London 1790).
TIRAGE TOTAL A 960 EXEMPLAIRES.

197063284Osaka Japan: n.p. 1970. Folio. 12 x 13 in. 30 leaves unnumbered. With 12 colour and 11 black & white photographs mounted sized 8 x 9.5 in. all w/ tissue guards. Padded white leather post-binder leather ties at gutter margin a.e.g. gilt lettering & Expo ‘70 logo stamped on front cover slight shelfwear very slight bumping to corners still NF exemplar. This nicely appointed souvenir album chronicles the official trip by Washington State Governor Dan Evans his wife Nancy Bell Evans and the State delegation to the Japan World Exposition “Expo ‘70†featuring the motto “Progress and Harmony for Mankind’ held in Osaka from March 15 to Sept. 13 1970. Washington State was one of only three states to host a pavilion at the Fair along with Hawaii and Alaska and focused on the region’s natural environment and resources. Evans’s visit was part of a trade delegation to Asia and includes photos of him offering his speech on “Washington Day†May 9 1970. The album opens with a night panoramic vista shot of the 820 acre site which hosted 78 countries in total and displayed moving walkways prototype cordless phones a 230-foot sculpture with a gold mask looking toward the future all in celebration of Japan’s rebirth 25 years after the end of World War II. Other photos show Dan & Nancy Evans arriving off their Northwest Orient Airlines jet meeting various dignitaries a formal welcome dinner Evans delivering his speech from the outdoor “Festival Plaza†grandstand traditional celebratory Japanese dance teams and two with Motohiko Kanai governor of Hyogo Prefecture meeting with Gov. Evans in the Washington Pavilion. Of particular interest are the two photos showing Gov. Evans and his party touring the Apollo 12 exhibit with Saturn V rocket engine behind space capsule and a Lunar lander completing the exhibit which at the time included a Moon rock returned to Earth by the Apollo 12 mission. This album captures a moment of exuberance and optimism in Japan as the economy was one of the fastest growing in the World and featured over 68 million visitors. Now 55 years later Osaka is once again holding a World’s Fair which is expected to feature perhaps 28 million visitors. [n.p.], hardcover
19354409Various locations in Hawaii and Japan 1935. Good. 21 leaves illustrated with ninety-four black-and-white and sepia-toned photographs. Small oblong octavo. Contemporary leatherette photograph album string tied. Covers lacking spine chipped. Bottom corner of most leaves chipped with no loss to captions or photos minor occasional dust-soiling. Photographs generally well preserved. A wonderful annotated vernacular photograph album assembled by a young woman named Viola documenting her trip from California to Japan in 1935. A small card on the front flyleaf is inscribed: "Dear Viola Please use this album to paste pictures of your visit to Japan &c. With sincere regard Pete Takahashi." Viola visited Hawaii and Japan with a half dozen family members and friends including her mother each of whom is pictured and identified throughout the album. The pictures show Viola herself referred to both by her name and as "Me" as well as her traveling companions in Honolulu Waikiki and Nuuanu Pali in Hawaii. A few pages contain photographs of the travelers aboard ship before arriving first in Hiroshima about halfway through the album. Most of the photographs from Viola's visit to Japan emanate from Hiroshima where Viola and her mom pose with various Japanese elders she visits the beach and takes portraits of numerous identified locals. The final portion of the album emanates from Lake Nojiri where Viola visited a summer camp and posed for a few additional pictures along with her mother and other Japanese women. A humble but informative travel album memorializing a young Japanese-American woman's trip to the mother country where she visited Hiroshima a decade before the devastating bombs were dropped there at the end of World War II. unknown

Approximately 430 presumably amateur silver gelatin photographs 6.5†x 5†and smaller and a couple of real photo postcards housed in three commercial albums oblong or vertical quartos measuring about 11 inches by 8 inches. The compiler is unknown but quite possibly “Takamasa†first name or his descendants. His photograph is the first image in the album we have identified as album A. The photos are dated as early as 1909 and as late as 1954 with most from the mid twenties to late thirties. Many of the images include manuscript and occasionally rubber-stamped or printed annotations in Japanese on the versos. An eight page English translation accompanies the archive.

