soiled near head else a very good copy in a fine enclosure.
