19320001342ASEA ABOARD THE MS SAN FRANCISCO. Good. 1932. On offer is a sensational archive of two 2 manuscript items historical on a number of levels: the first item is the personal travel diary handwritten by William Lines Havrah Hubbard noted expert lecturer and author on the world Opera. Very well filled nearly every inch of space is densely covered with his small legible cursive handwriting. Hubbard was the music critic for the Chicago Tribune and author of a definitive 11 volume work on the history of opera which was published in 1908. Accompanying Hubbard and his family was his companion Julia A. Read whose personal diary of this extended voyage we list separately. The second item is a notebook that Hubbard used as a photo album with many detailed descriptions and entries adding tremendous depth to the album. These two items of Hubbard's personal history were created from February 1932 through January 1934. Historians and collectors of Opera and related artistic disciplines will find a treasure trove as Hubbard proves to be a superb diarist. The travel journal 190pp makes for fascinating reading given the scope of these diaries of almost two full years of travel and visits and experiencing the high artistic life only one so prominent as Hubbard could access with the added luck of Hubbard having Albert Einstein for many weeks as his ship board neighbor. The reader learns that on March 2 1932 Hubbard was aboard the M.S. San Francisco and in Los Angeles he found himself in the cabin next to Albert Einstein and his first wife Elsa who at the height of his career and world fame set off on a vacation to their German homeland. Einstein often traveled by this means as it was very relaxing and it reminded him of his love for sailing. The author notes his encounters with Albert and Elsa Einstein. "Monday Mar 12 was Prof. Einstein's birthday their table was decorated with 3 vases of Easter and Tiger lilies which the Capt had ordered from La Libertad with a birthday card and many cards & letters. Mrs. came in first then the Prof we gave hand clapping in welcome and they were like two happy children. Sunday April 3 Prof E reading Philosophies and enthusiastic over it. Had chat at table with Dr. about music etc. Tuesday April 5 Had stroll with Prof. E & discussions of economic conditions. Believes employment is the solution to the problem. Sunday 10 Watched Election returns until 11:30 Conrads sympathizes with Hitler" and much much more. Further entries on a number of topics and Hubbard's personal observations his noting the opinions of his c0-travelers including the politics of the day conditions in Depression era pre-Nazi early Hitler Germany and researchers and collectors of Einstein will appreciate that this was a critical junction in the great man's life. To quote one online source: "1932 - While at age 53 Einstein is at the height of his fame. However he begins to feel the heat of Nazi Germany because he is identified as a Jew. This is part of the reasoned that Albert wrote the letter to President Roosevelt in 1939. He was concerned that Nazi Germany would have a sole power of destruction." Also: "He went so far as to authorize the establishment of the Einstein War Resisters' International Fund in order to bring massive public pressure to bear on the World Disarmament Conference scheduled to meet in Geneva in February 1932. When these talks foundered Einstein felt that his years of supporting world peace and human understanding had accomplished nothing. Bitterly disappointed he visited Geneva to focus world attention on the "farce" of the disarmament conference. In a rare moment of fury Einstein stated to a journalist." Hubbard's journal provides interesting insight into the personal side of the great Scientist as well as the conditions existing in Germany at that time. One online biography notes: William Lines Hubbard 1867-1951 worked off and on from 1891 to 1907 as music critic and editor of the Chicago Tribune -he was also dramatic editor 1902-7-while teaching singing and living in Europe from 1893 to 1898.50 W. Dermot Darby 1885-1947 Farwell's coeditor was a native of Ireland. Trained in England and New York Darby served as secretary of the Modern Music Society in New York in 1916 and helped to edit The Art of Music 1914-17.As to condition the diary is battered and bruised on the spine and cover but the insides are better and overall Good. 19100008139PETERBOROUGH ONTARIO. Good. 1910. On offer is an excellent ledger book from the early 1900's of century old Canadian firm. Measuring approximately 12 inches by 7.5 inches it contains 100 pages and is 100% complete. The hard cover and pages within are all in very good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. William Lech and Sons was a furrier business that operated in Peterborough ON for 146 years. The business was established in 1861 by William Lech an immigrant from Prussia and son of a Prussian soldier. The Lech family came from Bremen in the Kingdom of Prussia. William Lech's father was a Prussian soldier who fought in the Napoleonic Wars. After France's defeat of Prussia he served in Napoleon's Prussian contingent and was