17860002009
On offer is the original 1786 manuscript cyphering book of Johanna Bergen great-great-granddaughter of foundational New Amsterdam settlers whose family landholdings helped lay the groundwork for Williamsburg Wallabout Bay parts of Brooklyn. The manuscript is also a rare surviving record of early post-Revolutionary education preserving the practical arithmetic and penmanship training of a ten-year-old girl in the new republic.

Johanna "Annetje" Bergen 1776–1833 was the great-great-granddaughter of Hans Hansen Bergen 1610–1653 and Sarah Rapelje 1625–1685. The Bergens were among historic New York's foundational colonial families closely tied to the early settlement landholding and civic development of Brooklyn and New York. Hans Hansen Bergen a Norwegian-born shipwright and early Manhattan tobacco cultivator became a significant Wallabout Bay landholder establishing a Bergen family line deeply connected to Brooklyn Williamsburg the Brooklyn Navy Yard area Long Island and New Jersey. His wife Sarah Rapelje is widely recognized as the first female child of European descent born in New Netherland the Dutch colony later ceded to the English in 1664 and renamed the Province of New York.

Johanna Bergen's biography full lineage and connection to Hans Hansen Bergen and Sarah Rapelje can be found in the biographical notes at the end of this listing.

Johanna Bergen grew up in Kings County New York during a period of profound social disruption. Born on October 2 1776 just over a month after the devastating Battle of Long Island her early childhood unfolded during the British military occupation of New York and the post-Revolutionary rebuilding that followed. As the daughter of a prominent Dutch-American family her 1780s education would have reflected her family's heritage faith social position and the expectations placed upon young women in early American households.

Begun on October 11 1786 just days after Johanna Bergen's tenth birthday this cyphering book documents the formal arithmetic education of a young woman from one of Kings County's leading Dutch-American families. Its carefully ruled pages move through numeration money division compound multiplication land cloth liquid dry Winchester apothecaries' avoirdupois and troy measures showing that Bergen received structured instruction in the practical mathematics of trade household management land goods and account keeping.

The book does not name her school or teacher but its format is consistent with the local post-Revolutionary Kings County school world most likely instruction by a private schoolmaster tutor or local academy-style teacher serving Dutch-American families in Brooklyn Flatbush Gowanus or the surrounding communities.

A small later notation at the back names Johanna Bergen's niece Sarah Conover spelled "Connover" in the manuscript adding an important layer of family provenance. Sarah Conover was the daughter of Rachel Bergen Conover Johanna's sister and a fellow daughter of Tunis Bergen and Annetie Stoothoff. The inscription therefore firmly places the cyphering book within the extended Bergen family and the broader Bergen-Rapalje lineage of early New Netherland.

Condition: The book measures approximately 13.5 x 12 inches and contains 41 complete pages with writing on the recto and verso of most leaves. The protective boards are rubbed the text block is loose from the boards and the pages show brittleness light chipping and some splitting. The manuscript text remains clean bright legible and substantially intact written throughout in a lovely period hand. Overall better than fair.

Biographical Notes:

Johanna Bergen was born in New Utrecht Kings County New York on October 2 1776 in the opening months of the American Revolution. She stood at a symbolic crossroads in New York history: a great-great-granddaughter of New Amsterdam pioneer Hans Hansen Bergen she represented one of the old Dutch colonial families entering the new American era.

On March 15 1798 she married Stephen Samuel Stryker 1776–1851 and together they had at least six children: Maria 1798–1875 Tunis 1800–1852 Samuel 1803–1876 Johanna 1807–1837 Anna 1809–1869 and Sarah 1814–1865. They lived on Stryker's farm located between Gravesend and New Utrecht. Johanna Bergen died on June 22 1833 in Gravesend Kings County Long Island New York.

