Contemporary black lacquered gutta percha covers illustrated in Korean style string tied. Minor wear. Very good. A unique peek into Army life in 1952 memorializing the experiences of African-American soldiers during the Korean War. Here the soldiers pose alone and in groups both inside and outside military tents and other structures in both sunny and snowy conditions engaged in lifting weights driving a tank working around the base general carousing and other activities. One image captures an African-American soldier standing outside the Seoul City Hospital likely indicating the soldiers were based near the city. In addition to the American servicemen the album includes several images featuring Korean women with a couple of images capturing a pair of women singing and dancing onstage for the troops. A few other images picture simple portraits of Korean women including one image showing a young Korean woman posed with one of the soldiers. The album also features a handful of shots of the Korean countryside with one image picturing a nearby village. 16946281London: Josiah Bromley 1694. First Edition. Loose Broadside Framed Under Glass. Good. Original one-sheet broadside roughly trimmed 8-1/8 by 12-4/8 inches. Printed on rag paper with old creases now mellowed and two archival tissue repairs on left margin. Mounted on mat board with mat board overlay. Overlay with edge-wear. Framed under glass. First Lord of the Admiralty Edward Russell 1653 -1727 was a key figure in the Nine Years War notably establishing his reputation at the Battles of Barfleur and La Hougue.
Following a decisive 1693 victory over the French navy near Cape Barfleur the House of Commons determined that Russell had not done enough in dispatching French ships; he was removed from duty. After disasters that befell the British Navy in summer 1693 Russell was reinstated. In early May 1694 he was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty and sailed for the Mediterranean to thwart French depredations against the Spanish coast near Barcelona and Palamos. The engagement documented here likely occurred enroute to the Mediterranean.

With the idiosyncratic spelling and usage common to the era. e.g. "we were buzzed about the ears .". A charming patriotic broadside from reign of William and Mary. Rare. No institutional copies located.
. Josiah Bromley unknown

194114713England 1941. Very Good. Substantial collection of original amateur artwork and fashion plates dated 1941 to 1945 by a young woman named Gladys Warren almost all pieces signed "G. Warren" "G.W." or "Gladys Warren". The collection consists of nine large format watercolors 56x38cm.; one small format watercolor 32.5x23; four large format pencil sketches 56x38cm.; and twelve small format pencil sketches 33.5x19cm. totaling twenty-six 26 individual pieces. Some dust soil and minor wear from handling watercolors not examined out of individual shrink wrap. A Very Good or better collection overall.

Collection of drawings and watercolors almost exclusively depicting women in the latest fashions or in uniform. The range of the large format watercolors indicate that this was possibly a burgeoning professional dossier including examples of day wear sleep wear evening wear and swim wear. The large format pencil drawings include two historic fashion illustrations the only titled image in the group is "Madeira 1884" and one nude study.

Of special note however is the series of twelve small pencil sketches all accomplished on the versos of what appear to be mimeographed World War II aircraft maintenance reports. Indeed the October 28 1941 "London Gazette" lists a Gladys Florence Warren among the members of the Women's Auxiliary Air Force WAAF though we find little else to pinpoint the artist. With the dearth of ready paper experienced during World War II perhaps Warren filched these leaves on which to practice her art Most of these sketches depict attractive women either seen in close-up or as usual modeling the latest uniforms and fashions while the verso details the assemblage or maintenance of engine covers handbrakes or a "carburettor."

A pleasing survival of the English home front juxtaposing fashion femininity and aircraft mechanics. unknown

The Mexican legislature also argues clearly for guerrilla warfare. The work was issued just after the Battle of Cerro Gordo and also printed as a broadside with priority of the two editions unknown.

"Dated April 26 1847 this rare and virtually unknown pamphlet criticizes the way the central government is handling the war. 18564036Mexico City: Imprenta de Ignacio Cumplido 1856. Still very good. 17pp. Original printed wrappers bound into full calf front board gilt lettered. Some toning and scattered light foxing. This law was promulgated at the end of 1856 by the new liberal government of Mexico following its ascendancy in the mid-1850s and preceded the reform Constitution of 1857 by two months. Its statutes defined "crimes against the independence and security of the nation" including various forms of treason rebellion and foreign military service or assistance and made them punishable by death. The law anticipated conservative resistance and revolt against the new policies of the liberal faction that aimed to strip power and influence from the church and traditional aristocracy of the country. Their efforts indeed led to full-scale civil war in 1858 and the second French intervention in the early 1860s. OCLC locates a small handful of institutional copies and we locate just one in available sales records. Scarce and in attractive original wrappers. Imprenta de Ignacio Cumplido unknown

194584546Prokuplje: Prekomurac Printing House October 1945. 40cm x 30cm. Single sheet of newsprint style paper printed recto only with a printer's error to the bottom right corner where the paper has been folded over as it entered the press so a fragment of the text is printed in error to the verso. Some trifling toning to the edges otherwise a very good example indeed and an almost miraculous survival.

