Gilt-tooled title in second compartment; gilt-tooled decoration on wide raised bands and blind-tooled decoration on remaining compartments. Triple gilt-ruled borders with elaborate blind-tooled borders within on both boards. Gilt-rolled edges and turn-ins. All page edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Emma Roberts 1794-1840 was an English travel writer and poet who lived in India for several years. Her text accompanies the beautiful engravings based on drawings by Commander Robert James Elliot who travelled from 1822 to 1824 in India Canton Guangzhou and the Red Sea area. Inscription on front free endpaper verso indicating that the book was given by Samuel Fennell on his engagement to Anabella Groom about 1837; she was the granddaughter of Hannah Lightfoot; later Anabella gave it to her friend Henry Plumptre Ramsden "lest it should in her own words fall into unworthy hands"; she died in 1882 and was buried in Trumpington Churchyard near Cambridge. The Rev. Henry Plumptre Ramsden 1848-1901 was the rector at Cottingham Yorkshire Eng. In Very Good Condition: edges somewhat rubbed; front board partially detached; occasional foxing generally light and in margins of plates; otherwise clean and bright. 1783002406London: T. Cadell 1783. Hardcover. Near Fine. 6 x 1 xiv-xvi 255 1 p.; 22 cm. 20th-century binding: half polished calf with gilt-tooled spine title "Osborn on Parturition." Black cloth over boards. Lacking original half title which was supplied probably at the time of the modern binding by a facsimile of a half title bearing an inscription. Title page bears two circular stamps of the Norwich & Norfolk United Medical Book Society and "ANd43" in ink in the upper corner. The Norwich & Norfolk United Medical Book Society was founded prior to 1826 when a catalog of its library was published. The library was dispersed some time after 1955. In the Conclusion p. 241-255 Osborn disagrees vehemently with Alexander Hamilton's remarks on Caesarian operations in his Outlines of the Theory and Practice of Midwifery. Hamilton declared that the mother had only a one in ten chance of dying as the result of a Caesarian operation while Osborn insisted that the odds were precisely the opposite only one in ten of survival. Half title supplied as noted above; otherwise in Near Fine Condition: front endpapers slightly discolored; upper corner of back board slightly rubbed; pages are clean and bright. T. Cadell hardcover

A charming tribute with subtle overtures from three Swedish bachelors living in Mexico to three California sisters whose hunting prowess was described in an article in the "Mexican Herald." Headlined "Three California Dianas. They Kill Bears and Panthers and Olive in Particular is an Expert Shot" the article describes the sisters who live in the "wilderness above Ukiah California" as "sportswomen of rare talent" and gives an account of their encounter with a bear which ends up with their treeing and killing the animal. The letter reads in part: ".we think it would interest you to know that your bravery and pluck are known even outside your own Country . We have read and reread the article and . we could not restrain ourselves from sending our respects. Down here you would find a great field for your guns. We have all kinds of big game . it is nothing unusual to meet an 8 or 9 feet sic tiger on the roads when we are out riding. We will described one of our hunting experiences that might interest you." The letter goes on to relate how after wounding and trailing a deer towards a lagoon "a big Puma jumped out from the jungle and pounced upon our poor wounded deer. A rifleshot and we had both deer and Puma." The letter continues: "We are three Swedes 26 28 & 31 years old and run a fruit plantation in partnership in the district of Huasteca on the shores of the beautiful Panuco river. We have been here only 5 months but we have found the prospects for the future very bright. We would greatly enjoy a few lines from you as to ascertain whether our epistle ever reached you . and if the article is a ghost-story or not." Some marginal damage; excellent. In the early 20th century in order to appease increasing anti-Japanese sentiment in California without offending the growing world power the US and Japan reached an informal agreement: the US would not restrict the activities of Japanese immigrants already in the country and Japan would stop allowing laborers to emigrate to the US. However the agreement also allowed Japanese men living in the US to bring over their families. At the time most counties on the US’s west coast where most Japanese immigrants lived were home to significantly more Japanese men than women. This led to the practice of “picture bridesâ€: arranged marriages between Japanese men in America and women back in Japan who would only see each other via photographs prior to their marriage. The men would send along some information about their lives in the States—often exaggerated or untrue—which the women’s families would use to decide on the marriage; the couple would be married without the groom present and then the bride would travel to the US where they would meet for the first time.1 Offered here is a photograph of a group of “picture brides†arriving in San Francisco around 1915. Very good contrast; some photos with much marginal damage and chipping; overall very good. Fourteen photographs of men and women at work in an unnamed shoe factory dated 1905–1910. Most have captions at least naming the task that the workers are engaged in mainly heeling though some have more descriptive captions; one describes how the heeling machine works and another identifies the leather the workers were using a shark skin. By this point shoe manufacturing was well past its traditional handicraft days; shoes had been manufactured almost exclusively using machines since the late 19th century. Of interest to scholars of manufacturing history. unknown

