On offer is a superb original 1803 - 1805 manuscript cypher and navigation book handwritten by a young midshipman James Maurice Shipton aboard the noted HMS Thunderer a ship forever in the history books as the ship that spotted the emerging Spanish fleet and thusly began the Battle of Trafalgar and the demise of Britain's enemies and sadly the hero of the day Lord Horatio Nelson. Notably Thunderer also took part in the Glorious 1st of June Battle against the French in 1794. James Maurice Shipton who would one day captain his own ship and reap accolades created this book while theThunderer worked blockade duty along the French coast. Mere months later the ship would engage in the Battle of Trafalgar and the decisive engagement by the British would end the rule of the French despot and dictator Napoleon Bonaparte. Included are a number of letters from archivists and historians providing background info on Shipton. 18050009106CINCINNATI OHIO OH to TRENTON NEW JERSEY NJ 1805. On offer is a unique and gorgeously written letter from an lawyer by the name of Isaac G. Barnetwho has recently relocated to Cincinnati Ohio from England. He is writing to a friend Garret D. Wall in Trenton New Jersey. Garret Wall was at the time just a practicing attorney in New Jersey however he would go on to serve a long illustrious life first as a clerk for the New Jersey Supreme Court then as the U.S. Attorney for New Jersey then being elected a New Jersey Senator from 1835 to 1841 and finishing his life as a high court judge. In language that is often elegant and very obviously from an educated man the Mr. Barnets writes of many topics such as his recent departure from Trenton New Jersey to Cincinnati his new professional life in Cincinnati his old practice in Westminster in London England and the ease at which he finds that people can pass the Bar exam in his new home and the consequences this seems to have had. He begins the letter as such: The most difficult part of a letter is said to be the beginning but I have found it the easiest in this instance having already begun without knowing how to continue the fact is I feel in but an indifferent mood this evening and you shall pay for it by being obliged to read what will neither be amusing enough to ____ a smile nor entertaining enough to please. This letter will give you no other pleasure than that which a sensible mind will always feel on hearing from an absent friend. He continues apologizing for events that seem to have just transpired recently his relocating to Cincinnati from Trenton New Jersey: I hope you are convinced before this that my abrupt departure from Trenton was not intentional that neither you nor Mr. Pemberton were selected as objects of neglect but that the _____ of my mind on the occasion will be a sufficient apology for any apparent neglect on my fact. He also speaks of the timeless trope that continues to this day the observation that: The sentiments of the people in general as in all other Democratic societies appear very much opposed to the lawyers. He writes that this is even more so in his new home where seemingly anyone can pass the Bar exam and become a lawyer: The facility of admission to the bar has introduced a norm of worthless and ignorant creatures into the profession who would sell an opinion for a grile of whiskey and require themselves for a pint. Things in Cincinnati are different than in Westminster Mr. Barnet opines. Yet he writes I have obtained more knowledge of the law since my short residence here than during all the rest of my studies - I have no other way to employ my time than in reading. He finishes the letter with the usual pleasantries asking Mr. Wall to remember me to the girls and to all my juvenile friends - I will conclude by giving you my sincere regards - Isaac G. Barnet. The letter is four pages long consisting of two unbound sheets of paper. The pages are in fair to good condition showing a good deal of discoloration and repaired rips and tears. The letters must be handled with care. The handwriting is done in black ink which is still in good shape showing little fading or smudging. The entirety of the letter can be read easily and legibly. Background: Garret Dorset Wall March 10 1783 November 22 1850 was a military officer and politician from New Jersey. Born in Middletown Township he completed preparatory studies studied law was licensed as an attorney in 1804 and as a counselor in 1807 and commenced practice in Burlington New Jersey. He served in the War of 1812 and commanded a volunteer regiment from Trenton. He was clerk of the New Jersey Supreme Court from 1812 to 1817 and was Quartermaster General of New Jersey from 1815 to 1837. He was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly in 1827 and was U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey in 1829; Wall was elected Governor of New Jersey in 1829 but declined to serve; he was then elected as a Jacksonian later a Democrat to the U.S. Senate and served from March 4 1835 to March 4 1841; he was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection. While in the Senate he was chairman of the Committee on the Militia Twenty-fourth and Twenty-fifth Congresses and a member of the Committees on the Judiciary Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses and Military Affairs Twenty-fifth Congress. 