26948This American violinist and conductor led Chicago's Spiering Quartette founded the Spiering Violin School and directed the Chicago Musical College; in 1911 he was appointed concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic Society under Gustav Mahler whom he briefly replaced. AMuQS heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card Chicago May 1900. Very good. Mild age toning; faint mounting trace at each corner. Spiering apparently was asked by an admirer for a snippet from an original composition for at the center of this heavy card he has affixed a 3" X 1½" slip bearing two small neatly penned measures from a composition identified as "Scherzo Op. 2" above with place and date penned just below. Below this slip Spiering signs large and bold. Very unusual. unknown

Accompanied by a modern glossy book photograph a reproduction of a superb half-length portrait of a standing Spalding in middle age sporting three-piece suit fiddle tucked casually under one arm hand wielding bow and other fist resting jauntily on hip. In his usual hurried scrawl that makes the text of this quotation unfortunately illegible Sothern pens two brief lines perhaps "What a - - / love is & etc / Highest Buddha" -- or perhaps not! in a rich brown ink signing "Yrs EH Sothern" as usual. 32921This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet" "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears" "Whitetail: King of the Forest" "The Three Puppies" "The Small One" "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg" "The Bluebird" "The Night Before Christmas" "The Enchantment of Santa Claus" "The Christ Child" "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens" "Polly Parrot" "Piccolino" "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near-complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko" written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages front board graphic frontispiece pages 21 and 31. Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards most with typeset text blocks pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature though many contain pencilled coloring instructions etc. Four drawings are present in oversize form two 22" X 15" two 15" X 18½". Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George" which debuted in France in 1939. "Jocko" is the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. It's most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period. unknown
25860This American artist is often remembered for his friendship with Carl Sandburg which resulted in his striking 1968 U.S. postage stamp; other stamps include his award-winning 1972 "Sidney Lanier" and the 4-stamp 1973 series "Rise of the Spirit of Independence." ANS 1p 8¼" X 11" Pineville PA 1973 October 9. Addressed to Mr. Johnston. Near fine. Two horizontal mailing folds. Friendly "Thank you for your gratifying reaction and comment on my stamp designs." in Smith's handsome calligraphic hand. No doubt refers to his award-winning 4-stamp "Rise of the Spirit of Independence" stamps which had been released the previous month. Accompanied by a stunning 4pp heavy stock 8½" X 11" color leaflet issued in 1953. Near fine. Smith's 1978 centennial "Carl Sandburg" stamp which shows a left-facing Sandburg in profile was based on a charcoal portrait made much earlier showing a right-facing Sandburg published here for the first time in 1953 -- a full quarter century before its stamp appearance! The front cover of this glossy leaflet features this portrait which once open pages 2 and 3 shows on the lefthand side a manuscript fair copy of Sandburg's then-new poem "Names" in his distinctive script dated from Connemara Farm Flat Rock North Carolina 25 December 1952. The righthand side shows the same text beautifully typeset. Rear leaf page 4 indicates "First publication of CARL SANDBURG'S most recent poem" and "Some time ago we asked Mr. Sandburg for permission to print this poem as a keepsake for his seventy-fifth birthday party." Thus this booklet represents the true first appearance of this well-known poem which begins: "There is only one horse on the earth / and his name is All Horses. / There is only one bird in the air / and his name is All Wings. / There is only one fish in the sea / and his name is All fins." Though no publisher is cited on this bibliographically-challenged printed piece the publisher was perhaps Broadcast Music Inc. of New York -- whose president and founder Carl Haverlin was an old friend of Sandburg's and was instrumental in organizing the celebrations honoring his friend's 75th. Sandburg at that time was at the height of his fame and these fetes garnished much press coverage. It's not known how many of these booklets were produced but likely a modest number for private distribution to friends and colleagues. A superb letter and scarce printed keepsake. unknown