Three volumes. <br/> Contemporary half calf over brown marbled boards raised bands with gilt tooling spine panels blind-stamped in a scolloped pattern red morocco label marbled endpapers and edges. Front pastedown with the bookplate of the celebrated book-collector Frances Mary Richardson Currer of Eshton Hall in each volume. Provenance: Dibdin "Reminiscences of a Literary Life" 1836 pp. 949–57; De Ricci "English Collectors of Books and Manuscripts" 1930 pp. 141-43. Extremities a bit rubbed boards lightly chafed occasional minor marginal stains or light patches of foxing but a pleasing copy generally clean and fresh in sturdy original bindings with no significant condition issues.<br/> <br/> This novel of the British navy during the Jacobite Rebellion comes from the library of a woman described by De Ricci as "England’s earliest female bibliophile" and hailed by Dibdin as "the head of all female collectors in Europe." An only child Frances Mary Richardson Currer 1785-1861 inherited considerable assets from both her father's and her mother's families: her relative Dorothy Richardson wrote in 1815 "She is in possession of both the Richardson and Currer estates and inherits all the taste of the former family having collected a very large and valuable library and also possessing a fine collection of prints shells and fossils in addition to what were collected by her great grandfather and great-uncle." Dibdin noted that her library at Eshton Hall was "surpassed only by those of Earl Spencer the duke of Devonshire and the duke of Buckingham." According to DNB "the library had substantial holdings in natural science topography antiquities and history together with a collection of the classics. There were rarities some early printed books a collection of Bibles and a fine gathering of illustrated books. . . . Dibdin first estimated the number of volumes at 15000 and later 18000. In 1852 Sir J. B. Burke put the number at 20000." Although best known for his Leatherstocking Tales set on the early American frontier James Fenimore Cooper 1789-1851 had originally intended a career in the navy and spent several years at sea before an inheritance from his father allowed him to pursue a literary career. Deemed by Day "an excellent naval novel" the text here is a poignant tale of conflicting loyalties and the importance of friendship seen through the eyes of the titular "Two Admirals" lifelong friends supporting opposing political forces in the contest over the Stuart succession to throne of Britain. Jacob Zallel Lauterbach (18731942) was an American Judaica scholar and author who served on the faculty of Hebrew Union College and composed responsa for the Reform movement in America. He specialized in Midrashic and Talmudical literature, and is best known for his landmark critical edition and English translation of the Mekilta de-Rabbi Ishmael. (Wikipeida, 2016) The 1927 responsum of Rabbi Jacob Zallel Lauterbach permitted birth control. Jacob urges limitation of contraception because of the Jewish population crisis He believes that women should be included in the commandment to procreate but does not approve of their exclusion from education and professional careers. (Jewish Womens Archive) Lauterbachs article was published two years before Ernst Gräfenbergs IUD, and became more widely cited in Jewish Literature after oral contraceptives were made available in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. David Paul Drach (1791 - 1868) was a Catholic convert from Judaism, and librarian of the College of Propaganda in Rome. Drach received his first instruction at the hands of his father, a renowned Hebraist and Talmudic scholar... (He) was married to Sara Deutz in Oberwesel, Germany. Sara Deutz was the daughter of Rabbi Emanuel Deutz, chief Rabbi of Paris. Having obtained the rather unwilling permission of his father, in 1812 he went to Paris, where he received a call to a prominent position in the Central Jewish Consistory and at the same time fulfilled the duties of tutor for the children of Baruch Weil On Maundy Thursday, 1823, he renounced Judaism in the presence of Archbishop Quélen His wife, the only member of the family who remained Jewish, is reported by the Catholic Encyclopedia to have abducted the children. Drachs work on Divorce in the Synagogue is bound together with a 1790 1st edition copy of Agreement of Revlation and Reason which is a widely cited Catholic discussion on the laws and customs of divorce published just following the French Revolution.
