Laid in are two 1946 autograph letters signed from the artist in Shiprock New Mexico where he created a series of 60 lithographs on the ceremonial dances of the Navaho while residing on a Navaho reservation. Each letter is two pages - February 24 1946 -Dear Gus; and November 19 in which he mentions a forthcoming book of his art with the text being written by John Collier commissioner of Indian Affairs later published as Patterns And Ceremonials Of The Indians Of The Southwest. Additionally two half flyers for the artist's exhibition of Indian subjects - October 20 to November 7 1947 or 1948 at Arthur H. Harlow Galleries NYC are laid in. Book is fine in a fine dust jacket. Large bold signature in brown ink 2 3/4" X 1 3/4" tipped to 4½" X 7" album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. Slight age toning. Below this clipped signature is tipped another slip 3" X 2½" on which is penned in minute 19th century script: "The autograph of John Talbot is the Earl of Shrewsbury the great book collector -- it is genuine & I got it from a person who purchased it in a copy of Wordsworth at the Alton Towers Sale of his library" signed "Hahnhaus." Handsome matte finish half-length portrait of a young Sheridan in pin-striped three-piece suit seated with legs crossed one hand clutching a cigarette and the other presumably a music score. In a dark area at lower right Sheridan signs and inscribes boldly in white ink: "For / Richard Copley / In Sincere / appreciation / Frank Sheridan." Great contrast. 26753This prolific novelist's Westerns are highly praised for their authenticity; his first book was "The Range Riders" short stories 1911 and first novel was "The Two Gun Man" 1911 and dozens followed; many ended up on the silent screen with screenplays penned by Seltzer. TMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. ca. 1923. Near fine. Double spaced large margined typescript of page 14 of a manuscript titled "Sunset." Seltzer signs large and bold in black ink across the lower margin and in the large left margin adds "Page from / Latest work / entitled 'Sunset." In the right margin Seltzer has penned a few small ink text corrections. Fine example of a working page from what appears to be a fairly finished draft. Either this novel was never published or it was published under a different title for no Selzter novel titled "Sunset" was ever published. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Johannsen's original 8½" X " file folder bearing his printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen accompanies this item. unknown
