1930CAT209New York and Environs 1930. Excellent. We find scant information on Henry Reister a professional photographer operating throughout the New York metropolitan region in the early part of the century. His studio moved several times from the Bronx to Bridgewater New Jersey then to Woodlawn New York. This interesting and varied collection from his estate shows the type of work available to a professional photographer operating in New York during the period - architectural shoots product photography events and some portraiture. The opulent wealth of New York’s upper classes during the 1920s is on display in Reister’s architectural work which makes up a large portion of this collection. The burgeoning commercial age is also shown in his product photographs most notably a series of photographs of Remington typewriters a series of photographs of the newly created New York Telephone Directory two photographs of automobiles and a series of brightly-lit interior grocery store displays.

Contents as follows:

Seven images advertising typewriters with five showing a young woman posed with a Remington typewriter; five images of the New York Telephone Directory; five images of brightly lit grocery store interiors most focusing on elaborate lighting on a dairy display; two images of automobiles one showing a man in fine dress posed alongside an automobile the other showing a close-up of a license plate; thirteen varied product images including proto-modernist images of radiators an image of the Cory Smoke Telegraph Indicator three floral still lives and an opulently presented bowl of ice cream; forty-six architectural photographs including a rather stark series of institutional interiors including lavatories extravagant gardens the interiors of a bank on Broadway and high end domestic interiors; six photographs of the Yorkville Social Center Baby Parade of 1916; seven portraits including one of a worker holding two bolts several military portraits and an outdoor portrait of a couple in a garden; Eight scenes from Reister’s personal life most relating to an automobile trip made with his wife in 1930.

Overall a strong representation of pre-Depression New York with many iconic aspects of the city and its environs represented. Despite his low profile Reister was a proficient professional photographer and the images remain quite attractive and in generally very good to fine condition with a few showing small tears at edges. unknown

194925006France: Not Published 1949. These very personal letters & ephemeral items were written to friends of the Strands William Golden & Cipe Pineles and after Golden's death to Cipe & her son Tom. 198022145np ca. mid-1980s. Very good . Square folio brown faux-leather contemporary commercial album. Containing 97 color photographs loosely inserted in compartmented plastic sleeves six to a page. Most 3"x 5" some smaller with some Poloroids. A couple of images trimmed a few more creased. Some annotations to versos. Else well-preserved. Easily very good or better overall.

Large collection of almost 100 color photographs of various cross-dressers assembled by "Marilyn" addressed on versos of several photos likely a fellow enthusiast. With only minor repetition of subjects and many photos stamped with names addresses or inscribed on their versos several lengthy this collections appears to be less a portrait of a local community or established circle and more that of a practitioner reaching out through the mail undoubtedly through zines and personal ads. Further to this cataloguer at least these images seem to document primarily neither drag gay nor transgender subjects but instead to be of a more fetishistic bent — though obviously with some overlap. As the caption on one photo reads: "I really love to wear very sexy sheer silly bra panties garter belts sheer stockings high heel slippers & flowing full length sheer negligee. I feel so much like a very sensuous feminine shemale then." A smaller section 24 total of sexually explicit images segregated at the end of the album lends further credence this view. Dated photos converge around the mid-eighties a period when cross-dressing was still poorly accepted. Indeed the height of the AIDS crisis must have contributed to a feeling of even greater isolation with underground communications such as these often providing the only outlet for fellowship. A valuable document from a sexually marginalized community. hardcover books

194123244Oregon ca. 1941. 117 black and white photographs including 4 medium enlargements and 1 narrow photo scrap the remaining 112 snapshot format. Mounted in an apparently later album to rectos and versos of 9 adhesive card leaves. At least 7 prints appear trimmed to fit into current album mounting. Most firmly adhered to pages. Generally prints about very good.

A scarce and revealing collection of more than 100 views of pre-World War II West Coast motorcycle club culture with a clear outsider sense of identity predating the post-war non-conformity associated with the accepted dawn of modern biker culture by more than a decade. "St. Helen's Motorcycle Club" can be gleaned in raised felt letters to the rear of member's sweaters from 2 separate photographs. License plate and vehicle model views clearly indicate 1941 and print quality to some images suggests slightly earlier as well.

Dozens of views capture leather clad riders atop early-1940's Harley-Davidson and Indian models in apparently ad-hoc flat-track racing hill climbs and group rides; a particularly compelling series of 4 prints chronicles what appears to be a rider crashing through a flaming wall of wood. Several prints of imposing rows of bikes parked along city streets and a single print of riders blocking a Downtown Portland street while riding in a circle in front of onlookers coupled with images of leather-clad members making out and drinking suggest the St. Helen's club reveled in its outsider status. The prevalence of "outlaw" motorcycle clubs rose to prominence after World War II with the infamous Hollister riot of 1947 and the Lee Marvin Marlon Brando film THE WILD ONES 1953 based on events there widely credited with the birthing of rock-and-roll style and 20th century youth culture. Therefore an early primary document from the birth of rock-and-roll style and 20th century youth culture. hardcover books
