A first-person narrative ostensibly by an anonymous young woman recounting her ambitions and achievements following the loss of one leg in early childhood and the consequent physical and social restrictions imposed on her. Presented as nonfiction and received as such by contemporary reviewers with the publisher responding to one enthusiastic contemporary reader: "Our contract with the author especially provides that we are not to reveal the identity and we cannot give the names of any other books by this author without violating our agreement." "Travel" Jan. 1913. <br /> <br />Another memoirist however in her own account of life with a similar disability wrote: "The book proved to be the bastard brain child of a big and bouncing and very jolly New York businessman and writer. He does use crutches having a pair of unreliable knees . but he is definitely not a fascinating little feminine hopper. Although he admits openly to a new legitimate book every year or so he never confesses his paternity to THE GIRL WITH THE ROSEWOOD CRUTCHES that poor love child of his careless youth." Fighting to make her way in New York 'Kate' endures an interview with a newspaperman who thinks her only fit for desk work: "'I have used them crutches for fifteen years' I told him letting him know how clearly I read his prejudices. 'They are no handicap to me. For the life of me I cannot see how they would affect my ability to work upon a newspaper.'" Second Improved Edition; First Edition. Two works bound as one. The first consists of a general guide to making all kinds of vinegars from different sources and for differing purposes. Domestic and commercial production of these useful ferments are discussed including unusual applications e.g. as perfume bases. The second part is a complement to the first item in that the author discusses the production of various sources for initiating fermentation especially those utilized in alcoholic distillation. Overall age-toning and some stains. The last four pages of advertisements of the second item removed at binding. In contemporary paste paper boards. Worn at extremities paper spine label partially worn away. Good or a bit better. A small attractive nineteenth century ownership stamp on a blank portion of the title page of the first item. Neat ownership signature to front fly "Ex Libris m. Schmitt". Additional pencil ownership inscription to front paste down locating the book in Harrisburg Penn. A fabulous collection of images it documented a 19th-century trip to Moscow of an American traveller. All but one of the photographs featured images of landmarks and views of the city mostly centered around the Kremlin including the Big Bell Tsar Bell the Monument to Minin and Pozharsky the Novodevichii Convent the Triumphal Arch of Moscow several different views of the Kremlin etc. A few of them also showed random people including a peasant with a small stand selling an unidentifiable product and a horse-drawn cart along the Moskva River. s. n. unknown books

The album was prepared for and presented to the Vice President of the French Weightlifting Federation Jean Dame in commemoration of the 9th World Festival of Youth and Students "For Solidarity Peace and Friendship" which was held in Bulgaria in July and August of 1968. The festival attracted over 20 000 people from 138 countries. Les Quinze Joyes de Mariage The 15 Joys of Marriage is an anonymous late fourteenth- or early fifteenth-century French satire in prose that presents a picture full of sharpness and humor on the deceits and conflicts that afflict the married state. The misogynist satire is allied to a pitiless analysis of the blindness of husbands in everyday concrete situations. The author remains anonymous in spite of the eight lines of octosyllables placed at the end of the text that contain the name of the author. The riddle has held its secret until today but several names have been proposed most often Antoine de la Sale 1385-1460. Henry Lemarie 1911-1991 a French illustrator from Tours is the most famous French miniaturist of the twentieth century; his work is highly sought after by bibliophiles. Lemarie studied classical literature under the Jesuits then from 1930 to 1936 studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Ad 1 priapus: 300 x 250 mm frame size 198 x 140 mm visible 147 x 93 mm size of illumination. Ad 2 she-devil: 306 x 231 mm frame size 205 x 140 mm visible 150 x 83 mm size of illumination. Sold as a pair. Two weird erotic Indian illuminations the likes of which we have never before encountered and are unlikely to encounter again. <br/><br/>Popular in Roman decorative art the winged priapus is uncommon in Indian iconography. Our illumination is of particularly high quality and depicts a beautiful Indian woman riding a reined priapus perhas twice her size. The priapus is depicted with avain feet and giant wings. The environment is like a strange dream: in the foreground a grey pool with pink flowers; behind are dark green hills with eerie trees and vegetation. In the sky at sunset are what appear to be rain clouds touched in white. We have been unable to transcribe the text but there is writing on the verso. <br/><br/>The second illumination depicts a grotesque she-devil with fangs horns and a long tongue naked save for pearls around her wrists ankles and biceps. Above her waist her speckled skin is light purple and below dark green. The monster clutches to a strange tree on which four priapus grow and with it engages in sexual relations. She reaches toward a basket of several other priapus which are positioned on an upper branch. As with the accompanying illumination in the foreground we find a watery pool and pink flowers and dark green hills studded by surreal trees. The setting is at twilight. <br/><br/>HIGHLY CURIOUS AND MUST BE SEEN TO BE FULLY APPRECIATED. unknown books

Expertly rebacked to match original cloth a bit faded along extremities; frontispiece heavily foxed recent bookseller label to front pastedown else Very Good and sound. Errata slip bound in rear. With numerous contemporary holograph corrections throughout most likely made in preparation of the second edition as many are of a semantic rather than purely factual nature for example on p. 12 lines 2 and 3 from the bottom the text reads: ".figures of the poverty-stricken music-professors of Heilbronn haunted their imaginations". A second edition was published by the London firm of C. & H. Senior in 1840 published under the authorship of a John Sayer and revised by "a lady intimately acquainted for a long period with the circumstances of Mr. Eulenstein's life by whom a few additional facts have been supplied." Whether the annotations in this copy are in Sayer's Welsh's Senior's or the lady's hand is unclear. Traces of a contemporary inscription on original pastedown now obscured by new pastedown would potentially reveal the original owner. Short biographical sketch of the popular German musician Charles or Carl/Karl Eulenstein 1802-1890 whose performances gained him celebrity in Great Britain in the late 1820s and whose preferred instrument the Jews' harp Eulenstein also played the guitar is described on p. 1 as both "eminently beautiful" and in a quotation in a footnote more dissonant than "the creaking of hinges or the mewing of cats." Etymologically the Jews' Harp is not in fact a Jewish musical tradition but a corruption of "Jaw's Harp" one of the oldest known musical instruments dating as far back in China as the 4th century B.C. OCLC locates 11 copies as of April 2015 only 4 outside the United Kingdom Iowa Newberry Texas and Western U. Ontario. James J. Welsh unknown books
