Partly-printed ADS 1p 17" X 11" n.p. 1863 December 1. Near fine. Form for obtaining payment for servants filled out and signed by Scofield who adds rank and title "1st Lieut. & Act. Topographical Engineer / 3d. Division 23d. A.C." He checks various columns to claim one months' pay and subsistence for his servant "John" whose complexion eyes and hair he all notes as "Black." He also notes payment coming from U.S. Army Paymaster John Coon -- his uncle by the way -- and Coon also signs. One of Scofield's most notable monuments is his Civil War monument "These Are My Jewels" -- a document from the 21-year-old future architect from his Civil War period is extremely unusual and desireable. unknown

Very good. Apparently the lower right portion of a pay slip from one of Schuyler's postings as a Consul signed boldly in brown ink with "salary for quarter ending" in his hand above; after the printed word "Consul" beneath his signature he pens the word "General." Undated but signed either during his tenure as American Consul General in Constantinople 1876-78 Birmingham 1878 or Rome 1879-80. unknown

Bold strong signature typical "C. Schurz" 2½" X 1¼" slip n.p. Very good. Mild age toning with paper clip rust mark at upper left touching upon the "C." An appealing war-date example of this extraordinary figure's signature with "Maj Genl." penned beneath it and another rather illegible line bpenned beneath that may read "Dec. 23d 1863". Schurz was raised to the rank of major general in March 1863 which would make this possible 1863 date logical. Accompanied by an outstanding 1860s vintage steel-engraved group portrait entitled "Defenders of the Union" along the bottom heavy stock 6" X 9" n.p. n.y. Twelve superb individual portraits each within its own oval decorative frame with Rosecrans at upper center and Sigel Weitzel Meagher and other Union generals surrounding him -- Schurz at upper right. Near fine. Quite handsome. War-date Schurz are encountered far less often that post-war examples. unknown

Near the bottom of a one sentence typed note dated 6 April 1966 sent him by noted Lincoln Scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 on letterhead of "The Civil War Round Table of New York" Schary pens a bold reply in blue ballpoint. Gates had asked Schary "If you can make this one I would be very pleased to have you attend as my guest" referring no doubt to a Civil War Round Table guest lecture -- to which Schary replied "Dear Mr. Gates -- I would have enjoyed being there -- by some breakdown of U.S. Postal Service -- your invitation reached me on the 20th of April -- Perhaps next time -- Thanks -- Dore Schary." Most unusual in this form! Schary produced the 1955 documentary "The Battle of Gettysburg" hence his proven interest in the topic. unknown

Signed Printed Document 8" X 10" 7pp recto and verso; 4 leaves New York NY 1974 December 6. Near fine. Stapled at upper left as issued; two faint horizontal original folds. Standard mimeographed press release issued by the "United States Delegation to the General Assembly" titled "Statement by Ambassador John Scali. on Strengthening the Role of the United Nations." In a blank area at top center of the first page the ambassador boldly pens "with best wishes / from / John Scali" in black fineline. In this speech Scali deplores "the growing tendency of this Organization to adopt one-sided unrealistic resolutions that cannot be implemented" as well as "a new threat -- an arbitrary disregard of United Nations Rules even of its Charter." He goes on to cite numerous instances of both closing with: ".we must now renew our commitment to the central principles of tolerance and harmony upon which the United Nations charter was built. We must redouble our efforts to use this Organization as the world's ultimate instrument for compromise and negotiation. I pledge my nation to these efforts." Most unusual in this form. unknown

40357This London-born American artist was an important and prolific engraver of book illustrations and banknotes and pioneered the use of mezzotint engravings. AQS 1p 6 3/4" X 3 3/4" n.p. 1878 August 7. Near fine. On a lined slip Sartain handsomely pens a six-line poem titled "Lines for my Library" which reads as follows: "Health industry content prints pictures books / And friends to share them with in cozy nooks. / Leading a tranquil life in thoughtful joy / Exempt from envy greed or care's alloy; / Still ready here on earth to act any part / Or with death's Angel cheerfully depart." Boldly signed and dated at the conclusion. A charming piece with appropriate mention of that around which Sartain's life revolved: "prints pictures books." Whether this stanza was ever published has not been determined. Accompanied by a modern 8½" X 11" reproduction of line drawing head-and-shoulders portrait of Sartain later in life. unknown

Single 8-cent "Sidney Lanier American Poet" stamp at upper right. NOT a First Day Cover -- but an imaginative collector had this cover cancelled on the day of Saroyan's 1908 birth -- August 31 -- in the city of his birth Fresno which is also where he died. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address -- but Saroyan's bold and huge 5½"! signature in black fineline fills the "sweet spot." For some reason Saroyan signs this piece on the verso two more times -- on the first in black ballpoint his pen skips badly so he signs a second time in bright pink marker. TLS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1966 May 10. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates Literary Editor of the Lincoln Herald 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "Radio Corporation of America" letterhead Sarnoff discusses a biography of him that Eugene Lyons had authored: "Thanks you for your kind letter. and the reprint of your excellent review of my biography which appeared in the 'Lincoln Herald.' I am naturally pleased that you found the book so rewarding and I appreciate your thoughtfulness in writing to me." Early in 1966 Harper & Row had published a book by Sarnoff's cousin Eugene Lyons "David Sarnoff: A Biography." Large bold signature in blue ink. Accompanied by a fine glossy 9" X 7" black and white news agency photograph International News Photos a candid closeup of Sarnoff smiling alongside a beauty contestant winner. Caption at bottom which dates this 23 April 1956 describes the scene: "David Sarnoff RCA chairman and chairman of the National Security Training Commission names Barbara Lyman Washington Cherry Blossom Queen an honorary colonel in the Washington Army Reserve at a kick-off luncheon for military reserve week. unknown

Attractive head-and-bare-shoulders closeup of the singing sensation in barely-visible sequined top gazing upward soulfully. She inscribes the upper right area large and bold in black ink "To / Donald M. Burnell: / Best Wishes / & / Good Luck / Jodie / Sands / 2/20/58." This lovely and quite unusual item was likely created for some now-forgotten promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. The penniless Buñuels initially spent a few precarious months living in New York. Luis Buñuel found himself forced to ask Dalihis longstanding friend in exile along with Gala during these yearsto lend him some money. His request was refused in no uncertain terms putting an end to the two men's friendship. Thus it was Calder whom Luis had perhaps already met in Paris in the 1920s who put the whole family up in his Upper Side apartment. Juan Luis Buñuel the artist's godson sensed that his interest in sculpture began in this same period: When Dali told my father he would not lend him any money he contacted him Calder. He offered his house to us and we lived with his family for a time. I can only vaguely remember it but it was then that I started to become interested in sculpture and he encouraged me Anton Casto Juan Luis una entrevista. Despite the geographical distance that would come to separate them Alexander Calder would remain a friend of the Buñuel family. The relationship between the artist and the film-maker is however almost entirely absent from the biographies and this correspondence is a rare testimony to the profound connection between the sculptor and the Buñuel family. unknown
