Original dark blue covers string-bound Japanese style fukuro toji with the pink printed paper title labels. A nice 18th century edition of this work in good impression. Originally published in the 1720's. Though the artist is unnamed several candidates have been mentioned including Ooka Shumboku. 18th century editions of Toba-e books are becoming increasingly uncommon. In a custom clasped chitsu case. The covers are worn but overall a good copy of this book. An excellent example of the somewhat madcap humor of the Toba-e genre. With a bookseller's advertisement at the end which indicates this edition of the book was part of a series of Toba-ehon brought out by the same publisher - SANGOKUSHI OGI NO MATO and TOBA GURUMA. unknown books
19730N.p. Chicago: 1969. Original silk-screened poster in three colors 23" x 29". Browned at margins but image area bright and clean. Archivally hinged to acid-free backing in gallery frame. Brian Flanagan b. 1946 was a member of both SDS and the Weathermen and directly connected to the fatal Greenwich Village apartment explosion in which three Weathermen were killed while preparing for a bomb attack on Fort Dix Flanagan had reputedly left the apartment briefly for more supplies. This extremely rare poster promotes Flanagan's parodic write-in campaign for Mayor of Chicago during the Days of Rage. Following a fateful run-in with City Attorney Richard Elrod on the streets of Chicago in which Elrod was left with a broken neck and partial paralysis Flanagan was tried for attempted murder and inciting mayhem. He was eventually acquitted on all charges but the case became a cause celebre for the Weathermen and other radical left groups. An extremely ephemeral piece likely produced in tiny quantities and posted even less. unknown books

1910011887The Alps: private 1910. Hardcover. Fine. An astonishingly well-preserved pressed Alpine floral album assembled from plants collected on a motor journey in the summer of 1910 that starts in Gibraltar then Naples and spends most time in and around St Moritz and Mt Muraigl. The collector is anonymous but we might assume she he was American as a postcard laid-in is addressed to New Hampshire. We can assume the album with the titles FLORA ALPINA: GENEROSO KULM on its cover was purchased at the Hotel Generosa one of several in the region where the flowers were collected which catered to motoring tourists of the period. Oblong approx 13" x 9" cobalt blue cloth with gilt titles and decoration front cover floral patterned endpapers in red and gold 20 leaves pages. A total of 27 specimens each most delicately arranged so as to display optimally stalk leaf and flower each with a daintily handwritten description identifying type of flower or species place and date of collection most August 1910 sometimes with the most charming notations which we have highlighted in bold in the page-by-page listing below . There is virtually no deterioration of specimens each conveying still the texture and weight of each plant. Laid-in is a un-stamped postcard in German of Pontresina from which the album has a specimen which pictures a number of hotels on the mountain slopes addressed to New Hampshire USA. First Edition. Octavo. Full leather with raised bands on spine stamped in gilt. This delightful book features the tale of a family trip to North Wales as told in verse and photography. INSCRIBED by the author unknown to an Ellen Pitman and dated in the year of publication. With 55 original mounted photographs many quite good albeit discolored along the edges. The typeface throughout is particularly lovely and a good sample of font from this period. Comical woodcuts at the end of each chapter. 51238Germany 1968. Original silk-screened poster printed in black and red measuring 84 à 59 cm. Very good or better. A remarkably drastic anti-war poster issued as a fake poster for the fourth Documenta in Kassel held in 1968. The fourth installment of the famous contemporary art fair - considered the most important European art fair of the decade - heavily featured American art especially Pop Art and Op-Art including works by Andy Warhol. The press conference prior to the opening of the show was interrupted by protests that included artists such as Wolf Vostell and Jörg Immendorff who reacted against the relative lack of political contributions as well the dearth of works of Fluxus and Action art in the exhibition.<br/><br/>The artist and publisher of this work are unknown and as of February 2021 the poster could not be traced by us via KVK OCLC. unknown books

