367202Folio. Worn reversed calf. Solid. Folio. Dr Frederick Krecker was a Navy Physician and in practice in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania. After retirement he his wife and 3 children embarked on the "Orient" as their church's first Missionaries to Japan. Page 87-154 are his accounts of his work in Yokohama and Tokyo from 1876-1882. Accompanied by Miss Rachel Hudson and the Rev. and Mrs. A. Halbacher they arrived in Yokohama in 1876.<br /> The Doctor went straight to work ministering to those poor Japanese who could not afford healers and in company with Rev. Halmbacher spread the Gospel of their church Calvary He was among the first medical missionaries in Japan and the first from his church. He and his wife lived in Japan until he died from typhus on the 26th of April 1883.<br /> He acounted for all supplies and other materials sent by the church for his work in his household accounts. The last 2 pages cover his accounts with the Oriental Bank Corporation.<br /> After his death his wife moved back to Pennsylvania with her children in 1886 and lived there and East Orange NJ until her death in 1903. Two vols. 1 Oblong 8vo. format 7.75 x 6 in. w/ 11 leaves of thick card stock bound in accordion-style format w/ 22 hand-coloured tipped-in albumen photos 5.3 x 3.6 in. Lacquered covers gilt decorations of geisha on a lake w/ carved ivory head and boatman polling across the lake w/ trees in the background minor edgewear some thumbsoiling a few hinges repaired the images are still clear but there is occasional light fading & soiling still a very nice example; 2 4to. 64 pp. ruled paper w/ 89 hand-coloured tipped-in albumen photos 5.5 x 3.5 in. many labeled lower corner of image most with ink annotations below. Contemporary quarter-calf ledger book leather corners w/o spine couple leaves cropped occasional damage to a few images some over-exposed still a G- exemplar. These wonderful photo albums were assembled during Hallmark’s service in the U.S. Navy from 1895 to 1905 in the South Pacific and Asia. These albums focus on Japan and contain views of Yokohama the port of Yokohama the Sakawa Bridge geishas playing mandolins seagoing Chinese Junks Bushido sword practice Rickshaws transplanting rice drying sheets of paper Fish Peddlers Japanese tumblers who came aboard the ships to entertain sailors other street scenes Lotus Pond Kamakura Ymeimon Gate Nikko and many others. Many of the photos are similar images to those which were shot and hand-coloured for export by Tamamura and Kusakabe in the 19th and early 20th-century some of them having the same titles however these albums & photos do not have photographer’s mark. n.p., hardcover