An impressive archive documenting life in Japan between the wars. Other images depict the building of the Sankyo Corporation on the day of the Great Kanto Earthquake scenes along the Tama River in Western Tokyo and various views of Temples Shrines Hot Springs etc. The accompanying translation is categorized by album A B & C with photos identified by numbers which correspond to added post-it slips. Scarce work by Swedish physician veterinarian and zoologist Johan Gustaf Hjalmar Kinberg 1820-1908. Kinberg is best know as ship surgeon and zoologist on the Eugenie circumnavigation of 1851-1853 and for his contribution to the classification of Annelida specimens collected on the voyage. This work is his noble attempt no doubt prompted by the voyage to offer a simplified transcription for Japanese and Chinese characters following the work of J. J. Hoffman 1868 and Georg V. D. Torahiko Kori 1890-1924 Left Tokyo University Without Graduating To Join The Editorial Staff Of Shirakaba A Literary Magazine In 1909. Early In His Short Literary Career Kori Torahiko Became An Enfant Terrible Of The Shirakaba School A Group Of Writers And Artists Whose Works Reflected The Liberal Democratic And Humanistic Spirit Of The Taisho Era 1912-1926. At The Age Of Twenty Kori Began Editing And Publishing With Yanagi Muneyoshi Soetsu Founder Of The Mingei Movement And Around 1923 Became A Frequent Contributor To The Major Literary Magazines Of The Day. In 1909 Kori Torahiko Won First Prize In The Contest Held By Taiyo Sun Magazine With His Play Titled "The Matsuyama Family" Which Brought Him Into Prominence As A Promising Dramatist. His Fame Was Established When The Imperial Theatre Staged His Play Dojoji 1912. The Following Year He Left For Europe. At London Kori Met Esther Sainsbury The Poetess And They Remained Friends Till His Death. He Wrote Plays In London; His First Drama To Be Staged There Was "Kanawa" Iron Ring 1917. Another Of His Plays "Toils Of Yoshitomo" Ran For Three Weeks At The Little Theatre London. Other Plays Similarly Staged Were "Saul And David" And "Absalom." "The Toils Of Yoshitomo" Was Translated Into Several European Languages Including German French And Italian. He Was One Of The Few Japanese Writers Who Worked Abroad. Despite His Close Association With The Shirakaba School Kori In His Taste For Romantic And Decadent Literature Was At Odds With The Prevailing Shirakaba Partiality For Realist Literature Particularly That Of Tolstoy. In His Mature Prose Style Kori Also Turned Away From The Shirakaba Writers' Tendency To Sinewy Colloquialism And Airy Realism In Favour Of A More Flowery Convoluted Prose Style À La D'Annunzio Or Walter Pater. An Unattributed Evaluation States " In Japan One Lone Voice Persisted In Hailing The Greatness Of Kori Long After His Early Death. Mishima Yukio Saw In Kori'S Plays The Essence Of Tragedy. Mishima Rated Kori As The Natural Successor To Such Classic Japanese Tragedians As Zeami Chikamatsu And Mori Ogai. Mishima'S Modern Noh Plays Was Written In Implicit Homage To Kori And Stands Today As A Continuation Of Many Of The Themes That Kori Reworked So Successfully In His Dramas. Shiga Naoya Concluded His Reminiscence Of Kori With His Regret That He Had Let Kori Go To England. "Kori Should Have Stayed And Worked In Japan. If He Had He Might Not Have Died So Young.' Kori'S Early Death Was Undeniably Tragic But Given His Long History Of Sickness And The Fact That He Received The Best Medical Treatment Available At The Time His Premature Death Would Have Been Unavoidable Whether He Had Been In Japan Or Europe. Had Kori Never Left Japan He Might Now Be Known As A Renowned Writer Of The Shirakaba School But Because He Left For Europe And Britain We Have The Toils Of Yoshimoto Arguably The Greatest Dramatic Achievement By A Japanese Playwright ".

Selwyn & Blount / Chapel River Press hardcover
