17207070Amsterdam 1720. Copper engraving 30 x 23.5 cms black and white elaborate engraved border Dutch text beneath; generous margins blank verso. A Dutch fools cap map satirising the bursting of the financial bubbles of 1720. Cartographic features are given punning names such as the River Bubble the Island of Despair and the town of Madmandam but the real Rivers Thames Seine and Meuse are also marked drawing attention to the scenes of the greatest folly. In Britain the South Sea Company folded wiping out inumberable fortunes after a period of intesnse speculation. In France colourful Scottish financier John Law won the confidence of the Duke of Orleans then Regent of France and was permitted to set up the Mississippi Company which controlled all trade with Frances vast and largely unexplored American possessions - believed to be rich in gold and silver. He established the Royal Bank and issued paper money based on the supposed value of shares in the company. Eventually he was minting French coinage collecting taxes and largely controlling the French economy. The value of the shares soared the French economy boomed more paper notes were issued and after a period of wild speculation confidence collapsed ruining investors throughout Europe. The imaginary mad-head island depicted by the engraver in a sea of shares and inhabited by shareholders discovered by Mr Law-rens has an asss ears and wears a fools cap. The cartouche shows angry investors storming the offices of John Laws company and an equally ludicrous land-ship sailing towards a lunatic asylum. The insets flanking the title depict individual investors ruined by their greed. Map unknown

74163No place no date 1608. Small 4to 18.0 x 14.6 cm. Engraved title page; five pp. 19th-century marbled wrappers. = A very rare pamphlet in which the anonymous author questions a truce between the Netherlands and Spain. "The Twelve Years' Truce was the name given to the cessation of hostilities between the Habsburg rulers of Spain and the Southern Netherlands and the Dutch Republic as agreed in Antwerp on 9 April 1609 coinciding with the Royal Decree of Expulsion of the Moriscos. It was a watershed in the Eighty Years' War marking the point from which the independence of the United Provinces received formal recognition by outside powers. For Spain the truce was seen as a humiliating defeat as they were forced to make several sacrifices but they scarcely got anything in return" Wikipedia. The engraving shows the Dutch and Spanish engaged in some kind of ritual battle on a beach with shells along the tide line and dunes in the background. According to Tiele the truce was: "een van de aardigst geschrevene blaauwboekjes tegen den vrede" one of the most pleasantly written pamphlets against peace. Paper trimmed to plate edges some light mostly marginal staining small chip to last leaf lower outer corner otherwise very good. Knuttel 1466; Muller 1254b; Tiele 676. unknown

016437Artiste anonyme, Iran, portrait présumé du prince Nassereddine Shah (1831-1896). Aquarelle et crayon, ca.1850, sur papier (18.5*12.5cm). L'aquarelle mesure 12.5*6cm. Beau document. [370]

Francesco Melzi Da Vinci's student compiled the text from his master's notebooks. He titled it Trattato della pittura and is now known as the Codex Urbinas 1270. The manuscript remained unpublished until 1651 when an Italian and a French edition appeared simultaneously at Giacomo Langlois Paris. This was accompanied with illustrations by Nicolas Poussin including a reproduction of the Mona Lisa and a portrait of Da Vinci. Most plates depict instructive models to learn the different disciplines of painting. The second French edition was published in 1716 in octavo titled Traité de la Peinture par Léonard de Vinci. This was illustrated with new plates copied after those in de first edition. The present third French edition has the exact same illustrations as the second edition indicating that the copper plates from the second edition were reused. The text of the present third edition is enlarged with a biography of Da Vinci in the preliminaries. According to the anonymous editor the text follows that of the first edition closer than the second edition did.

Condition: faded stain in the first and last part otherwise in good condition wholly untrimmed.

Reference: Brunet V 1258 dated 1798; Steinitz L. da Vinci's Trattato della Pittura A Bibliography pp. 157-158.
Deterville, printed by Crapelet