18050002416LIMBOURG BELGIUM. Good. 1805. On offer is a super original begun in 1805 manuscript cookbook with many 100s of European culinary recipes receipts handwritten in French whose origins begin in a castle in Limbourg Belgium. Inscribed 'Livre de Cuisine a Marie Barbe Therese Henrotay Commence le 3 Juillet 1805.' There is one major hand throughout Marie likely with other hands later with other dates of a few entries on the last pages through to the 1840s and remarkably a few from 1915! The recipes are all encompassing: meats desserts baking storage preparation etc. Absolutely stunning in its breadth. We note one pair of very unique to this particular book pages: 263 and 264 enigmatically titled 'Preservatif Contre Cholera morbus - Extrait de la Gaseppe de la D'aip-La Chapelle Du 1st Septembre 1831' which we believe refers to a gastrointestinal illness of cramps diarrhea and sometimes vomiting but not used technically. The well centered inscription bordered with the outline of a wide bottomed flask is otherwise blank of writing. This same page has a hand stamp inscription 'Jos. Dejardin 47 Place St. Georges Limbourg Belgium. We suggest this leads directly back to an ancient food establishment still in use today and we believe called Brasserie St-Georges. The book proper has seen better days. The binding is cracked and loose and someone has what appear to be skewered the book piercing the cover and through several pages but hardly a word of loss but annoying. Otherwise the interiors are legible and as stated several hundreds of ancient recipes. 18060001993CAMBRIDGE MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA 1806. On offer is a superb historically significant 1806 manuscript essay: "A Disquisition upon the Philosophy of the Ancients pronounced before the society of Phi Beta Kappa at their anniversary meeting at Cambridge 28th August 1806" presented as a speech this being the final draft with corrections handwritten by Thomas Boylston Adams 1772 - 1832 the third and youngest son of President John Adams and brother to future president John Quincy Adams. The 15 page essay was read before the society on August 28th 1806 and later published in the Boston Atheneum was read on the 30th anniversary of the Phi Beta Kappa F Society which drew the attention of many distinguished guests and many prestigious orators who delivered speeches in honor of the society. The author describes his philosophical bent and directly into the heart of his politics as he once detailed to Abigal Adams: "I must study politics and war that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy." His sentiment is fully expressed in this erudite lecture on philosophy by Adams. Here is a snippet: "Of those institutions in our own Country professing similar objects it is remarkable that the most conspicuous were founded amid the din of army and in the very heat of our struggle for Independence; affording an honorable illustration of the truth of a maxim that the love of liberty and that of solid and useful knowledge walk always hand in hand." The final page has a list a dozen references from Hume to Priestly and Sir William Jones men whose works underpinned American thought and ideals. The 8 x 6 inch pages are in excellent shape with light wear the paper wrapper in lesser condition with chips and rubs. Overall VG. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Manuscript. unknown

18070001802ALLONBY ENGLAND. Fair. 1807. On offer is a superb early 19th Century mathematics and complex arithmetic ciphering book. There are over 320 pages of text and titles in a lovely calligraphic hand including a folding table all in pen and ink. Identified as having belonged to the Costin Family of Allonby England this is believed to be a school book from the highly noted Quaker School at Wigton dated by paper watermarked 1807. This book was a massive effort by the unidentified Costin Family member but unique for the breadth and depth of the mathematical equations and complexity of the problems. The book stands as a testament to the quality of education at the Wigton School. The school book is in a very well handled state detached from the worn binding the contents are now loose the sections although individually sewn are coming away from each other. Some of the 8 x 10 inch initial pages maybe missing there is old damp/water staining to some but not all of the pages but overall Fair. BACKGROUND NOTES: Wikipedia: Wigton School also called Brookfield School or Friends' School was a private boarding school on the outskirts of Wigton Cumbria. The school was opened on 4 September 1815 by the Society of Friends Quakers for Cumberland and Northumberland. The initial student intake was 9 boys and 8 girls in premises at Highmoor in existing buildings. These first buildings were leased at an annual rent of 27 guineas. In 1826 the main school site opened at Brookfield commissioned by the Society of Friends. A London architect designed the buildings in classic Georgian style. The school motto was "We seek the truth." The school badge comprised a shield with a green background and diagonal river to represent the school's rural location with a beck small brook running through the grounds. One one side of the diagonal was a lamp to represent knowledge. On the other side was a set of scales to represent fairness and tolerance key Quaker virtues. The school expanded over the years. Student numbers peaked in the mid-1970s at around 210. Following the peak student numbers declined and in 1984 the school closed. 