Munroe had been retained by the Japanese Government as Assistant Geologist and Mining Engineer with the Geological Survey of Yesso for the Hokkaidō Colonization Agency. His work laid the foundations for the future coal mining industry in Hokkaido. The report contains two lengthy tables relating to coal production and quality. .
