1863List1004New Hampshire: Printer Unknown 1863. First Edition. Printed broadside 16 ½ x 11 ½ inches archivally mounted and matted. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper margin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Franklin Pierce remained politically active upon his return to New Hampshire following his presidency advocating for the Democratic cause and generally opposing the Civil War and Lincoln's policies. This scarce pro-Union anti-slavery broadside printed for the 1863 New Hampshire elections which happened March 12 takes aim at Pierce and his fellow Democrats repeating the unfounded claim first made in 1862 by William Seward that Pierce belonged to the secret Knights of the Golden Circle the secret society formed with the goal of forming a new territory out of the CSA Mexico Central America and the Caribbean. There was never evidence that Pierce had any involvement in the KGC though the society had members in southern parts of some Union states such as Indiana Ohio Illinois and Missouri.<br /> <br /> The broadside printed for the March 12 elections quotes heavily from Pierce as well as the other Democrat candidates and party officials who were either running for office in New Hampshire or involved in politics a group which included Ira Eastman John Goerge Josiah Minot Thomas Treadwell Daniel Marcy William Burns and George Stevens. The broadside includes an engraving of coiled snakes each with these politicians named and the caption "et id omne genus." Eastman the Democratic candidate for governor won the popular vote but lacked the constitutional majority necessary for election. Marcy was successful in his bid for the First District. "Men of New Hampshire!" the broadside asks: "Will you Vote the Ticket Made up by Such Men" with the final line imploring to "Please paste up in a Conspicuous Place." <br /> <br /> Overall an uncommon survival from the 1863 elections. A very good copy with some light toning small closed tear at upper magin light foxing at upper margin very tiny spot of loss to illustration at fold. Quite scarce with OCLC locating two copies only at the Huntington Library and the New York Historical Society. Printer Unknown unknown books

19182322Various locations in Texas 1918. Very good. Fifteen leaves illustrated with fifty-five mounted photographs and a few ephemeral clippings identifying locations. Oblong octavo. Contemporary black cloth string-tied. Light soiling to covers. Minor wear to some photographs but overall a handsome selection. A unique collection of vernacular photographs collected by a soldier in the 8th U.S. Cavalry identified simply as D. Watson serving in southwest Texas during the Mexican Border War. The first two pictures emanate from Quartermaster Training Camp in Jacksonville Florida. This is followed by one photo from Barron Field in Everman Texas. The remaining photographs document Watson's time in Ruidosa Texas an unincorporated Texas-Mexico border town in Presidio County about a hundred miles from Terlingua. Here Watson includes photographs of himself and other soldiers and their horses posed in front of old stone structures in orange groves amongst canyons in front of an automobile and more with images of Mexican adobes a wagon advertising an "electric light company" the cavalry preparing their horses scenes of the wilds of southwest Texas and the E.H. Carlton company store. E.H. Carlton was also a principal in the Carlton Van Loan Company an oil speculation firm active in the 1920s. 1864WRCAM56141Petersburg Va 1864. Pencil sketch 10 x 14 1/4 inches. One vertical and two horizontal folds. Residue from previous mounting and old repair to verso minute separation at two cross- folds. Lightly tanned. Very good. A large and well-executed pencil sketch of a field hospital toward the end of the Civil War. The artist only identified him- or herself as "W.M.C." in the lower left corner along with the caption: "Field Hospital of the 3rd Div. 6th Corps near Petersburg Va. Pencil Sketch made 1864." In the foreground are the well-tended grounds of the hospital including a flagpole flying the hospital "H" flag with the Greek cross insignia of the VI Corps all surrounded by a wooden fence and trimmed hedge. A complex of semi-permanent tents dominates the majority of the image with two men in uniform in conversation to the left of the tents. In the background are two covered ambulance wagons decorated with medical crosses; trees and small houses are visible further in the background. <br> <br> The VI Army Corps was created in 1862 and assigned to the Army of the Potomac although in 1864 it was temporarily assigned to the Army of the Shenandoah under the command of Maj. Gen. James B. Ricketts. Although the VI Corps faced heavy fighting throughout the Civil War 1864 was particularly violent - this field hospital was undoubtedly packed throughout the year. In the wake of the Battles of the Wilderness and Spotsylvania during the Overland Campaign to the close fighting near Mule Shoe also known as the "Bloody Angle" the assault at Cold Harbor and the Shenandoah Valley campaigns the VI Corps saw nearly two-thirds of its 24000 soldiers killed or wounded. In December 1864 the VI Corps returned to the Army of the Potomac and in April 1865 played an important role in the final assault on the fortifications of Petersburg. unknown books

1938114232Tokyo: Nakatogawa Hiroyuki March 20 1938. First edition of this uncommon Japanese propaganda piece recording the opening campaigns of the Japanese in the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japan's failure to defeat China in this war became the key dynamic for what happened in Asia during the Second World War. In his award-winning study of the conflict - China's War with Japan 1937-1945: The Struggle for Survival 2013 - Rana Mitter Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the Institute for Chinese Studies at Oxford opens his prologue by saying "In the spring of 1939 Europe was still albeit uneasily at peace. But some seven thousand kilometres to the east the Second World War was already well under way". Just three copies on WorldCat Manchukuo collection in the Harvard-Yenching Library Stanford and Princeton. Following Japan's successes in the First Sino-Japanese War 1894-5 tensions had intensified seeming to peak with the conquest of Manchuria in 1931 and the creation of the puppet state of Manchukuo but continuing to rise steadily through the 30s. After a number