Line of Descent: Johanna Bergen

I. Hans Hansen Bergen 1610–1653 m. His 1639 marriage to Sarah Rapalje widely celebrated as the first female child of European descent born in New Netherland tied the Bergen family directly to the colony's earliest European-born generation. Bergen later moved from maritime carpentry into early Manhattan tobacco cultivation and in 1647 secured a substantial patent at Wallabout Bay land historically associated with the later development of Williamsburg and the Brooklyn Navy Yard area.

For institutional researchers and private collectors surviving manuscripts and ephemera from the Bergen lineage are desirable because they offer a direct material link to the formation of Kings County and early New York. These documents do more than trace the descent of a prominent family whose name remains visible in Brooklyn's geography; they help illuminate early colonial landholding Dutch-American family networks women's education and the economic development of New York from the New Netherland period into the early republic.

17880009117THE POULTRY LONDON ENGLAND UK: CHARLES DILLY. Good. 1788. On offer is an original hardcover handprinted book from 1788 regarding the Natural Science of Mineralogy the scientific study of chemistry crystal structure and physical properties of minerals and mineralized artifacts. The book comes at the end of the Scientific Revolution in the Western World roughly from 1600-1800 and is a translation of a book written by Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt the famous Swedish mineralogist and chemist who discovered nickel in 1751 and is regarded as one of the founders of modern mineralogy. The title page reads like many in the 17th and 18th century long and with much information: An ESSAY Towards A SYSTEM OF MINERALOGY By AXEL FREDERIC CRONSTEDT Mine-Master Or Superintendent Of Mines In Sweden. Translated From The Original Swedish With Annotations And An Additional Treatise On The Blow-Pipe. By GUSTAV VON ENGESTROM Counsellor Of The College Of Mines In Sweden. THE SECOND EDITION Greatly Enlarged And Improved By The Addition Of THe Modern Discoveries; And By A New Arrangement of the Articles By JOHN HYACINTHE de MAGELLAN.IN TWO VOLUMES. Printed For Charles Dilly In The Poultry M DCC LXXXVIII. In short this the title explains that the book is of the second edition of a translation by Gustav von Engestrom of a work by the Superintendent of Swedish Mines and Baron Axel Frederic Cronstadt with a new arrangement of the articles by Portuguese Natural Philosopher John Hyacinthe de Magellan. There are 5 lines of Latin text under Magellan's name in the title explaining that he was a fellow of the London Royal Society as well as a member of the academies of science in Brussels Madrid Philadelphia Manchester and Paris. The next page contains a dedication To Count LOUIS de BARBIANO de BELGIOIOSO Knight of the Order of Malta Actual Chamberlain and Privy Counsellor of State to His Imperial and Royal Majesty Lieutenant General of His Armies and Proprietor of a Regiment of Infantry in the Imperial Troops &c. &c. &c.By his Much Obliged and Very Humble Servant J. H. De MAGELLAN. A lengthy preface includes a 30 page essay by the Cronstadt a table of contents a TABLE showing the original Order of the Sections in the First Edition and the Place each of them now occupies in the present Publication and a section entitled Corrections and Additions with directions to expunge change or add words or phrases in the ensuing volume sections like this were extremely common in the time before the Industrial Revolution when type was still set by human hand the books were printed on a mechanical printing press. The book divides the sections into overarching 4 Classes Earths Salts Inflammables Metals with subordinated Orders and sections within each order. Besides for the text there are two engraved pages in between the two volumes. The first plate is of drawings of tools used in a Dry Laboratory setting while the second plate is of tools in the Humid Laboratory. All of the tools related to mineralogical analysis and experimentation. Interestingly the back of the book contains a number of pages of handwritten notes by an unknown author. The content is just notes on the books topics of minerals. They almost look like study notes from a student as they reiterate the main topics of the book. The last page shows some original content: The daily paper of Feby 20 1790 mentions the Death of Mr. Magellan the Editor of these volumes. Another paper of this day says he died at Islington. He was a Portuguese Man. This is then followed by the hebrew word for Sefardi a branch of Judaism originating in Spain and Portugal. Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan was in fact Sefardi Jewish. The book is approximately 1080 pages long. The cover is a full leather binding and red endbands. The front and back cover have a good bit of wear but the spine is in very good shape showing a small embossing over red leather that reads System of Mineralogy Von Engestrom. The pages have held up very well showing little discoloration except for the first few and last few pages. The two pages of engravings themselves also show some discoloration on the outside but not on the actual drawing plate. The printed ink is still doing very good as well. The handwriting in the back is easily legible. The ink is faded that make it slightly difficult to read at points. Overall: VG. Background: Baron Axel Fredrik Cronstedt 23 December 1722 19 August 1765 was a Swedish mineralogist and chemist who discovered Nickel in 1751 as a mining expert with the Bureau of Mines. Cronstedt described it as kupfernickel. This name arises because the ore has a similar appearance to copper kupfer and a mischievous sprite nickel was supposed by miners to be the cause of their failure to extract copper from it. Cronstedt named it nickel in 1754. He was a pupil of Georg Brandt the discoverer of cobalt. Cronstedt is one of the founders of modern mineralogy and is described as the founder by John Griffin in his 1827 A Practical Treatise on the Use of the Blowpipe. He remains to this day to be an outstanding idol for young swedes; Jean Hyacinthe de Magellan 17231790 was a Portuguese natural philosopher. He was also a lineal descendant of the great Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan who discovered in 1520 the passage to the Pacific Ocean through the straits bearing his name. Magellan was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1774 and was a corresponding member of the academies of science in Paris Madrid and St. Petersburg. His book on English reflecting instruments published in Paris and London 1775 was declared to be the most complete work on the subject at that period.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF MINERALOGY AXEL FREDERIC CRONSTEDT FOUNDER OF NICKEL GUSTAV VON ENGESTROM JOHN HYACINTH de MAGELLAN AN ESSAY TOWARDS A SYSTEM OF MINERALOGY CHARLES DILLY PRINTER THE POULTON LONDON ENGLAND BRITAIN COUNT LOUIS de BARBIANAO . 17950009078HARVARD UNIVERSITY BOSTON MASSACHUSETTS MA. Good. 1795. On offer is an exceptional and fascinating handwritten notebook of many different and varied aspects of geometry arithmetic trigonometry finance and surveying written by a young man studying at Harvard University in 1795. The book is a terrific example of mathematical and surveying studies at the end of the 18th century especially as it happens at one of the greatest institutes of learning in America. As such these books are incredibly rare to find outside of university archives. The front cover page reveals the mans name William Hardy written in beautiful gothic hand lettering. Definitions which given the definitions of a point line chord curve tangent angle and many other mathematical terms. Going from that base most probably learned in the first day or so of classes the book goes into an exceptional number of intermediate mathematical topics. The study book then begins its main sections under the title: ELEMENTS or First Rudiments of PLAIN Geometry which give three POSTULATES as well as a number of Terms Used in Geometry. From these postulates and terms the book gives 34 Geometrical Problems spanning nine pages. A problem is given such as To describe any pentagon in any given circle and then a diagram is drawn next to it. The next part continues the study of planar geometry with a number of pages on the Construction of the Plain Scale. This section ends with a full page diagram of THE PLAIN SCALE that is certainly a thing of mathematical beauty. There follow a few pages of Another Method of constructing P. Scale and ending with another full page PLAIN SCALE. The notebook then dives into Plain Trigonometry followed by A Solution of Cases of R. Ang. Triangles and a section Of Oblique Ang. Trigonometry. After all this background mathematics the notebook then begins on what this class was most probably based around. The section is entitled Surveying and a definition is given: Surveying in the largest sense of the word is the measuring laying out dividing and leveling land. Mensuration consists of three parts. 1. Measuring the fields. 