180800MV80Italy: None 1808. Two rare documents purple-stained partly-printed ink signed dated 1808 each headed IL PREFETTO E ASSISTENTI DELLA VENERABILE CONGREGAZIONE E COMPAGNIA DEL SANTISSIMO SACRAMENTO ERETTA NELLA PARROCCHIA DI SANT'EULALIA DEL QUARTIERE DELLA MARINA.The ink has really lightened on one of these except for the signature. The original file folder contained a very old collection of foreign autographs and documents which indicates: "Spanish War - rare watermarks - unusually good." Documents relating to the 1808 - 1814 Spanish War or the Peninsula War as is called Spain's War of Independance are very very scarce. Four bold signatures and the fact that it is dated squarely at the beginning of the conflict make for a very interesting pair of documents that require further research. . Autograph. Manuscript. 1809000867cSCOTLAND IRELAND ENGLAND DUBLIN EDINBURGH UK. Good. 1809. On offer is a remarkable original 1809 - 1833 handwritten manuscript book once used by the British Army's 94th Regiment of Foot. This book contains all manner of writings relevant to the running and goings-on of the Regiment by the Officers. The book is rather eclectic containing standing orders regimental orders different charts and forms for payroll and other reportage for example on the conditions of the Dublin Garrison orders of the day direct communications between officers public requests for leave advancement of funds settling of accounts etc. public apologies for poor behavior copies of letters sent to superiors up to and including the Duke of York Commander of all His Majesty's Forces and many other of Britain's peerage and there are even personal reminiscences notes of reference for departing soldiers plus much much more. Most of the entries of personal notes and those for Day Book purposes are signed by all manner of officers and peerage; Colonels Captains Lords and many reference specific orders by the Supreme Commander of the Army or even the King. Most fascinating are the 'Memorialist' messages of certain officers writing in the 3rd person touting themselves while seeking favor. 164 pp of history and methodology of this noted British Army regiment contained in this entirely handwritten book. Most of the entries are circa 1809 - 1827 but the oldest entry in the book is dated Edinburgh Castle 1833 and is addressed to what appears to be 'My Dear Beaver' while the correspondent signs in initials F.M. late of St. Lucia. He makes reference to Mr. Beaver as the clergyman that baptized his 3 children. On offer is a fascinating though enigmatic and curious 1810 manuscript ship's log of Captain Thomas Clarke's return voyage from Russia and Norway to Bristol Rhode Island on the ship "Narragansett". Dated September through December 1810 in many ways this is a typical 'Age of Sail' ship's log book classically filled with daily data required of all formal logs: weather winds sail settings navigational details and entries related to observations and events on and about the ship in this interesting and unusual east to wet trans-Atlantic voyage in an early 19th Century merchant vessel however it appears the book was started mid trip and begins at sea. Curiously someone after the voyage excised very neatly every other page of the journal leaving 26 otherwise well filled pages out of 44 pages in the remaining portion of the book. 18150002581Good. 1815. On offer is a fascinating historically significant journal handwriten by Joel Cadbury on his journey to post War of 1812 America. The journal sees Cadbury travel from England to the United States travel south to Washington D.C. discussing many of the prescient questions of the early 1800s in America including seeing the U.S. Senate debate the 'Missouri Question'. He travels to Virginia where he sees and is disgusted with the state of slavery and African-Americans on plantations. He visits Mount Vernon and George Washington's tomb and meets by chance the Vice President of the United States Daniel D. Tompkins. While the cover of the journal says "Joel Cadbury's Account of his Voyages to and From American and from its shore from 1815 to 1820" the years of 1815 appear to have been cut out of the book. 4 pages are missing from the very beginning and the journal's first entry is in 1816. The journal begins with Cadbury's journey on the "Ship Mexico" that sailed from England to the United States. "2nd day 8 Mo. 1816. Being the second time we come on board there was a fair freeze but very little of it we got down as far as the Rock this day but the wind dying entirely away we were obliged to drop anchor to keep us from being run on the sands." Cadbury keeps details on what happened on the