present for the Retreat from Moscow and the Battle of Waterloo and the Siege of Paris. Lech left Bremen in 1854 and emigrated to New York City. After sending for his wife they made their way to Montreal. A furrier by training he worked in Montreal for some six years. He left Montreal and came to Peterborough where he opened his own furrier business - William Lech and Sons. The business was very successful. They operated from the same address for their entire existence and the building was purpose-built for the fur trade including the processing of pelts into manufactured goods for both wholesale and retail trade. They had an attractive retail store in front and processing refrigeration facilities in back and apartments upstairs in their 3-story building. Their business was a local landmark in downtown Peterborough for well over a century. The ledger book covers the period June 2nd 1910 to May 4th 1911. It served as an account book aide memoire and record book. Its entries list many of the residents of Peterborough noting the amounts they paid on their accounts. Many of those names could be recognized from businesses operating today while others are of long-standing families of the community. As an aide memoire he notes phone calls to be made shipments sent and received and duties paid. He record expenses large and small and the record book contains details of local furs being purchased and paid for: "$ 1.25 Miss M. Crossley $45.00 F.H. Gardener $ 2.00 Minnie Coughlan $ 2.00 Mrs. Catherine O'Leary" Dec 3 1910; "63 Fox $358.75 9 fisher $83.25 2 fox $2.75 4 coon racoons $8.25 5 sk skunk $5.00 6 martin $36.00 18 weasel $1.90" Nov 18 1911 Business wasn't just confined to Peterborough. He did business throughout the area as far away as Toronto and Montreal as well as having business connections into the United States and Europe. "New England Supplier "All Saints" - $25.00" Jan 18 1911; "Germany Bal. Duty Ck $25.00 / Cash $0.20 . " Apr 6 1911. He did business with expensive fashion retailers and other prominent organizations: "Holt Ren Renfrew - $20.00 Holt Renfrew Co. $7.89 $0.55 = $8.44" Dec 31 1910; "Sick Children's Hospital - $1.00" Dec 15 1910. This is an excellent snapshop into the day-to-day operations of a very successful Canadian family business at the turn of the 20th century. For a historian it offers a detailed picture of the income and expenses and expense items involved with the firms operations as well as its scope of operations. For a genealogist it is an excellent record of families living in and around the Peterborough area at this time.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF CANADA; ONTARIO; EARLY 20TH CENTURY; 1910s; WILLIAM LECH AND SONS; LECH FURRIERS; PETERBOROUGH ON; PRUSSIA; SICK CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL; HOLT RENFREW; CANADIAN BUSINESSES OF THE 19TH AND THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY; PRUSSIAN IMMIGRANTS IN CANADA; FURRIER BUSINESSES IN ONTARIO; FUR TRADE IN ONTARIO; PETERBOROUGH BUSINESSES IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY; FURRIER BUSINESS OPERATIONS; PETERBOROUGH GENEALOGY; ONTARIO ECONOMY IN THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY; CANADIANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

19310008035Rochester New York. Good. 1931. On offer is an interesting diary detailing the last year in the life of a 1931 Rochester NY police officer. What makes this especially interesting is that mid-way through the year as his health fails his wife takes over keeping the daily journal. The diary is a hardbound book 6 1/2 inches by 4 3/4 inches with about 210 pages. There are 180 pages of diary entries and they are 100% complete. The binding is loose but otherwise the book is in good shape. The handwriting is quite legible. The author of the diary is 'Will' a police officer in Rochester NY. His wife is always referred to as 'H' but there is an entry where she is identified as 'Harriet'. The diary chronicles the last year of Will's life. That he is ill is made clear from almost the first page. Each daily entry has a note about the weather and a reference to how he is feeling. Over the months the reader can see a slow but steady decline. Included in the entries are many references to friends. There are also references to local events in the city. There are frequent tidbits of domestic life. These entries can give a sense of the diary: "Cold and getting warmer. I did not feel as well all day but H cured her Glick and Goldman gave us a call After supper harry and Celia were up left at 10:30 PM Quiet Cold 12 above Had a bad night" Jan 24 "Cloudy 36 above No change in temp. I don't feel any to good. Renaud and Wilson were up brought Bananas and loco nuts had a poor night. Feel weak. Sick spells" Feb 21 ". H Dink and H Sander called 11 to 12:45 am After dinner Dink came back with a new Patent 5 Gal can of Beer. The Harry Goldman came instead of Glic. We had a little party. Had a bad night. My water bothering me. Hay 9:30 PM" Mar 14. There are many margin notes recording doctor visits. On April 2nd he comments about his friend: Glick had another stroke. His entry for May 1 ends with the simple statement I retired at 9:30 PM . There are references to the wider community: "Thousands of men out of work and nothing in sight" Feb 12 " . Lots of sickness about" Feb 13 "Eastman Kodak Explosion . 