2. Protracting it. 3. Casting up the contents. Each of these parts is explained in detail with surveying rules and accompanied alongside a number of case problems in which the rule is used to solve practical problems that would arise in this profession. The section contains a number of charts diagrams of shapes and angles and long-form mathematical calculations to solve the problem at hand. This section is 18 pages long and makes up one of the longest sections of the book. Though the next section Mensuration of Superficies and solids is a bit of a mathematical addendum to the surveying section. This chapter has 35 Articles explaining different problems and aspects of Euclidian geometry such as: Art. 6. To measure a triangle.; Art. 11. To measure any regular polygon.; Art. 22. To find the area of a semicircle the diameter being given.; Art. 28. To measure a cube and many more. Each of these articles comes with an explanation of the article at hand as well as diagrams charts and examples needed to understand the problem. This section is followed by a number of sections on mathematical finance. The first sections are: Simple Interest Interest by Decimals Discount and Discount by Decimals. They again include rules on how to calculate interest/discounts alongside questions and examples to use the knowledge practically. For example: Rule 2 Exm. Calculate the interest of £327.10 at 6 percent per annum for 210 days.. It is of interest to note that Hardy uses pounds shillings and pence for the financial equations here. Why he doesnt use the American Dollar which had been officially set up in 1792 is very interesting. It could be that the pound was still the de facto currency base for educated young men to know but I do not have a definitive answer to this question. There are also a number of pages under the title Barter which is explained as The exchanging of one commodity for another and teaches traders to proportion their quantities without cost. It is essentially just mathematical equivalencies. More finance follows with sections about Loss and Gain Equation of PaymentsDiscount by Compound Interest Annuities or Payments in of Compound Interest and Annuities Leases &c. Taken in Reversion at Compound Interest. The study book then returns back to equivalencies with two sections: Alligation Medial which is used to find the quantity of a mixture given the quantities of its ingredients and Alligation Alternate which is used to find the amount of each ingredient needed to make a mixture of a given quantity. Finally the last section deals with mathematical Permutations and Combinations. The cover of the book is a brown burlap which is faded and discolored. The both the front and back cover boards are warped. The book no longer lies flat as the top and bottom of the book both curl upward noticeably. Many of the pages have some discoloration or wear from use and age especially on the edges. Many of the pages are only precariously bound to the spine. The book is roughly 125 pages in length of which there is writing on all but a few. All the writing in the book is in very good condition. Some of the blank ink used shows some fading but for the most part the ink used was probably very good quality as much of it still looks very good. This book is over 220 years old and as such is quite fragile. It should be treated with care. Almost an extraordinary age for a man in prison conditions of the era. The prison was the famous Bicetre and this is a detailed account of the affair. The man had a fake passport and had been arrested by soldiers. This is all the more an exceptional document given the 150 year history of the Bicetre which in its ay was an orphanage military hospital and lunatic asylum. The Bicêtre is most famous as the Asylum de Bicêtre where in 1793 Superintendent Philippe Pinel is credited as being the first to introduce humane methods into the treatment of the mentally ill and this letter and its content may well be a rare exhibit of those new policies. 1796000897NNNMANCHESTER LANCASHIRE UK AFRICA EGYPT. Poor. 1796. On offer is the original handwritten manuscript "Voyages and Travels of Richard Renshaw" of the British Army's heralded Royal Regiment of Artillery Renshaw of the 4th Battalion. Some parts of this manuscript were later published as 'VOYAGE TO THE CAPE OF GOOD HOPE' in 1804. Renshaw retells in detail and with a keen observer's eye the story of his service for Great Britain. He is an educated man who writes insightful and sometimes rollicking accounts of his and the group's adventures. He describes everything he sees through Africa and into Egypt as part of Admiral Nelson's fleet and the ill-fated elderly Scot Lieutenant-General Sir Ralph Abercromby being part of "war reserved for the British nation to annihilate their Napoleon and the French ambitious designs their fleet was attacked defeated and destroyed in Aboukir " An absolutely incredible first hand account of this robust man's life. Whether dodging buffaloes doing a bit of amateur archaeology grave robbing! in Egypt and he does not hesitate to tell all in this very beaten up and we believe incomplete journal. We also suggest that Richard is writing the diary after the fact as he writes of