Six-month run of an in-house organ of a company that provided large advertising cards used in electric street cars on the West Coast. It was published every Saturday and did not have a set number of pages per issue. Paging is erratic and at a certain point there are two numbering systems: one typed at the head of the page at one point dropping some 20 pages and the other rubberstamp numbering at the point of error to the end.The masthead to each issue has the following text: “The coaster is issued every Saturday for the exchange of ideas and news between our offices. It must not be circulated outside of our Organization. Contributions desired for publication should each San Francisco Office not later than Thursday of each week. If you benefit by reading the articles of others in the coaster you should reciprocate by letting us have some of your own ideas.The text is a mixture of social news: happenings in the various branches; retirements; encouraging rhetoric and express business instructions on the placement of cards some are returned to the client after the agree and instructions for ordering supplies.The first issue of this volume contains two pages outlining the United States eminence in many fields. With only 6% of the world’s population and 7% of the land the United States produced in 1920: 25% of the agricultural supplies; 40%of the mineral products; 34% of the manufactured goods.Earl Vincent Burke 1885–1963 was a graduate of UC Berkeley and is listed in the 1930 census as “Business Manager Advertisingâ€. He was a member of the Book Club of California; John Henry Nash printed an invitation for Burke’s lecture at the San Francisco Public Library on Master Printers. This is the original edition NOT a print-on-demand book.Philadelphia-born Hiram Sellers Kneedler 1859/60–1941 was a Newspaper editor and publisher who owned various newspapers in Iowa including the The Times in Cherokee and The Boone Republican and who wrote several travel books for the railroads. In 1913 he uprooted his family and drove them all in his 1913 Studebaker to California where he stayed for about 10 years doing various jobs including working on newspapers and becoming Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce for San Bernardino California. He then returned to Eldora Iowa and brought The Ledger. At some point he moved back to California and he died in Los Angeles in 1941.At the time Kneedler wrote this very little was known of this coastal area. It had been sparsely populated and its development stunted by the continuing unrest in Mexico. Presentation copy. The trade edition of this work was bound in green printed wrappers with 10 pages of advertisements in the front and 3 to 10 pages of advertisements in the rear. Map of transcontinental was attached to the rear free endsheet. Our copy predates the various issues with advertisements and the map attached to the rear free endsheet. Eberstadt and Yale copies and others only list the plat and cattle trails maps. Early Montana promotional item from the Northern Pacific Railroad a year before they opened the Gardiner Gateway at the north end of Yellowstone Park. An important descriptive tract of the new country at the time of its settlement with a fine large map showing the towns and cattle trails. Eberstadt 132: 478. Howes Y8. Rampaging Herd 1535. Stock worn toned and chipped with a few instances of soiling extensive splitting along old folds with tape repair to verso. Good only. <br /> <br /> Promotional broadside for the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad that operated from roughly 1850-1970 largely in the Midwest. Features a paper-cut illustration that was created on the occasion of the first trip made by steam-powered passenger cars in New York in 1831 before the company's incorporation. This broadside however was not issued until several decades later. The extensive railway inspired the tune "Rock Island Line" covered by country crooners Johnny Cash and Lead Belly. <br /> <br /> No separately cataloged copies in OCLC as of May 2026. There is minimal creasing along the sides and a multiple small pin holes in each of the corners. There is also a rip on the bottom edge that has been professionally restored. The size is 915mm x 610mm or 36" x 24". This poster is in good condition. The poster says Canadian Pacific Presents: The Canadian- First and only all stainless steel "dome" streamliner across Canada between Montreal-Vancouver Toronto- Vancouver starting April 24_1955. This poster was issued by the Canadian Pacific to promote The Canadian a streamliner that would go across Canada. It is a bright red background with bold white lettering in varying fonts across the whole poster. This is the first poster made advertising the first trip on "The Canadian" the soon to be famous all stainless steel "dome" streamliner across Canada. A very good slightly soiled copy of this rare prospectus/marketing brochure describing the route and variations from Toronto to Montreal and southeast to the Maine coast. Numerous legs are described including Thousand Island and Ottawa River excursions by steamboat. A fascinating piece which includes illustrations of car interiors and landscapes. CPR bought trackage rights on the Maine Central Railroad further south than the IRM link it built to Saint John NB in 1889. According to this prospectus: "The Canadian Pacific Railway will on the 3rd July inaugurate a through line of Sleeping and Parlour cars between Toronto the White mountains Old Orchard Beach and Portland Me."
