Comme précisé ci-dessus, le tome II est malheureusement absent et notre prix en tient compte. Très bon ensemble.

First and only edition of this surprisingly uncommon photographic souvenir of cruising down the magnificent Three Gorges of the Yangtze River which traditionally sailed from Nanjiang in Jiangsu Province to Chongqing. Originally these cruises were begun by the Qing Dynasty 1644-1911 emperors to inspect their territory cruising along in opulent wooden ships. Despite the first Sino-Japanese War 1895 the 1911 Chinese Revolution and other disruptions by 1915 the Yangtze River had become a popular tourist excursion riding paddle steamers in the early 20th Century. The photographs depict San Yu Tung Shooting a Rapid The Hsintan rapids Granary Gorge Patung Pagoda Kuantukou Wushan Gorge Wind Box Gorge False Gorge Shihpaochai Sampan Man A Casualty depicting a beached steamship and others. (Illustrated Scenes from the Life of the Sage, Confucius). 30x40 cm. chinese tex,t, maps, illustrations, portraits + 105 woodblock prints depicting the life of confucius, in the original chinese sewn binding. protected in later chinese style blue cloth box, with straps and ivory needles. a very good copy. scarce.A recent article by Chun Shum in the 'East Asian Library Journal' (Vol. 10, no. 1) provides a wealth of information on what amounts to an exemplary sub-genre of Chinese illustrated book production. In fact, scenes from the life of the Confucius are, arguably, at the fountainhead of book illustration in China. Illustrations of Confucius' life exist in three media: as paintings, engraved on stone (typically reproduced in collections of rubbings), and as woodblock printed editions. The earliest painted version were probably produced in during the Eastern Han period; three sets of stone engravings are said to exist; and there have been many woodcut editions of the Sage's illustrated life. The earliest printed versions are thought to date to the 13th century, but no such Song editions survive. There are several Ming editions. The quality of the illustrations and of the prints differ greatly. This one is taken fromt blocks that appear to be the best we have seeen.The present work is a late Qing edition, most likely a later printing from the blocks prepared by Kong Xianlan in 1874. This edition is noted and described in Chun Shum's article (pp. 153-55), and the sample illustration reproduced matches the corresponding images in the present work. All 105 images collated by Chun Shum are present, along with the introductory text taken from the biography of Confucius in the 'Shiji'. Quality of paper and printing indicate that this may be a somewhat later impression from Kong's blocks, impossible to date precisely. the impressions are clear and the book is a rich source of the visual imagery - based on earlier, Ming model - produced at the time. ÉDITION ORIGINALE illustrée de 160 photogravures et d'une carte hors texte. Georges Cormier (Paris, 1869-1955), pilote de tricyles De Dion et d’automobiles avait pris part au raid Paris-Pékin, mis sur pied par le quotidien « Le Matin » en 1907, à bord d’une Dion-Bouton. Il finit 3e au classement général de l’épreuve. Un an plus tard, il crée la première agence commerciale en Chine à Pékin; il en ouvrira une seconde à Shangaï en 1911. La course Pékin-Paris est considérée comme le premier grand raid automobile. Organisé par le journal français "Le Matin", le départ fut donné à Pékin le 10 juin 1907. Cinq concurrents prirent le départ. Trois seulement sont arrivés à Paris après avoir parcouru plus de 16000 km, en 44 jours pour le premier : 1er Prince Scipion Borghèse sur Itala 4 cylindres ; 2e Georges Cormier sur De Dion-Bouton en 64 jours ; 3e Victor Collignon sur De Dion-Bouton en 64 jours.BEL EXEMPLAIRE.