the near past with near total recall and then seems to catch up to himself in around 1801. Here are snippets from the preface and other short quotes: "Voyages and Travels of Richard Renshaw Preface. As the following voyages and travels are now made public I think it is proper to lay before the reader a short acct of my life previous to my leaving England. I was born in ManChester in the County of Lancaster and chiefly educated there. My parents in the early part of my life were in affluent circumstances but in consequence of misfortunes in trade in he order of Divine providence they were visited with the bitter cup of adversity my mother being _____ of delicate feelings . Her constitution was not and terminated in her death. My Father knowing I had a natural inclination for the army taking frequent opportunities to lay before me the shocking numbers in the papers of those slain in previous engagements . I left my fathers house November 1795. I never had the happiness of seeing him after . Without seriously weighing the circumstance of so important a nature I enlisted in the 4th Battalion of the Royal Regiment of Artillery the consequence of this step was in the following pages will inform the reader. I embarked aboard the Crescent Frigate at Spithead on the 28th of February 1796 & sailed in company with the Sceptre sixty four and some few transports the 1st of March the wind being tolerable fair During my time in Africa we trained a Regiment of Hottentots I was attacked by a buffalo but owing to a small lake I escaped from him .On the 17th of August we disembarked the Island of Rhoda and joined Major General Baird On the 12th of December 1801 we marched on Alexandria . During my stay in Alexandria the plague was raging in an astonishing manner " Renshaw has made numerous deletions and corrections to the narrative manuscript for future publication. NOTE: Curiously there is one handwritten note upside down on a blank page titled "Cure for Love" which informs in a rather shaky aged hand a sad unhappy verse. The covers are detached but present the text block in pieces though the narrative is complete from beginning but there are most likely a page or two missing from the end given the way it stops. There is no loss given the narrative begins in 1796 and continues through 1802 over 150 pp or so. The author wrote on the recto pages and saved the verso for later notes clarifications etc. of which there are many. 17980001983JERICHO VERMONT. Good. 1798. On offer is a sensational original relic of late 18th Century religious manifestation being a five 5 page manuscript account of a young girl's religious visions and experiences as detailed and handwritten by an unknown eyewitness. Hannah Coy the 9 year old girl is recorded as having been in a trance and while under its influence having religious revelations of Heaven and Hell and seeing Jesus God and the Devil. The narrator it appears witnessed the child in trance while she saw this vision the writer basically records what Hannah said and saw using Hannah's own words. It begins thusly: "The month of August the 10th day I began to write the following narrative may be depended on as fact and can has been witnessed by great number of those who saw and heard it themselves." The testimony continues describing a noted change in Hannah's demeanour: "Hannah Coy of nine years of age was by nature a brightly active girl and as naturally inclined to childish plays as any of her brothers or sisters but all of a sudden she forsook all her plays and appeared acceding sober for the space of a month. The family all took notice of it and the children could not get her out to play with the and would sometimes reflect upon her for not being willing to play but she would say to them my dear brothers and sisters these plays are but foolish trifles and will not do us any good we must leave them " She goes on to describe Jesus and God her vision of hell and the Devil and that some infants were there sees people she knew in Heaven. "Jesus Christ was pleading for all the poor sinners he was surrounded by thousands of Saints and Angels" Her mother asked if she saw anyone she knew she saw a recently deceased neighbor who was "deaf and dumb and could now sing and speak and praise God." She then sees hell describes the tortured souls and the Devil himself. He tries to grab her but Jesus bid her to not be afraid. Christ told me to return and to tell my parents what I have seen. Tell my father that he must Carry me to our ministers and I must tell the minister all that I have seen and that he must come to my daddys and preach the gospel." We believe based on the paper ink and writing style the book is late 1700s and one online source appears to confirm and identify Hannah's experiences when she related in 1798 the following: "Tending to Edify Astonish and Instruct" Published Narratives of Spiritual Dreams and Visions in the Early Republic ANN KIRSCHNER University of Delaware On a Sunday in September 1798 one can safely assume the manuscript was written a mere month before a large congregation gathered in Jericho Vermont to hear nine-year-old Hannah Coy relate a strange and wonderful story of a vision that had transformed her life.1 She had seen heaven and Christ himself-even his wounded feet and hands-and witnessed "thousands of saints and angels" singing praise to God including a neighbor who in life had been deaf and dumb. Moreover she had also been whisked by Christ to the pit of hell and seen the devil himself-a "dreadful creature" with "dreadful claws with long nails"-and observed "multitudes of poor souls in misery." Trembling at the prospect that this might be her fate she was then assured by Christ that she "was his and should live forever with him in heaven." Her only charge was to return to earth and tell all that she had seen. Two years later her story was published in a small pamphlet that also contained accounts of the visions of two other young women and another of a miraculous healing. 2 Coy's account is but one of a large group of similar pamphlets of dreams and visions that were published in increasing numbers beginning in the 1780s and peaking in the early 1800s paralleling the growth of evangelical Protes1. "A wonderful account of a little girl of nine years old who lives in the town of Jericho in the state of Vermont; by the name of Hannah Coy" Windsor Vt. 1800 1-5. There can be little doubt that this is the very same girl and the manuscript an original testament of her experience. 18020009162BETHEL TOWNSHIP LEBANON COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA. Good. 1802. On offer is an interesting document of early 19th century education an original handwritten note book covering a myriad of subjects related to mathematics. The owner and creator of this book was a man named Henry Snevely also written as Snavely and the book dates from 1802 - 1803. It seems Snevely was born in the United States and lived his whole life in Southeastern Pennsylvania. At the time of the creation of the book Snevely was almost 50 years old an established land owner in Bethel Township Lebanon County. Why he had a book of mathematics is unknown however I have found records of a Henry Snavely who taught at a school in Bethel Township from 1797 onwards. It may be likely that this book is actual not for Henry himself but for the instruction of his students. Either way the book presents a fantastic overview of early 18th century knowledge. The book covers a very large range of topics however Math pertaining to financial matters is dominant throughout. As well there are conversions of Irish and British currency. The primary immigrants to the area at the time of the book were indeed Scotch-Irish so teaching Irish and British currency conversions wouldnt be too far off. Currency exchange in particular is a primary focus owing to the large amount of immigrants to the area. Individual page headings in the book include Exchange many pages Exchange of Arbitrations Barter Profit and Loss Fellowship Fellowship with Time Allegation Media Alternate Partial and Total Square Root Cube Root Arithmetical and Geometric Progression Compound Interest Single and Double Position Reduction Addition Subtraction Multiplication and Division of Fractions and Vulgar Fractions Rule of Three in Fractions and Questions for Exercise. There is a later manuscript memorandum on rear endpaper dated 1829 bearing the names of additional members of the Pennsylvania Snavely clan Molly George and John. The name Martin Rupp also appears in memorandum and our research confirms various Martin Rupps residing in southeastern Pennsylvania during this time. The book is in fair to good condition. The volume is bound in the original stiff paper wraps. The cover is very worn and the spine is torn and partially detached. There is mild age-toning and occasional staining but the internal pages are generally clean. The black ink is still bold and easily legible throughout. The book contains about 85 pages of manuscript entries and the book itself is approximately 90 pages. It measures 12.5 x 8 inches. Biography: Henry Snavely was born on August 2 1755 in Bethel Township Lebanon County Pennsylvania. .Henry Snavely was a Lutheran. At that time he was considered a good scholar and is said to have been a hard student obtaining his knowledge principally by his own exertion. He taught the school from 1797 to 1807.; A report from 1773 shows his farm had 150 acres 5 horses 4 cattle and no servants. 