1918003479Privately printed. XV CORPS SERGEANTS - Sergeants mess Christmas dinner menu 1918 multi signed Mouvaux: Privately printed 1918 A Christmas day 1918 menu with a black and white staff photograph dated 1919 The Menu: A4 sized piece of woven paper that has been folded in 2 places to create a leaflet on the front has been illustrated by one of the staff a design by hand of the menu and this has been printed complete with the XV Corps emblem on each side of the front cover are illustrations initialled by the same artist also printed; in pencil one of the soldiers has signed his name at the top 'H Broadbridge' and I think it is more likely that he was an attendee at the dinner and the original owner of this menu; on the reverse in the centre is the menu that has been tipped in on either side are the hand signed signatures of attending Sergeants the waiters chef and senior officers there are 27 in total; overall this remarkable survivor is in good to very good condition there are browning marks along the folded lines and a few spotting marks; it is fragile as can be expected; it is nothing short of astonishing that this menu has survived. The photograph: A5 in size and in black and white; on the reverse there is a contemporary inscription that reads "XV Corps W.O Sergeants Mess Mouvaux Nr Tourcoing France January 1919" so this staff photo would have been taken only a week or two after their Christmas feast; it is likely that most if not all of the Sergeants pictured would have been at the dinner; overall in very good condition with some handling marks on the reverse of the photo. A scarce survivor that is somehow still with its accompanying photo of the band of Sergeants that would have attended the Christmas Dinner in 1918 in Mouvaux and signed this menu. On the front of the menu are two wonderful illustrations drawn to signify the end of the war with the ink still yet to dry on the armistice agreement. On one side the illustration shows a Sergeant crouched behind a rock with the caption "The observation post something!!! Xmas 1917" and then on the other is a Sergeant sweetly puffing on his cigarette dreaming of a turkey with the caption "Something good Xmas 1918". A reflection of the mood in the Sergeants mess at that time. XV Corps was formed in April 1916 and was an amalgamation of divisions and specialist companies such as a signals team and a mortar battery unit. Its aim was to support the army in critical battles across the western front where needed. The corps was large in numbers and so had these two dozen sergeants in charge of the men. They would see action in the battle of the Somme Lys Ypres and the final advance in Flanders with many shown in the photo and attending this dinner decorated heroes. A truly remarkable menu and photo from the final moments of the great war signed by the sergeants of XV Corps. . Very Good. Soft cover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1918. Privately printed paperback

Original Wraps. 8vo. 15 pages. 22 cm. First edition. Declaration by Jan Stanczyk on the heroic struggle of the underground movement in Poland (Jewish and Polish) , the vicious eradication of all Polands citizens by the Nazi occupation, and the need to redress previous wrongs committed by the Polish government against its Jewish citizens. Contains six illustrations. A pledge of Jewish equality in a 'post-war democratic Poland freed of the Nazi yoke, ' was given here today by Jan Stanczyk, Polish Minister of Labor and Social Welfare at a press conference preceding his address to the executive committee of the Jewish Labor Committee. Poland will guarantee all her citizens including the Jews full legal equality. This Poland will be a true democracy and every one of her citizens will enjoy equal rights irrespective of race, creed or origin. 1862377695Philadelphia: John Campbell 1862. First Philadelphia edition. 16pp. 8vo. Disbound a bit brittle chip at fore-edge. First Philadelphia edition. 16pp. 8vo. In April 1861 with the Civil War erupting northern troops were rushed to Washington D.C. to protect the capital passing through Baltimore by rail. Although Maryland voted against secession at the end of April pro Southern sentiment abounded in the planter society and the state militia was used to try and prevent northern troops from passing through the state. The following month planter and militia Lieutenant John Merryman was arrested for treason and for advocating "armed hostility against the Government" for his role in destroying railroad bridges in the state being used to transport Union troops. Merryman's lawyers appealed to Justice Roger B. Taney the Supreme Court Justice who infamously decided the Dred Scott case by ruling that those of African ancestry could not claim citizenship in the United States who immediately issued a writ of habeas corpus. Guaranteed by the Suspension Clause of the Constitution habeas corpus protected citizens against unlawful arrests by allowing the court to bring prisoner's before the bench to determine whether their detention was indeed lawful.