Simultaneously a call to action a plea for political support and a memorial to the great deeds of the women of the DobriÄ Province during WW2 distributed by the People's Front Party and the Anti-Fascist Women's Front of what would become the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia;

"Mothers Wives Sisters and the Many Great Sons and Daughters of the Good Men who are Missed!" would be an approximate translation of the sub-heading.

The main body of text printed in cyrillic goes on to list the wartime exploits of these women and less specifically their men; "We will never forget the sacrifice of the women from Dobrich who went day and night summer and winter throught the mountains and valleys of our region and brought our famous partisans clothes food ammuniotion and information. The ferocious occupier and his informants our home-grown traitors knew of these deeds and that is why they persecuted you women in particular. But neither prisons nor beatings nor camps nor shootings nor the burning of your houses truly swayed you from the right path for the good of The People."

The text goes on to detail the immmediate post war collective efforts of these women; caring for the wounded adopting orphaned children and helping with the provincial administration both for the living and the dead. These actions it is maintained strengthened the People's Front to the point where it has become the only clear choice for the future of the region; the women of "Fighting DobriÄ" therefore must ensure their vote in the upcoming elections is cast for the People's Front so as to "elect worthy sons of the people as our representatives in the Constituent Assembly."
The dense and rather understandably enthused broadsheet concludes with the patriotic cheer:

"Long Live The People's Front!
Long Live the First Free Elections in Our Country!
Long Live Women's Rights and Freedoms!
Long Live the Frontline Soldiers of the DobriÄki Section!
Long Live Our Candidates!
Long Live The Anti-Fascist Women's Front of Yugoslavia!"

A courageous and uncompromising piece of antifascist ephemera from a region that was subject to a brutal Wehrmacht campaign assisted by local Chetnik collaborators and the Ustaše forces that was rightfully regarded as genocidal ethnic cleansing in post-war analyses. The Yugoslav Partisans however refused to capitulate and supported by an increasingly decimated local population fought relentlessly until the collapse of the Reich before victoriously proclaiming the foundation of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. No examples of this piece appear in OCLC and no trace can be found of its distribution in the public record. Prekomurac Printing House unknown

1740WRCAM43159London 1740. Engraving with hand-coloring 14 x 8 3/4 inches. Minor soiling. Color quite bright and fresh. Very good. A satire against French Cardinal Fleury Chief Minister to Louis XV published during the frenzy of celebrations over Admiral Vernon's victory over the Spanish at the Battle of Porto Bello - an enthusiasm which the Cardinal apparently did not share. Fleury was an ally of Robert Walpole whose power was in decline and had reluctantly agreed to hostilities with Spain. Fleury is seen here seated reaching out toward a medallion of Admiral Vernon and holding a scroll which reads "His iron will get ye better of my gold" and "G-d he'll take all our acquisitions in America." On the wall behind him are several small crude illustrations one of which appears to be a portly Walpole hanging from a gallows above the slogan "No matter if he is longer than ye gallows." A head sits atop a pole perhaps alluding to the fact that many people would be pleased to see Walpole's head positioned thus. Engraved by George Bickham. Only one copy located in OCLC at Northwestern University. BRITISH LIBRARY CATALOG 2454. OCLC 43946235. unknown books

1863WRCAM45995N.p. but possibly Williamsport Pa 1863. Broadside 10 1/4 x 7 1/2 inches. Minor wear and soiling. One small tear in left margin. Very good plus. A vivid Civil War broadside showing the immediacy of the news from the front as well as how garbled or false information was disseminated. The headlines further trumpet: "It is occupied by the 144th Pa. Vols. - The 'Old Flag' that Anderson was compelled to lower floating on the ruins! - Glorious news from Gens. Meade and Butler! - Contemplated movement on Richmond." Despite resumption of a terrific bombardment of Fort Sumter on October 26 the fort did not fall to Federal forces. Thousands of rounds were dropped on the fort but it stayed in Confederate hands another sixteen months until evacuated on February 13 1865. It certainly was not occupied by the 144th Pennsylvania Volunteers and Major Anderson's "Old Flag" did not fly over the fort until two hours before the death of Abraham Lincoln on April 15 1865. The whole second column of text concerns events in the Western Theater Georgia Tennessee and Alabama and the progress of the Army of the Potomac in Virginia:

".General Meade was on the march for the city of Richmond under circumstances which rendered it almost certain that he would capture it. The report of the evacuation of Richmond.is of course all bosh. The details of the great movement now being executed I am not allowed to telegraph you.the objective point of the combined command is the city of Richmond." unknown books
