1890List1326Costa Rica 1890. Albumen photographs 9 x 7 ½ inches on larger mounts with credits to Rudd y Paynter and the Paynter Bros. Near Fine. H.N. Rudd and the Paynter Brothers Richard and John were photographers who were active in Costa Rica in the 1890s operating out of San Jose. Five of these views show the Rudd y Paynter mark on versos with their address at the Parque Central in San Jose. The Paynters were from the United States arriving in 1874 and first establishing Rudd y Paynter out of a shop in the Parque Central where they also sold marble and art objects. In 1895 the studio changed its name to Paynter Bros. <br /> <br /> Collected here are nine scarce albumen views of Costa Rica from the 1890s. Five of them document a trip up Mt. Turrialba these bear the Rudd y Paynter mark. Of the other other four one image shows a building likely in San Jose with a gathered crowd; one shows a very striking mural and is captured “Corpus Christi / Cartaga Costa Rica June 4 / 96 this shows no photographers mars though the size and format are identical to the others and we presume the photographers to be the Paynter brothers; One shows industrial coffee machinery on “El Canada†the last shows a group of people in front of the bridge over the Rio Grande with a platform showing the markings of the Hamlin Car and Wheel Company of Catwissa PA. The group with the exception of the Corpus Christi image are mounted on uniform heavy cardstock mounts with gilt edges and remain in particularly fine condition with excellent contrast and some light wear to mounts. Overall a scarce group documenting Costa Rica at a time when few photographers operated. unknown
194821273Cheshire England 1948-1954. Very good. 25 thick cards each 8" by 6.5" with brass fasteners holding on a layer of gelatin-silver prints between two to thirteen to each card. Prints have a small identifying number glued to the right edge as reference for small sheet of typewritten captions glued to the card. Overall condition about very good. Several cards have noticeably lost their captions but all photos appear intact. A bit toned and lightly soiled but considerably well-preserved indeed. Housed in a custom gray archival box. <br/><br/>Collection of photographs of death scenes in and around the English county of Cheshire used for investigative purposes. The majority depict traffic accidents of which two involved bicycles colliding with cars. Other incidents include a drowning a man's sudden death while riding a tractor another dying near an open gas pipe a second gas-related incident in a home garage plus three factory/worksite accidents and two falls down flights of stairs. One card shows the name William Gordon written in ink referring either to the photographer or the deceased person. The stark and limited nature of the captions precludes a full understanding of the events as they were used as an evidence tool above all else. Nevertheless an indelible and haunting series of images as well as a useful record of forensic photography. unknown books

Boards lightly rubbed at edges with top corner of front board bumped. Some creasing and edge-wear to tissue guards. One photo perished else apparently complete. Photographs generally fine. Sound and clean overall. Near fine. <br/><br/>Elegant and carefully-assembled photo album of bathers in and around an unidentified lakeside German resort likely in the years following WWI. The album combines well-composed candid and posed shots of bathers with striking portraits that together reveal a talented photographer a kind of Jazz Age Jock Sturges. Seconda edizione, tiratura di testa. Esemplare 607 di 2000 numerati, offerto «Al Fascista Pierluigi Suglia». In più che buone condizioni (fioriture alle prime e ultime carte). Pubblicato in tiratura limitata ad personam nell’ottobre 1939, il libro conobbe una seconda edizione aumentata e modificata nel febbraio 1940, distinta in tre serie: una rarissima «serie speciale per i Sansepolcristi»; una tiratura di testa di 2000 esemplari numerati legata in corda (presente esemplare); una tiratura normale in brossura con sovracoperta di 10000 esemplari dichiarati. -- «Il covo» è la celebrazione delle origini del fascismo nella prima sede del «Popolo d’Italia», al numero 35 di via Paolo da Cannobio in Milano, a ridosso di piazza Diaz. La palazzina, anonima e triste, militarizzata come un covo appunto, assurge dunque a simbolo delle origini umili e subitamente pugnaci del fascismo. Il libro è soprattutto fotografico, pubblicando suggestivi e inediti scatti bianco e nero degli ambienti, dei documenti, dei personaggi, impaginati con grande maestria dall’architetto Giuseppe Pagano (grafico del «Popolo d’Italia») accanto a memorabili frasi mussoliniane stampate in rosso. -- Il libro è un impressionante monumento di avanguardia tipografica fascista, con i netti contrasti nero-bianco appena intervallati dai testi rossi in grande formato, le fotografie a piena pagina, le pagine e mezze pagine ripiegate (soluzioni che si ritrovano quasi identiche in un altro coevo capolavoro grafico ‘dell’orrore’, «A passo romano» di Fortunato Depero), la legatura a spirale ma in corda grezza coordinata con l’astuccio in canapa stampiglata in nero alla maniera dei sacchi di caffè — come a rileggere in chiave intimamente fascista le moderne legature ‘spiralblock’ usati dai maestri grafici quali Munari, Ricas ecc. E non meno impressionante è la drammatica storia personale del designer, Giuseppe Pagano (passato nel fronte antifasicsta durante la guerra, venne imprigionato e morì a Mathausen pochi giorni prima della liberazione).