40510This English naval commander took part in several engagement of the American Revolutionary War: hewent to the relief of Acre while plenipotentiary at Constantinople and compelled Napoleon to raise siege 1799; he destroyed the Turkish fleet off Abydos 1807; in 1810 he became vice admiral and in 1821 full admiral. Unsigned integral address portion 3 3/4" X 6" n.p. n.y. Very good. Two original faint folds visible. At center of this address portion Smith boldly addresses it to "Messrs. Eversfield & Horne / Smith Street / Westminster." Small illegible postal cancellation at right; fragments of red wax seal still present. Not signed but an interesting attractive handwriting example -- and inadvertently includes his last name. unknown
36383This colorful and legendary steamboat captain pioneered steamboating on the upper Mississippi River in the mid-19th century; he was first president of the Galena Dubuque and Minnesota Packet Company and founded the city of Winona Minnesota. Partly-printed DS 1p 8" X 10" Chicago IL 1871 January 1. Very good. Faint age toning; paper loss approx. 3½" X 2" at upper left corner affecting portion of printed text but not holograph portion. Printed "Judgment Note" promissory note acknowledging that Smith owes Nathan Corwith five thousand dollars at ten percent annual interest. Signed boldly twice by Smith. Verso bears docket penned and signed WILLIAM R. ROWLEY 1824-86 one of Galena's famous nine generals and at this date the circuit clerk; this native New Yorker enlisted as a first lieutenant in Company D of the 45th Illinois Volunteers in 1861 promoted to captain in 1862 and lieutenant colonel in 1864 and finally named brevet general; he fought at Fort Donelson Shiloh and Vicksburg; in 1864 he was named military secretary on General Grant's staff. Accompanied by a second larger 8½" X 14" Partly-printed Document Signed Chicago IL 1871 n.d. Very good. Printed "Narr. and Cognovit" literally Complaint and Confession legal document in which the top two-thirds the Narration portion consists of plaintiff Nathan Corwith referring to the promissory note just described of defendant Orrin Smith and demanding payment signed by Corwith's attorney M.M. Miller and the lower third the Cognovit portion consists of Smith's attorney Edward A. Small acknowledging same -- all couched in delightfully archaic and convoluted legalese of course. Verso of this document too bears a docket penned and signed by William R. Rowley. M.M. MILLER - was a noted Galena Illinois attorney who left Yale University to return home and join the famous Washburne Lead Mine Regiment during the Civil War; he was made commander of a colored regiment the 9th Louisiana Regiment in which every man was wounded or killed in the famous June 7 1863 Battle of Milliken's Bend part of the Vicksburg Campaign. EDWARD A. SMALL 1829-82 was another noted Galena attorney though in 1869 he relocated to Chicago. Plaintiff NATHAN CORWITH 1819-89 was a noted Galena pig lead broker clothier and then head of a prominent banking family that founded the Bank of Galena which he served as president. Why Captain Smith borrowed $5000 a huge sum of money in 1871 from Corwith is unknown though it's a reasonable assumption that it involved river commerce in some way -- perhaps purchase of another packet boat An intriguing and scarce pair in any case involving and signed by a number of prominent northwest Illinoisans. Documents signed by Captain Smith are rarely encountered. unknown
32497This Civil War officer served as lieutenant colonel later brevet brigadier general with the Second Corps where he was chief commissary of subsistence; he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his October 27 1864 service at Hatchers's Run Virginia where he led part of a brigade that captured Confederate soldiers and their flag and saved artillery. Clipped portion of a printed Document Signed 8½" X 2¼" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Below the printed line "therein expressed; that their services were rendered as stated and were necessary for the public service" Smith signs in full large and bold in brown ink on a dotted line at lower right. Below his signature his rank "Lt. Col. & Chief / 2nd Corps" is handsomely penned in another hand. Likely clipped from a routine military form of some sort. unknown

A bit age toned about the edges with paper clip stain at upper left; light staining and wrinkling at blank bottom of second leaf. Urges this unknown writer to "come to the Writers club dinner Tuesday evening at the Hotel Brevoort. We're expecting a good time and you will add to it if you will please come prepared to read two or three of your charming poems! Won't you do that" Boldly penned and signed in full. The "iley in question is not James Whitcomb who died in 1916. Interesting. unknown

Probable sole edition tight and nice of these essays by the American pianist and teacher 1851-1940. Smith boldly signs a front free endpaper in purple ink adding the curious inscription: "Flee standardized concert / playing -- There is little else" and a postscript "Nine muses inform modern / music." At top is the ownership signature of Chicago pianist John G. Leiser dated 15 August 1926. Laid in is the front portion of the original envelope addressed by Smith and signed at upper left. Uncommon. Smiley owner of the Mohonk Mountain House a prestigious Ulster County New York summer resort began the Lake Mohonk Conference on International Arbitration an annual event that lasted until 1916 and helped create the Permanent Court of Arbitration at The Hague Netherlands which still functions today; upon Smiley's death in 1912 his position as host was assumed by his brother Daniel well known in climatology circles for beginning an official daily weather reading at Lake Mohonk on January 1st 1896 that continues to this day at the aptly-named Daniel Smiley Research Center. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Mohonk Lake NY 25 September 1913. Addressed to General Horatio King 1837-1918 Medal of Honor-winning Civil War soldier politician and author. Very good. Lightly age toned more so near edges with light edgewear. Nice and relevant content on letterhead of the famed conference for which he's best known: "Accept my best thanks for the bronze memento of the recent Gettysburg celebration" he writes "as well as for the very appropriate verses written by you. These are appreciated by me as one who counts the Gettysburg celebration as being a marked event in national which is after all a large part of the international peace." Boldly signed in full in brown ink. Unusual and interesting. unknown
25309Possibly the most famous and certainly the most prolific postage stamp and banknote designer and engraver of all time with more than 1000 stamps to his credit this Polish-born Swedish artist accomplished his first postage stamp for Poland in 1951; in 1959 he began designing stamps for Sweden and numerous other countries. Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Philadelphia Pennsylvania on 1983 March 24 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped -- AND below this cancelled in Stockholm Sweden on the same date! Single 20-cent "Treaty of Amity and Commerce Between U.S. and Sweden 1783" at upper right and nearly-identical Swedish version of same stamp below. Fine. Cachet at left features a head-and-shoulders portrait of Slania with printed caption beneath which identifies this stamp as "His First U.S. Postal Issue." Just below his portrait Slania signs boldly in silver ink. Very uncommon. unknown

Sutherland Jackson possibly John Hughlings Jackson 1835-1911 the English neurologist. Very good. Minor soiling. On the verso of a scarce pictorial promotional handbill for his book "Segesta Selinunte and the West of Sicily" Sladen thanks Jackson for birthday wishes "Such letters are among the greatest privileges which author's receive" and discusses portraits of and interviews with himself. He talks too of the availability of his volumes of verse: "But the best book to judge me by is the latest 'Segesta Selinunte and the West of Sicily' or the great three guinea works entitled 'In Sicily'."
