Sixty eight pages or loose sheets from physicians or pharmacists of prescriptions to treat various ailments and sickness are bound in this small volume. There are many additional pages all blank. This is an interesting collection of recipies as the originator of many is noted or signed at the end of the prescribed treatment. Included is a rare printed prescription form from John Martin Bigelow M.D. who was both physician and botanist. The recipe is written out in ink. Bigelow made significant contributions to the Mexican Boundary Survey as collector and classifier. He and C. C. Parry were the major collectors of plants. On a second exploration for the Railroad series Bigelow found the Parthenium argentatum a rubber-yielding plant commonly known by its Mexican name 'guayule.' <br/><br/> hardcover books

A commanding view of Ludlow Castle in Shropshire.<br/> <br/>After the Norman invasion a string of castles was planned along the English/Welsh border to guard against the unconquered Welsh and Ludlow held one of the strongest defensive positions. The castle was built by Walter de Lacy in the late 11th century and his family retained the lordship until the end of the 13th century. It then passed through various hands until it was taken over by the Mortimer family. In 1425 it was passed to Richard Plantagenet the leader of the Yorkists in the Wars of the Roses but it was taken and sacked by the Lancastrians in 1459. In 1461 when Richard's son became Edward IV the castle became Crown property and remained so for 350 years. Edward and Richard the two princes in the Tower spent most of their childhood at Ludlow and Edward was there when he heard of his father's death and his accession to the throne as Edward V. They went to London for his coronation but were imprisoned in the Tower and shortly afterwards murdered. Henry VII's eldest son Prince Arthur and his wife Catherine of Aragon were staying at Ludlow when he died in 1502 and his heart is buried there. His death led his younger brother to become Henry VIII on their father's death and to marry Arthur's widow who became the first of Henry's six wives. The buildings fell into disrepair during the 18th century but were restored by the Earl of Powis in 1771. Published by J. Deeley, No. 95 Berwick Street unknown books

Very rare Spanish legal document concerning tithes certified between the Archbishop of Granada Alonso Bernardo de los Rios y Guzman served 1677-92 and the Prior of the Carthusian monastery of Granada. While the text offers a fascinating and surprisingly detailed account of this ecclesiastical suit and is especially rich in prosopographical material the work is primarily of importance for its early copperplate engraving of the Virgin of Atocha depicted as the miraculous patroness of Madrid. The revered statue a wooden carving now thought to date from the thirteenth century is here depicted clothed in its golden baroque regalia and crowned with radiating halos for centuries the Virgin accrued the rich votive offerings of royal visitors. Housed in the Basilica de Neustra Señora de Atocha in Madrid the Virgin was long especially favored by the kings and queens of Spain and her presence on the title of this legal document functions as a manner of royal certification the text ends with the printed approval of Carlos II here simply "YO EL REY". OCLC and KVK locate only one copy of this text that housed at the Universidad de Sevilla. Not in Palau; the present copy collates with the Seville copy. <br/> <br/> unknown books

The broadside actually pre-dates publication of the first journal issue by some six months; and though earlier materials by the same core group of authors primarily Robert Chasse were published in 1967-8 these were issued prior to the admission of the American Section all under the imprint of "The Council for the Liberation of Daily Life." Highly curious and apparently unpublished German Romantic play concerning the "Death of Lottchus" in Part 1 and his ghost in Part 2 "The Happiness of Marriage." The action takes place in Rubeland Saxony-Anhalt. Other performers include Flanko Wolf Fritzus and his wife Perdestalla Liebling and Maloss. Broadside n. d. ca 1780 ; date obtained from a himmelsbrief at Yale closely resembling identical dimensions similar border similar typography; 7 3/4 x 12; single sheet recto only; several crease lines with small punctures at intersections; age-toning to margins; a few small nicks to edges; illustrated with a geometrical border; double columns; good to very good. Himmelsbrief in Pennsylvania Dutch or Himmelsbriefe in German was a religious document which according to the text had been invented by a gypsy in Prussia in 1714 and had been first printed in Koeningsberg in 1715. It gave a prayer which was supposed to protect the family owning the broadside from fire pestilence and lightning. It also assured pregnant women that carrying it on their body would repel witchcraft and sorcery. Though extremely popular with the Pennsylvania Dutch and wildly published in German in the late 18th and all through the 19th centuries the "heavenly letters" were also printed in English and various Scandinavian languages. Good with five small holes and a creased scrape crease down middle from being mounted on a stick either for picketing or as a yard sign verso toned and soiled. Colors still very bright.<br /> <br /> <p>A rare political sign opposed to The Oregon Prohibition of Net Fishing on Coastal Waters Bill also known as Measure 6 with striking graphics typically anti-Japanese in the wake of Pearl Harbor and America's entry into WWII; although a cursory contemporary glance at the bill makes any connection to Japan highly dubious. "The measure would have prohibited all net fishing in coastal streams and bays except those exempted" according to Ballotpedia. It was soundly defeated. Np unknown books

