According to DNB for Calvin and Travers alike "the duty of the theologian was merely to identify the church's structure and apply it to contemporary circumstances. It was in this last respect that Travers's originality lay for he subtly adapted Calvin's biblical model to an English context. In order to undermine the diocesan episcopate of the English church Travers started off with an examination of the role of bishops in the New Testament showing that they were not part of a separate hierarchy with authority over other clergy but merely ministers of local congregations. He also differed from Calvin in identifying elders as a type of deacon rather than a separate kind of minister." Our book was written during Travers' 1570-76 sojourn in Geneva where he became a friend of Calvin's successor Theodore Beza. Afterwards he ministered to English merchant marines in Antwerp where he refused to use the Book of Common Prayer for worship. Despite this when Travers returned to England he became chaplain to Elizabeth's chief minister William Cecil and tutor to his son. As DNB notes "his close ties to influential courtiers of a Calvinist inclination" would be key to Travers' career keeping him out of serious trouble despite his strongly presbyterian views. Our volume has a distinguished provenance coming from the celebrated Broxbourne library of Albert Ehrman 1890-1969 a diamond merchant who gathered a fine collection of books at his home at Broxbourne in Hertfordshire. He spent half a century collecting books specializing in incunabula and early bindings as well as early type specimens and bibliographies. Feather says that "his collecting was intelligent and scholarly for he sought to illustrate the history of printing and the book trade and the early development of trade binding." Ehrman also authored learned articles on fine bindings and the history of printing. The present work is uncommon: we could trace just five copies at auction since 1979; only the 1979 copy contained the folding "Table" and that one was noted as "slightly defective and mounted on linen.". First edition of this spectacular presentation souvenir album for the Century of Progress which influenced modernist architects for decades and served as an invaluable exhibit of art deco design motifs. The limited number of presentation albums appear to have been created as gifts by the photographers for the Board of Trustees Officers and Founder Members for the Exposition. These remarkable images include a night shot of the Grand Fountain; aerial views of the grounds; the facade of the Hall of Science which typified the linear geometric Art Deco style of the Fair designed by architect Paul Philippe Cret and one of the interior shots showing the Great Hall announcing Planck’s Quantum and Einstein’s Relativity theories; the General Electric buildings; the stunning Transportation Building with it’s amazing Art Deco facade and a nighttime view of the Planetarium and Terrazzo Reflecting Pools. The photographers have also included an excellent photo of Italo Balbo’s squadron of 24 Savoia-Marchetti SM.55X flying boats above Lake Michigan next to the fairgrounds. His planes had left Italy on June 30 1933 and finally arrived over Chicago on July 15 1933 and even carrying airmail of which the commemorative envelopes are still very desired items by collectors. 1795ST20614Venice: Giuseppe Orlandelli 1795. Fourth Edition. 180 x 114 mm. 7 x 4 5/8". 154 pp 1 leaf.
Pedestrian 19th century half vellum over pink marbled paper boards smooth spine with old ink lettering. WITH 16 ENGRAVED PLATES SHOWING MAGIC TRICKS and numerous diagrams in the text. Tomash & Williams A56; Riccardi I 15. Marbled paper a little chafed title washed first and last leaf a bit soiled and with repairs at inner and outer margins but no text affected half a dozen other leaves with minor repairs or mounted isolated small smudges or corner creases but still an acceptable copy of a book expected to be found in poor shape--the text clean the impression of the engravings crisp and the binding solid.