Front and back panels of wraps detached but present with the paper covering the spine mostly perished. Marginal annotations in pencil throughout. The second edition of this privately published and circulated utopian proposal to create an organized intelligentsia and foster human creativity against capitalism. Published around Whitsun in Prague it includes reactions from readers who had received the first version of the text. A third publicly published edition would follow later this same year. The work was written by Viktor Hueber a former Austrian captain who became a member of the circle which published the short-lived magazine Der Anfang in which Benjamin published his first poems and essays. Hueber was later associated with Franz Pfemfert's better known periodical Die Aktion and early issues of the magazine bore the subtitle "Publikationsorgan der Organization der Intelligenz" a reference to this work though subsequent efforts to create an actual organization based on the book's principles failed due to infighting Portner p. 140. Benjamin discusses the book in a September 15 1913 letter to Carla Seligsohn the first person he'd met who had also read the book. "Those of us who understand Hueber feel our youth complete only in the presence of his ideas- the others who feel noth- ing are not young. They have simply never been young. They took pleasure in their youth only when it was over just a memory. They did not know the great joy of its presence which we are now feeling and which I sense in your words . But in every individual who is born no matter where and turns out to be young there is not 'improvement' but perfection from the very start. This is the goal that Heuber so messianically feels is near . " McCole analyzing this same letter notes that this appears to be Benjamin's first use of the term "Messianic" in his writings McCole p. 61. The idea would haunt Benjamin's subsequent works on history and reach its conclusion in the second thesis in On the Concept of History written just before his march into the mountains. "The past carries with it a secret index by which it is referred to its resurrection. There is an agreement and an appointment between us and the generations of the past. For we have been expected upon this earth. Like the generations before us we have been given a weak messianic power which the past can lay claim to. This claim is not to be settled lightly. A revised edition was also published in 1817. Fisk first notes this in 1824 as a reprint of the London 1806 edition and notes that it was reprinted in England in 1809 1813 1819 and at other times. The name of the compiler has never been made public. 4060N.P. Late 19th century. Comprised of four manuscript pages on four unlined legal sheets composed in a single hand in pencil. Trifold lines on each. Text incomplete. Possibly an essay the use of brackets and underlining for emphasis heavily imply that the present work was intended for public reading. Anonymous in nature the writer's gender geography and age remain unknown. What becomes clear however in the document left behind is that logical arguments for women's rights were becoming mainstream and familiar across the country and were being used widely in grassroots efforts.<br/><br/>As the National Woman Suffrage Association geared up for the next phase of its campaign at the turn of the century its rising leader Carrie Chapman Catt increased the number of pamphlets and printed materials being distributed on the organization's behalf. These provided pro-suffrage activists with rhetorical responses phrases arguments and a vocabulary that was unified and shared across the cause. Many of them are present throughout this speech suggesting Catt's success in reaching and shaping grassroots activity. "Taxation without representation" "Will the balloy benefit the working woman is the question of the hour" and "'The exercise of the right of the franchise will degrade woman' is a narrow minded coward's device" are only a few examples of how this piece links to a more national movement. <br/><br/>Susan B. Anthony Elizabeth Cady Stanton and their protege Catt were also aligned in using reason logic law and economics as the basis for women's equality arguments. The present speech occasionally departs into broader praise for women's contributions -- for example to the Cotton State International Exhibition and to the World's Fair at Chicago -- but it leans most directly into an economic argument. Tackling the misguided anti-suffrage claim that giving women the vote or giving women equal pay will threaten male power the writer shows how equality in both fields will be to the benefit of all parties. Income inequality the writer reasons is a root cause of poverty. "A man will set his price upon his labor and if he cannot get it will fold his hands and say 'I can't afford to work for less wages and will not' and if there is no woman who will come to the rescue and take the position for less the employer pays the man his price; but it is no unusual thing for the wife and daughters of the man to support him through the interim or even longer on half wages." Ultimately "women who can do as efficient work as man and as much of it and are faithfull in the discharge of their duties deserve as much pay." The same argument is then applied to the franchise to the combining of men and women's voices to create political change and to shape the future.<br/><br/>A research rich opportunity for studying activist rhetoric the spread and use of activist vocabularies grassroots versus national campaigns and the connection of economic and employment concerns to the vote. unknown books

Among the cases is the 16th century story of Martin Guerre later used by Janet Lewis for her novella The Wife of Martin Guerre Colt Press 1941; that's followed by stories of a man who "debauched" a young woman but is saved from execution by that woman; Mary Margaret de Aubrey who poisoned her father and two brothers; the celebrated history of Urbain Grandier condemned as a Magician; a child claimed by two women to be its mother; Madam Tiquet who attempted to "assassinate" her husband. 3001S.l. n.d. 20th century. Watercolor on paper. Matted visible 163 x 83 mm and framed 257 x 150 mm. This weird and wonderful watercolor may be something we will forever regret selling at any price. It is unsigned but clearly by an artist of considerable imagination. We find the image compelling and highly curious: in the shadow only one hand is holding the mask and yet the girl is firmly grasping it with two. What is the significance of this demonic mask and why would a girl be presenting it above her head in a manner that could almost be described as ritualistic The child seems to gaze away from the viewer but who - or what - is she looking at We unable to explain our fascination with this watercolor. For those who are similarly ensorcelled: no explanation is required. unknown books