ship and the many other ships and people interacted with on the journey across the Atlantic. These ships include one heading from Liverpool to Savannah called "the Recovery from New Orleans Captain Barnard bound to Bordeaux she had on board the crew of a Spanish ship bound to Holland which they had taken off a wreck in distress." The ship lands in Sandy Hook New Jersey 'certainly well named for there is nothing but sand on which there are a few evergreens grown." Cadbury heads on horseback to Philadelphia where he meets with family. ' reached my uncle about 2 oclock found my cousins at dinner was exceeding kindly received by them.' The first long entry in the book ends with Cadbury speaking reflexively on his life and journey so far. The next entry 18 pages in length is entitled by Cadbury "A short account of an agreeable excursion taken to Muncy for 3 weeks from 15th of 7th Mo. to of the 8th Mo. 1817 to our Dear Fr'd Mercy Ellis's.' The longest section of the journal is next entitled 'An account of an excursion to the South from 1. Mo. 10 1820 to 2 Mo.' First he goes to Washington D.C. and requests his driver to take him "immediately to where congress was sitting in the finished wings of the Capitol." He then remarks that "the center building tis supposed will be finished and will be one of the most splendid buildings in America." He is referring to the Capitol building which was burned down in the War of 1812 and for which was being reconstructed had started in 1815 and which was continuing when Cadbury sees it in 1820. He writes "you will find us in the Gallery of the Senate been very desirous to hear everything we can on the Missouri Questions not only of great importance but also on account of the results which may issue from any decision on the subject." The Missouri Question he speaks of is the furious debate going on the congress as to whether the state of Missouri should be admitted to the United States as a slave owning state or one in which slavery was abolished. The "Missouri Compromise" ratified in early May 1820 provided for the admission of the District of Maine as a 'free state' and Missouri as a 'slave state' so as not to disturb the power balance between free and slave states. He writes "The Missouri demand on admission into the Union is justified in doing it by the laws of the US the question this is shall she be admitted while her state laws admit for slavery." Though England still had slavery by the time Cadbury was writing he is obviously a virulent abolitionist writing "The inhuman traffic in negroes one party contended tis not constitutions to cripple her in any point while the other say admit her not to join a free congress with slavery in her bosom. She herself demands a curse a yoke which will one day grind her to the dust how blind then are men to their own real interested Strange infatuation murdering their own feelings and intending to murder those of generations unborn for ages to com." Cadbury predicts the a U.S. Civil War writing "Some day if she is not admitted it may cause a division of the States woe to this happy land when this does not take place." He spends much of the time in his journey to the South commenting on the sugar rice and cotton plantations that he sees and the misery that he witnesses in the slaves who work the plantations. "Permit me to copy the following advertisement which was the first thing that struck my eye in turning over a paper in the tavern we are now in: Negroes for Sale The Subscriber offers for sale a bargain 1 Colored Women 28 years 1 colored girl 8 years 1 Colored boy child 7." After this page 3 pages from this section have been cut out. Cadbury "accompanied by James on horse or rather on ponyback and J on horseback" travels to Mount Vernon "Once the residence and now the resting place of the Bones of the General Washington" near Alexandria Virginia. He describes the home and gardens in great detail and visits Washington's tomb. From there Cadbury travels back to Washington D.C. visits the Patent Office "which is really a great curiosity." He visits the House of Representatives and "there with wonder I surveyed the objects which surrounded me with an astonishment called forth by the grandeur which appeared in the inside decorations." The section ends with Cadbury meeting the Vice President of the United States "at the first place I stopped." At the time in 1820 the V.P. was Daniel D. Tompkins who was serving under James Monroe. In the next section Cadbury heads back to England on the Ship Bourier. The section is 20 pages long and accounts the trip back to Cadbury's home in Liverpool. Cadbury spends much of the section reminiscing about the United States and England and its people as well as speaking often about the weather and the speed of the ship. He returns home to a Liverpool that 'looks dark dirty and gloomy every thing appeared very different to what I had anticipated - the houses looked high the Bricks very dark coloured.' The final section a short 11 pages is the 'Journal of my second voyage to the United States in the Ship Lancaster Burkhart for Philadelphia - Sailed the 4th day of Second Month 1821. On this journey he is 'accompanied by my kind & affectionate brother Bevy. This section is written in much less detail than the others. It recounts Cadbury and his brother's trip back to Philadelphia to see their uncle and cousins. 