Very rare copy of the luxury edition of this literary anthology on China, prefaced by Edouard Herriot, who writes (we translate) : "China has a right to the respect of every truly educated and civilized being. It is the doyenne of nations, our history, compared to his, it seems only a childhood Confucius, this nomad meditator, is not it the first type of minister philosopher? Future Deputy Minister of Railways, Tsen Tsonming lived in France from 1912 to 1925; Here he presents extracts from various authors, including Chiang Tzu, Shung King, Han Wen-ti, Han Yu, Chiang Tai, Su Chi, Wang Ying-Ming, Hoang Li-Tcheou, Tsai Yuan-Pei, and Wang Tsing. -Wei, Liyuying (the latter "founded in France Chinese language magazines to introduce the republican and socialist doctrines in China"). 1956Alibris.0038464Shanghai China: People's Art Publishing House: Hard cover. Very good in very good dust jacket. dust jacket is age-toned along spine and edges small tears along dust jacket edges. 148 p. Includes illustrations. . "Published in 1956 as publicity material for the new engineering projects depicted this book was also sold abroad through the China International Bookstore. The design of the book s cover printed in green with repeating stylized waves stands in stark contrast to the rather austere predominantly black-and-white photographs inside featuring dams and navigation locks sluice gates and river dredging operations. The term 'water conservancy' is popularly understood to mean not wasting water but the focus of this book is more in line with China s perennial water issue: how to control water. A country both rich in water resources and subject to frequent floods and droughts China has always prioritized development of large-scale water management infrastructure."
