12315Anonymous MIDNIGHT COCKTAIL. Drawing pencil on paper not dated but circa 1983. Signed and titled in pencil the signature is a forgery. 17 1/2 x 14 inches 445 x 356 mm. In excellent condition. Though identified only with the title this is certainly a portrait of the Italian-American singer/songwriter Gazebo Paul Mazzolini on whose 1983 album "Gazebo" also known in its later re-issues as "I Like Chopin" his song "Midnight Cocktail" is featured. Photos of Gazebo from this period show him in tuxedo and bowtie. We see only the mouth and neck of the subject drawn with a line remininscent of Matisse the tuxedo jacket and a buttoniere are also done with a simple line while in contrast the bowtie is a complex and detailed mass of skillful crosshatching which reveal themselves to be the webbed claws of a nocturnal bat.The Hirschfeld Foundation has advised us that this drawing is not by Al Hirschfeld. It is nevertheless a very good drawing indeed. unknown

191025010Prague: Druk H. Mercy 1910. 8vo107 pp stab-stapled and glue bound into violet printed wraps. Front and back panels of wraps detached but present with the paper covering the spine mostly perished. Marginal annotations in pencil throughout. The second edition of this privately published and circulated utopian proposal to create an organized intelligentsia and foster human creativity against capitalism. Published around Whitsun in Prague it includes reactions from readers who had received the first version of the text. A third publicly published edition would follow later this same year. The work was written by Viktor Hueber a former Austrian captain who became a member of the circle which published the short-lived magazine Der Anfang in which Benjamin published his first poems and essays. Hueber was later associated with Franz Pfemfert's better known periodical Die Aktion and early issues of the magazine bore the subtitle "Publikationsorgan der Organization der Intelligenz" a reference to this work though subsequent efforts to create an actual organization based on the book's principles failed due to infighting Portner p. 140. Benjamin discusses the book in a September 15 1913 letter to Carla Seligsohn the first person he'd met who had also read the book. "Those of us who understand Hueber feel our youth complete only in the presence of his ideas- the others who feel noth- ing are not young. They have simply never been young. They took pleasure in their youth only when it was over just a memory. They did not know the great joy of its presence which we are now feeling and which I sense in your words . But in every individual who is born no matter where and turns out to be young there is not 'improvement' but perfection from the very start. This is the goal that Heuber so messianically feels is near . " McCole analyzing this same letter notes that this appears to be Benjamin's first use of the term "Messianic" in his writings McCole p. 61. The idea would haunt Benjamin's subsequent works on history and reach its conclusion in the second thesis in On the Concept of History written just before his march into the mountains. "The past carries with it a secret index by which it is referred to its resurrection. There is an agreement and an appointment between us and the generations of the past. For we have been expected upon this earth. Like the generations before us we have been given a weak messianic power which the past can lay claim to. This claim is not to be settled lightly. The historical materialist knows why." Rare. OCLC locates only two holdings and none in North America. The preceding edition is not located in OCLC.

Druk H. Mercy paperback books

1920719791920. Fine. 1920 11.50 x 18.30 cm autre Album of five Chinese erotic prints mounted on cardboard anonymous. Accordion binding which can be completely unfolded to display all five prints. Very thick cardboard imitating the rigidity of wood the paper prints have been pasted onto the cardboard. Covered on the upper and lower boards with silk fabric with brown motifs. Old ochre label with manuscript title in India ink. Upper board darkened at top over 1cm. Red ink offsetting over a few millimeters at the top of the prints. Rubbing on some prints with color loss. The five paintings depict five couples four of which are coupling in richly furnished decorative settings. The palette uses numerous colors. Chinese erotic art and its conventions are very different from Japanese Shunga and remain poorly understood. There is more naivety and less lubricity. The staging is more frontal the viewpoint distant the sexuality often more extensive and the action takes place outdoors in nature or in furnished interiors. The colors are more vivid and diverse. The date of 1920 is only a suggestion that seems coherent to us. This type of collection usually remained anonymous due to censorship; it was often given as a wedding gift or intended for foreign visitors at that time. hardcover
1890719781890. Fine. 1890 12 x 18 cm autre Album of five Japanese erotic prints mounted on cardboard anonymous. Accordion binding which can be fully unfolded to display all five paintings. Very thick cardboard imitating the rigidity of wood the prints on paper have been mounted on cardboard. Covered on the upper and lower boards with yellow patterned silk fabric. Old ochre label with manuscript title in India ink. Spotting on the prints The five prints depict five couples in action in close-up shots most without furniture or other décor in the manner of Kuniyoshi for example. The palette uses green yellow red and blue. The whole is printed in line in a rather mannered way the limbs languid in delicate expressions. The ensemble follows the canons of shunga representation Japanese erotic prints with happy and fulfilled characters with particularly exposed genitals the male member always turgid and large. The kimonos offer contrasts of colors and patterns geometric flowers or leaves. The date of 1890 is only a suggestion the album may be later around 1920. This type of collection remained anonymous most of the time due to censorship it was often given as a wedding gift or intended for foreign visitors at that time. At the beginning of the Meiji era the attraction for erotic photography supplanted shunga. Some painters specialized in the production of shunga and it is not uncommon to encounter the same scenes in various collections. hardcover

A scarce collection of biographical sketches of seventy-one British public figures with a fold-out frontiepiece with thirty portraits. First edition. Missed by Cowie this is the earliest appearance of a Nelson biographical reference. "In every point of view we are warranted in concluding that Lord Nelson has rendered a most important service to humanity by his late and decisive victory. If the hostile cabinets of Europe should prudently avail themselves of its impression upon the enemy. an honourable and glorious peace may be the happy result." He takes pride of place as the first character in the folding frontis probably because of his recent victory at Aboukir referred to above. Some of the other notables include Lord Nelson Mr Fox Dr. Darwin Lord Monboddo Isaac D'Israeli Mrs. Siddons William Herschel and Joseph Priestley. It was very popular and was reprinted many times forming the first in a series of these types of works. Very good internally but in need of rebacking for the original full calf binding.