3 pages have been cut off the middle. the section ends abruptly with the brothers still on the ship to America. Many blank pages follow the section suggesting that Cadbury had the intention of finishing the section but never actually did. ; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOEL CADBURY BEVERLY CADBURY ENGLAND WASHINGTON D.C. 18150008043GREAT BRITAIN. Very Good. 1815. On offer is simply superb manuscript of a Royal Navy officer's exploits in the age of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". From the Napoleonic Wars through the rest of the 19th century Britain ruled the world and her instrument was the Royal Navy. This outstanding manuscript details the service of one officer who sailed to 'the far side of the world' when the Royal Navy ruled the world's seas. The manuscript is 176 pages in length and is 100% complete. All pages are typed so legibility is total. Pages are 8 1/24 by 14 inches. The pages are in excellent condition. They are enclosed in a hard cardboard folder. There are several other papers with the manuscript including one of note that will be elaborated on below. John Fullerton joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in May 1815 at 12 years of age. He began his service on HMS Larne a 20 gun corvette. Four days in he saw his first punishment: ". four dozen lashes the first punishment I had ever seen and I never yet met the person who could look upon the infliction without a shudder" p1. From that rather grim introduction he went on to serve in a series of HM ships and travelled the world. He describes his rite of passage when he first crossed the equator on Oct 11th 1819: ". All those who have not been across the Line now go below and the hatchways are guarded . and one at a time blindfolded brought up taken to the chair through a line of people who . "p. 6. He had plenty of adventures. Once after becoming acquainted with a woman in Rio de Janeiro he met a man as he left her home. After exchanging greetings: ". he politely put a knife into my left side and left it there. I gave him an equal portion of my sword and retreated to the ship hospital ." p11. With his friend Hack Hawthorn a Wild Middy p11 he often got into scrapes including one where he and some friends faced off with a Portuguese military street patrol: ". Our swords out and in less than three minutes had possion of their muskets and bayonets but obliged to decamp on board. . Jack generally got those who went on shore with him into similar scrapes." p.12. In 1821 he was commissioned a Lieutenant. His manuscript is rich in observations of places he travelled to and people he met. He mentions a collision with HMS Revolutionaire which was under command of the son of the great Royal Navy Captain Edward Pellew. p24 His descriptions are rich in detail: "I accompanied some Chilinoes to a fair in the country and races many tents with refreshments and dancing people from all parts of the country flocked and a very animated scene it was fair damsels under charge of their sweethearts or lovers and sprightly dame with her shadow not husband he playing the tender to some other man's wife" p77. He also keeps a constant mention of other ships they meet or travel with which provides a first-rate way of cross-referencing other ship's records. On Sept 9th 1827 Fullerton along with some other officers attended the theatre in Valparaiso Chile. He goes into a dispute with a Chilean sergeant which continued to escalate until he shot and killed the sergeant. After a bloody fight in the lounge area of the theatre he escaped wounded to his ship. In reprisal English officers ashore were rounded up and imprisoned. A week later he surrendered to authorities and a jailed until a Spanish court-martial could be convened. At length he was acquitted. What makes this account so historically interesting is that included with the manuscript is the typed statement of the British Consul John White who acted in his defense. The 13 page document is typed on 8 1/2 inch by 14 inch paper and is in excellent condition. It begins: "John White Esq Consul of His Britannic Majesty counsel for Lieutenant John Fullarton Royal Navy accused of having killed Sergeant Jose Maria Minos present the following to the court in justification of the act committed by the said officer ." p1. The defense makes for fascinating reading. It is accompanied by a 46 page packet containing 8 pages of handwritten notes which were part of the original draft. For a naval historian this is an outstanding description of service in the Royal Navy written by an officer with a keen eye for descriptive detail. Written at a time when the Royal Navy truly ruled the oceans of the world it is a treasure trove for information. Whether ship locations customs in foreign lands or life on board it is an outstanding primary source document. The court-martial defense is an excellent example of litigation argument in the early 19th century. It touches on key aspects of self-defense argument that forms the basis for the common law that governs millions of people today. A legal scholar or historian would follow John White's arguments with interest and pleasure.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF EARLY 19TH CENTURY REGENCY MID VICTORIAN ERA LTN JOHN FULLERTON JOHN WHITE BRITISH COUNSEL IN VALPARAISO ROYAL NAVY GREAT BRITAIN ROYAL NAVY IN THE NAPOLEONIC WARS COURT-MARTIAL AGE OF SAIL AGE OF NELSON MARINE MARITIME LIFE IN A ROYAL NAVY SHIP NAVAL OFFICERS NAVIES NAVAL DISCIPLINE WARSHIPS CORVETTES NAVAL HISTORY VISITS TO FOREIGN PORTS EARLY 19TH CENTURY LITIGATION CHILE IN 1820S SAILORS - SOCIAL LIFE AND CUSTOMS HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown
18160009102BALTIMORE MARYLAND and DORCHESTER MASSACHUSETTS 1816. On offer is an fascinating original letter sent from Thomas Taylor a well known privateer in Baltimore during the Spanish American wars of independence in Spanish America. The letter was sent to a Mr. Steven Badlam Esq. of Dorchester Massachusetts dated July 12 1816 and signed your humble servant. It is a short account of three ships that had sunk north of Cape Ann in Massachusetts containing treasure thought to be his but instead taken by seemingly one of his men in his own ship. The letter states in broken and misspelled English that the after sunk the vessels the Prize Master Man has gone and run away with the prize from me. They were taking by one of my crusers.a schooner of six guns. Taylor is requesting any information about the man so that he can recapture the prize. This letter is a fascinating relic of a time and a profession long forgotten but one that had a profound impact on the life of those who worked and lived at sea. The stories of such men as Taylor are a vital part of Atlantic history since they demonstrate the complexity of the Atlantic experience and the inability of political borders to constrain the movement of people goods and ideas. This letter is a small but curious document in this fascinating history. The letter is four pages long with writing on 3 of the pages. The content of the letter is only on one page. The condition of the letter is good. There are a number of tears and rips along the creases and edges of the letter. They do not affect the content. There is also a good deal of discoloration throughout the pages. The handwriting is in black ink that has faded considerably but reading the handwriting is still a fairly easy task. The author of the letter is not a very adept speller so that presents some problems but other than that reading the letter is fairly easy. Sample text: Please to Direct your Letter to Philidelphia Care of Capt Sharpe Lumber Street.; Sir I take the opportunity of dropping these few lines By a Boston paper. I find there has a Spanish prize come off Cape Ann and landed north of her Largo in three fishing Smacks and after Sunk the Vessels the Prize Master man is Joseph of Sallam Salem if you can a-ford me any information. Background Note: According to David Head in his article Spanish American Privateering from the United States and the Development of Atlantic Relations Taylor was born in Wilmington Delaware and migrated to South America in his seafaring youth. When Spain's colonies began declaring independence he had become a naturalized citizen of the United Provinces and an officer in its navy. Taylor's assignment: recruit privateers in North America. Carrying a half dozen commissions Taylor landed at Annapolis in January 1816 made his way to Baltimore and began looking for a ship and like minded men to fight the Spanish American revolutions from the United States. 18190001055DEWSBURY WEST YORKSHIRE ENGLAND UK WAKEFIELD LEEDS. Good. 1819. On offer is an original 1819 'DEWSBURY POOR RATE BOOK' a book of 'poor rates' collected yearly from property owners to fund assistance to the needy of a parish and besides being for the most part full included is a handwritten letter dated 1941 explaining that the book had come from the John Tweedale Settlement Trust land at Dewsbury West Yorkshire England. Research provides that in 1864 John Tweedale takes the position of Lord Mayor of Dewsbury. In 1869 Joseph Tweedale Rawsthorne does the same. This book is superbly placed in early 19th centruy Dewsbury history as evidenced by this online entry: 'In the early 1800s Dewsbury was one of the centres of Luddite opposition to industrialization in which workers retaliated against the onset of mechanization and smashed the new machinery which threatened their way of life. In the 1830s Dewsbury was also one of the centres of Chartist agitation. The C vote to the working classes. In August 1838 after a speech by Chartist leader Fergus O'Connell a mob of between five and seven thousand people besieged the Dewsbury Poor Law Guardians in the town's Royal Hotel. The mob had to be dispersed by troops. Trouble again flared in 1840 when radical agitators seized control of the town again troops were called in and stationed in the town to maintain order. This radical tradition left a legacy in the political life of the town in fact the town's first elected MP in 1867 was John Simon a Jewish lawyer from Jamaica and a Liberal.'