General George Cadwalader the commander of the military district including Fort McHenry where Merryman was being held prisoner refused to abide with Taney's decision citing Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus. On May 28 in the present decision Taney stated from the bench in ex parte John Merryman that the President can neither suspend habeas corpus nor authorize a military officer to do it and that military officers cannot arrest a person not subject to the rules and articles of war except as ordered by the court. President Lincoln would refuse to comply with Taney's ruling continuing the suspension and the military arrests without congressional approval. The passage of the Habeas Corpus Suspension Act in March 1863 finally ended the controversy at least temporarily by authorizing presidential suspension of the writ during the Civil War.

Taney's decision widely seen as pro-Southern although based in sound legal precedent was first published separately in Baltimore in 1861 followed by a New Orleans printing and another in Jackson Mississippi. This Philadelphia edition would appear the following year. Sabin 48029 John Campbell unknown

1867List309Virginia City: Sutterley and Co 1867. Albumen photograph on mount 4 x 2 ½ inches. Pauline Cushman was an actress and one of the most successful spies for the Union Army. She ingratiated herself with the Confederate army by toasting Jefferson Davis after one of her performances. She was eventually caught and sentenced to death by hanging. She was spared only due to the arrival of the Union Army.

After the war she toured the country giving lectures and performances recounting her experiences as a spy. She eventually headed west marrying in 1872 in San Francisco and eventually working a range of jobs in Arizona Territory Texas and eventually back in San Francisco where she died in 1893 at age 60 from a morphine overdose.

We find no record of this portrait which was taken by the Sutterley brothers James and Clement in their Virginia City Nevada studio somewhere between 1864 and 1867. The Sutterleys operated out of their studio on the Union block of Virginia City for five years before dissolving their partnership in 1867. It is likely that the portrait was taken during one of Cushman’s tours throughout the region during these years.

A beautifully preserved example in very good condition with a small chip to upper margin and some fading. Though Cushman ostensibly would have sold cartes-de-visite in support of her touring few survive on the market today. Sutterley and Co unknown
1861104033
Folded letter sheet 2 1/2 pages of text with original mailing envelope no stamp. Light wear normal aging legible hand; overall near fine. General Andrew Porter 1820-1872 was born in Pennsylvania and was the grandson of Revolutionary War General Andrew Porter. Porter was also related to Mary Todd Lincoln. He served in the Mexican War and was a Brigadier General at the Battle of Bull Run. Porter was appointed Provost Marshall General of the Army of the Potomac in 1862 and left the service in 1864 for health reasons. This letter to Captain William Averell appears to be written in somewhat secretive style. He tells Averell to mail a letter to a Mrs. P. that is under a newspaper. " I will return when it is safe to leave Mrs. P. or sooner if pub." He tells the captain to "please telegraph me at once if anything of importance turns up or I am needed with the command." He goes on to tell Averell keep the s pol.service with us. Much reputation is to be gained by carrying it on or aiding it successfully. This is probably a reference to the Secret Police that was headed by Allan Pinkerton at that time and who were very busy hunting down Confederate spies at that time. He also talks a little about other military matters including a troop build-up in Philadelphia. find a grave website.

This is a Near Fine tight set with light wear to the extremities in the publisher's full brown calf leather binding with black leather tips. There is slight moisture bleed in Volume 1. The spine title is red leather and the volume label is black. The rear hinges of each volume have been reinforced. This set includes the facsimile letter of Grant's original terms for Lee's surrender laid in. Mark Twain was the publisher of this monumental memoir as well as its editor and proof reader. Twain was extremely fond of and a close friend of Grant and encouraged the President and war hero to write his memoirs. Grant was dying of throat cancer but completed his two volume opus dictating the second volume to a secretary. Twain noted in a letter to his daughter that the manuscript was not even set yet and 20000 sets had been ordered from only two states. "Wait till you hear from the other 37." Grant finished his memoirs on July 18 1885 and died five days later on July 23rd. Following his death advance orders of the memoirs reached 300000 sets realizing close to $450000 for his family which was otherwise penniless. In a 1992 New York Times book review General Schwarzkopf is quoted as using Grant's two-volume work as his model calling it the finest military history of the Civil War. Charles L.