18020002588LUZERNE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA WYOMING COUNTY 1802. On offer is a significant original manuscript relic of Pennsylvania state history dated City of Washington January 20 1802 a mere 27 or so years after the first and second Continental Congresses in 1774 and 1775 and 15 years after Statehood. Handwritten by John Jenkins to the renowned Colonel John Jenkins b.1751 the author's father or brother most likely. The letter reads in part " letter from new York restating our position and had to attend on business .Eleventh day here our petition are not yet presented to Congress Judge Baron from Starkbridge I have given out a number of our coppays of our petition likely regarding the Compromise Act of 1799 to the members of Congress so as to give them a fair understanding of the subject one of the members from Pennsylvania informed me in conversation that they that is the members from Pennsylvania would oppose the petition as it would destroy the Scranton ___." On the reverse side it is stamped with "WASH'N CITY" and "JAN 3" along with "PAID" addressed to Col. John Jenkins Luzerne County Pennsylvania. Another Jenkins name in addition to John is written at the bottom of the page left B. ___Jenkins. Local historians and researchers will no doubt have little problem sorting out the authorship and relationship of the three Jenkins' who are named. HISTORICAL NOTES: from the book WILD YANKEES: Compromise of 1799 "In the spring of 1799 Pennsylvania made the first in a series of moves that would ultimately resolve land disputes in an around the Wyoming Valley. On April 4 the state assembly passed the Compromise Act which allowed settlers that held Connecticut deeds that predate the Trenton Decree to obtain Pennsylvania titles to their lands. The legislation established a three-man-commission empowered to assess the legitimacy of settlers' claims survey their tracts and ascertain their value. Settlers who had their Connecticut deeds confirmed by the commissioners had to pay depending on the value of their farms between eight cents to two dollars per acre in eight annual instalments. The proceeds from these sales went toward defraying the cost of compensating Pennsylvania claimants who lost property to Connecticut settlers. As with the Confirming Act of 1787 the new law encouraged Connecticut claimants holding deeds issued before 1783 to move toward reconciliation with the state and to turn their backs of settlers who held titles issued after the Trenton Decree. After some initial hesitation the lure of secure titles at low prices assured the act's acceptance among Yankee settlers in the fifteen Susquehannah Company towns established before the Trenton Decree. These settlements covered the Wyoming Valley and adjacent lands ." BIO NOTES: From one online source: "Col. John Jenkins was the son of John Jenkins a magistrate and surveyor. Responsive to the first whisper of independence the people of the valley assembled in town meeting to proclaim their hearty approval of the movement. The presiding officer at that meeting was Col. Jenkins; he was moderator and in common with the other patriots assembled devoted their lives and their sacred honor to the great cause of their fellow-man. Of that meeting and its resolves in behalf of liberty Hon. Charles Miner has well said: "I would rather have those patriotic votes to show as the work of an ancestor of mine than the proudest patent of nobility ever granted by a king." Col. John Jenkins was appointed tax collector but was enrolled for military duty and was actively employed from first to last. He served the people with ability and fidelity in the Connecticut general assembly when this was Westmoreland county. His neat and accurate records of surveys from Wilkes-Barre extending a considerable distance into New York are the never-failing authority of civil engineers to this day. He was a democrat and nearly worshiped his ideal Thomas Jefferson while his friend and much a close companion in all those times that tried men's souls Col. John Franklin was an enthusiastic federalist. Here their political lines parted but on the great question of liberty and human rights they were as the steel and magnet. Of his capture while on a scouting expedition near Wyalusing has been told on a preceding page. After a long and cruel captivity he returned and was the first to bring positive information of the invasion. The joy of the people at his safe return was turned to sudden gloom by the cloud then seen to be gathering in the north. He had been only recently married when captured. Mrs. Bertha Jenkins lived to the age of eighty-four years; died in 1841." History of Luzerne County Pennsylvania H. C. Bradsby Editor S. B. Nelson & Co. Publishers 1893. The 13¼" by 8" letter is missing a 1¾ by 1¼ inch square at the bottom middle section and has another ½" square almost halfway down center.