5 killed" Sept 11. On Feb 17 he celebrated his 34th anniversary on the Police Force: ". Renaud and Wilson called. They brought a boquet of flowers ordered by Harriet for me on my 34 th anniversary of the Police Dept & Deputy Chief H T Copenhagen sent me a beautiful basket of flowers". In June the entries change as Harriet begins to take over writing them. It is clear that his health is failing. Most daily entries have a comment about how he is feeling and they range normally from fair to poor. "Will very sick. Cecilia came at 9 PM Elmer called for her at 9:30. Called for priest in morning" Oct 23. As the days slowly spin into November he is getting weaker by the day. In one margin note she comments that 124 times Doc called in 1931. Finally this entry: My Dear sweetheart died at 10:50 PM Nov 13 He was 9 days shy of his 61st birthday. Harriet was 50. Beginning Nov 14th each day from then on was numbered - counting now the days since he had passed away. Only on Christmas Day does she refer to children: ". Thank God for the kiddies . 6 weeks Billy is dead" Dec 25. The diary ends with this poignant note: "This was an aweful year for me - losing my best pal" Dec 31. This diary is a very good look into the life of an ordinary working man as he deals with his declining health. I also gives a very good look at the web of friendships and how they sustain and support him and his wife. Some are loose. William J Gray was a seaman second class serving on USS Lassen in 1944 and 1945. USS Lassen began life as the commercial merchant ship MS Shooting Star in 1940. After sea trials she was transferred to the U.S. Navy and took on the role of ammunition supply ship. She was renamed USS Lassen following a U.S. navy tradition of naming munitions ships after volcanoes - in this case Mt Lassen CA. Between 1941 and when Gray joined her crew in 1944 she made munitions deliveries on both the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and U.S. navy assets in the Pacific Ocean. After the outbreak of WWII she made a number of replenishment voyages to U.S navy elements stationed in the South Pacific. In 1944 at the time that Gray joined her crew Lassen was part of Vice-Admiral W. L. Calhoun's 7th Force Pacific Fleet. The USS Lassen arrived at Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands on 2 February 1944. She replenished ships both in the Marshall Islands and at Manus Island in the Admiralty Islands. As part of the supply train of the fleet at Kossol Passage Palau Islands from 25 September to 2 October and at Ulithi Atoll from 4 October to 18 November 1944 she earned her first of three battle stars: "On the afternoon of the 20 th we sighted 3 tankers and 2 DE's Destroyer Escorts just over the horizon. At about 1400 we had GQ General Quarters and could see the anti-aircraft barrage the other convoy was firing. It drove the 3 planes 3 Zero's off and one of them came in our direction. Our DE and the tanker fired but it was out of range and soon disappeared. . Secured from GQ at about 1600. At 1700 . GQ sounded again. . went to my station starboard 1.1 pom pom guns The DE was in the lead Lassen next and the tanker last. . the tanker fired on it. . it appeared off our starboard side. . we and the tanker opened fire on it. It went aft of our fantail turned and went back over the tanker some said it dropped several bombs then . I had a good view from the bridge." Nov 13 1944 ; ". the largest unit of the fleet we had serviced appeared about daylight - several major carriers 3 battleships of the South Dakota class escort carriers cruisers and cans destroyers. We took the Washington alongside and she took 900 5" projectiles and powder. " July 28 1945. Gray also listed the ships in some of the Task Forces of which he was part. He also included the text of a message received from Task Force Commander Admiral Bill Halsey "after three record-breaking days of reaming". His last entries are from August 1945: ". We continued loading and at 8 AM August 15th learned that the Japs had accepted our counter proposals. Finished loading thinking we were leaving the 20th . Waiting for orders." Aug 20 1945. The USS Lassen departed for the United States on Oct 25th and arrived at Port Discovery Nov 20th 1945. This is an excellent description of life at sea in the midst of some of the greatest naval actions. Gray's notes are replete with details of ships serviced and rearmed types of ammunition transferred etc. For a naval historian this is a valuable piece of source documentation. It can serve to paint a picture of a little-celebrated but vital part of naval operations - replenishment at sea and provide a different perspective on the war in the Pacific. Gray writes well and his words bring to life the events so often related in the pages of history books or on movie screens.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 20TH CENTURY; 1940S; WW2; SECOND WORLD WAR; AMERICAN NAVY; AMERICANS IN WW2; WILLIAM J.