of provocations in the summer of 1937. Chiang Kai-shek's nationalist forces joined with the warlords of Hunan and Szechwan provinces to fight the Japanese. Chiang believed that by attacking Japanese naval installations and troops in and around Shanghai he would force the foreign powers to ally with China to fight against Japan to protect their considerable investments in southern China. For three months the Nationalist Chinese armies held out in the face of an intense bombardment by Japan's Taiwan-based 'planes and ships on the Huangpu River but were eventually forced to retreat to Nanking under constant harrying attacks from Japanese reinforcements. The images in this "souvenir" album show the Japanese advance through Eastern and Coastal China; the build up of materiel; the destruction of Nanking; Japanese troops on the march celebrating victories; the aftermath of the destructive bombardments. Landscape quarto. Illustrated title on yellow-tinted paper 7 colour plates numerous illustrations from photographs some on tinted paper stock all leaves with tissue guards folding colour map pictorial endpapers. Original dark red textured paper-covered boards green silk ties die-cut image of the Great Wall to the front board together with title gilt to the front board. 186533225New York: Kimmel & Forster 1865. Lithograph. Approximately 21" X 26. Very good. Lightly evenly age toned; blank margins either trimmed or edgeworn for the cream mat goes to the image edge at the top and sides while the bottom includes the full title line mat opening 23" X 18¼". First edition. Magnificent allegorical lithograph issued by the famed New York print publisher who also produced a companion piece entitled "The End of the Rebellion in the United States 1865." A large figure of Columbia stands at center atop a huge splitting rock looking to the viewer's right and clutching a waving flag in her right hand; meanwhile her other hand wags a pointing finger toward the viewer's left side. At her feet lie a whip and open shackles representing the abolition of slavery. To the viewer's right stands Abraham Lincoln and indeed the entire right side represents the Republican cause. A stern General Winfield Scott stand behind Lincoln and a crowd of young men strain forward some offering up bags of gold some bearing arms all willing to join the cause; a woman in the foreground covers her eyes and is comforted by two children. The background on this side is horizon of mountains and a glorious sunrise. On Columbia's other side stands the figure of Justice without her usual blindfold raising up her scales in one hand and sword in the other glaring angrily toward all those at the left side of this hectic scene. James Buchanan's sleeps blissfully at the edge of the split rock while next to him crouches his secretary of war John B. Floyd -- who was charged with corruption -- eagerly scooping up gold coins into a large sack. Further back Jefferson Davis clutching a ripped U.S. flag and Alexander H. Stephens stand beside a palm tree with a huge snake coiling up its length and spitting at the scales of justice. An angry cluster of soldiers swirls around them. The background on this side is grim and muted with battle scenes. A superb handsome example of this famous Civil War allegorical print. Kimmel & Forster unknown
6252EDWARD ALLEN GOODWIN unknown-1862. Goodwin was the Sergeant in Company K of the 23rd Regular Massachusetts Volunteers. This is the diary of Edward A. Goodwin Co. K 23rd Regt. M. of. M. This diary is THE AMERICAN UNION DIARY FOR 1862 an annual published diary accessible and likely provided to Union soldiers during the Civil War. After a few pages that include a calendar and interest tables the diary provides space for each day of the year 1862. Goodwin wrote entries every day from January 1st to April 7th and none thereafter. At the time Goodwin was serving in the 23rd Massachusetts Infantry Regiment which was a part of the Coast Division under General Ambrose Burnside. Entries are handwritten in either pencil or black ink. Notable entries include: aFriday 7: Naval engagementplace lasting from noon till sunset. Troops were landedin the afternoon and evening. Bivouacked on Roanoke Island in the rain. b Saturday 8: Captured a rebel battery in a swamp. Took 3000 rebel provisions and the whole island wasSergt. Howard hurt his foot. W.S. Clark missing. Both entries describe the Battle of Roanoke Island fought February 7th and 8th 1862. Part of General Ambrose Burnsides expedition to capture key ports in the Outer Banks the battle first saw Union gunboats first firing on Confederate forts under the command of Henry Wise until Burnsides soldiers could land ashore unopposed. and the forts on shore engaged in a gun battle with occasional contributions from the Mosquito Fleet. The next day the Union soldiers successfully flanked the Confederate artillery and infantry defenders on both sides forcing a retreat into the Confederate forts. The forts were then individually taken with the Union suffering only 264 casualties and capturing 2500 Confederate defenders. c Friday 14: Fought the battle of New Bern. Took over 100 pieces of artillery ammunitioncamp equipment &c. I arrived at night in the tents of the enemy. This entry describes the Battle of New Bern fought on March 14th 1862. After first advancing up the Trent River General Burnside had his soldiers exploit the weakened center of the line of the defending Confederates under Lawrence O'B. Branch. This allowed the Union Navy to shell Fort Thompson forcing its abandonment and shortly thereafter the city of New Bern too. 90 Union soldiers were killed and 64 Confederates were killed and 413 were captured. d Monday 31: Sick all day. Took horses.e Monday 7: Saw Amoat the hospital. DeceasedRain in the afternoon. These two entries foreshadow Goodwins ultimate fate including his last entry on April 7th 1862. Goodwin would pass away in New Bern on April 16th. Having survived two major battles unscathed at least according to his diary Goodwin most likely succumbed to disease. It is estimated that 2/3 of Civil War soldiers who died during the war died of disease not in battle. His body was ultimately returned to Massachusetts and is buried in Mansfield. The pages of the journal are in good condition but the exterior of black leather is frayed and partially torn. It should be handled very delicately but its value as a lens into the mindset of a Civil War soldier is immense. hardcover