This account appears to have been a draft and may have been intended for publication there are numerous corrections changes and emendations throughout the work. The unidentified author traveled by rail from Yellowstone to Seattle and from there to Alaska by steamer. The author visited Ketchikan Seward Anchorage Fairbanks where time was spent with the Mayor Valdez Juneau Prince William Sound Cordova Columbia Glacier etc. The author comments upon the events of the trip and gives interesting information on accommodations for tourists describes the scenery and topography a twelve page description of Columbia Glacier and also describes the towns and cities visited. "Valdez represents the tragedy of mining towns. It is really a dead mining town & it is a real tragedy to walk through and see the great number of vacant houses. Really it is hard to understand the lure of such a place." "Anchorage was created as an operating base for the construction of the railroad and has large permanent railroad yards & shops. It is the youngest and most up to date town in Alaska. For the tourist however it has little of interest." "Fairbanks a town almost exclusively of log cabins. the city is isolated because of its great distance from anywhere and people of the States do not care to spend so much time in traveling to reach the place." <br /> books

The text page gives a description and name of all the parts of the Vickers machine gun. Each part is numbered in the text and on the drawing of the machine gun in the first double page drawing on the next page and following single page drawing. The remaining pages are organized as plates I-VIII. Every part illustrated has each component of the part labeled in French. Any person can use this manuscript to know each and every part of the gun to the point that they could disassemble and assemble it without error. This a most detailed and extensive drawing of the Vickers machine gun a most reliable weapon used by the British army from 1912 during the first World War and continued in use until 1968. <br/><br/>The Vickers machine gun or Vickers gun is a name primarily used to refer to the water-cooled .303 British 7.7 mm machine gun produced by Vickers Limited originally for the British ArmyÂ… It was in service from before the First World War until the 1960s with air-cooled versions of it on many Allied World War I fighter aircraft.The weapon had a reputation for great solidity and reliability. Ian V. Hogg in Weapons & War Machines describes an action that took place in August 1916 during which the British Army's 100th Company of the Machine Gun Corps fired their ten Vickers guns continuously for twelve hours. Using 100 new barrels they fired a million rounds without a single failure. Bound in contemporary French half basane over marbled boards a little worn but suitable for exhibition and study. Highly curious Sammelband of five "Ana" an important genre of late-18th and early 19th century French literature today little known and under-appreciated by academics. At that time EVERYONE read Ana even the critics who excoriated these fugitive pieces of literary ephemera while secretly delighting in their unabashed "bad taste." Concerning Ana Mornet correctly states: "One misunderstands the history of French thought in the 18th-century if one confines it to the history of strictly literary genres . In the provinces especially far from the theater the opera and the fashionable salons when one ceases to be ignorant and indifferent." Mornet judges that the genre of Ana is particularly responsible for assembling useless fragments of knowledge without a greater plan. He qualifies Ana as "crumbs of science" "empty and puerile curiosities" "and chatter." Modern academics ignore Ana at their peril. Once ubiquitous many of them are now very scarce as they were read and reread by audiences all over French and soon discarded. Ana serve to inform us about French language and culture high and low in the broadest possible way.