This is a pleasing copy of a rather scarce collection of mathematical puzzles magic tricks and illusions abounding with illustrations and diagrams. Our author Bolognese architect and engineer Giuseppe Antonio Alberti 1712-68 had a varied career which is reflected in his literary output: his publications discuss civil engineering pyrotechnics mathematics and factories among other topics. Described by Tomash and Williams as "the type of book that mischievous uncles like to own" the present work begins with a study of amusing and unusual arithmetic equations and puzzles before discussing magic tricks and illusions including card tricks dice games and even complex stage illusions involving specialized equipment. These are illustrated with a series of delightful copper engravings with labelled mechanisms sometimes operated by lively little figures or disembodied hands with ruffled sleeves. "Giuochi" was first published in Bologna in 1747 and remained in print for a further 20 years after the present edition. Because this is the kind of book that would have been subjected to uncareful use early editions are difficult to find in the attractive condition seen here. Giuseppe Orlandelli unknown

188423391884. A unique quarto 15 x 12 1/2 inches 382 x 318 mm; 30 double-sided sheets containing approximately 80 preserved specimens of seaweed and sea mosses which are individually dried mounted to card stock and tipped-in; each with the genus in Latin and the date and location of collection handwritten in pencil in the lower mount. Approximately 1 to 5 specimens per page. Binding is broken and significantly worn with some pages loose. Specimens are intact and separated by blotting paper and remain in very good to excellent condition with some exhibiting only minor losses.

While seaweed collecting was a popular Victorian pastime in Britain this rare herbarium is filled with a profusion of north American specimens primarily from Bay Ridge Brooklyn to Nantucket island as well as some from California and Bermuda. In the Victorian era seaweed collecting or algology was far more than a casual beach activity; it was a massive cultural trend that married scientific curiosity artistic expression and social freedom. While the Victorians were obsessed with all things natural history a trend called "natural theology" seaweed held a unique appeal especially for women. While studying animal anatomy was seen as "unladylike" at the time collecting seaweed was considered a genteel and healthy outdoor activity. As a result several women used the opportunity to make significant scientific contributions.

Often called "Ocean Flowers" or "Sea Mosses" these specimens became the focus of elaborate scrapbooks and pioneered some of the world's first photographic techniques Anna Adkins's Produced Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions 1843 was the first book ever illustrated with photographs. Today these Victorian albums are more than just relics of a cultural fad; they are vital biological records. Scientists utilize the DNA from these 150-year-old pressed samples to track how ocean temperatures and species distributions have changed since the Industrial Revolution.

Creating a seaweed album was a meticulous process. Collectors didn't just dry the weeds; they "resurrected" them to look alive on the page. This album demonstrates the incredible skill of the maker. unknown

He is famous for using the formula "abracadabra" in the treatment of illness and for amassing a personal library of 60000 scrolls. The 1107 hexameter lines that make up this essay were inspired by the "Medicina Plinii" a book of pharmacy by a pseudo-Pliny of the mid-4th-century as well as the real Pliny's Natural History and the Greek guide to materia medica by Dioscorides. The text consists of prescriptions and remedies for about 65 different diseases. The poem was extremely influential in the practice of Late-Antique and Medieval medicine. It was reprinted 21 times between the first edition of 1484 and 1731 apart from inclusion in many compilations of medical texts. As late as 1866 it was translated into German Prescriptions cover a range of ailments from headache itching elephantiasis bad breath gall stones pimples treatment of wounds and even money bites. The text is followed by Remmius Flavianus "Carmen de ponderibus et mensuris" a versified explanation of weights and measurees specifically for use by physicians. Rear joint cracked with consequent slight looseness leaves probably washed and resized because extremely fresh and at the same time a shade less than white.

This is an early work by the Puritan lawyer and indefatigable pamphleteer William Prynne 1600-69 who had a very great deal of advice mostly unsolicited and unwelcomed for the fair sex. In the text here he rails against many things including "face-painting; the wearing of supposititious poudred frizled or extraordinary long haire; the inordinate affectation of corporall beautie; and womens mannish unaturall impudent and unchristian cutting of their haire." While the work can be viewed as a moral diatribe to us it is illuminating as social history talking as it does about the dress and grooming of persons of quality and the responses these evoked in the first half of the 17th century. Prynne graduated from Oriel College Oxford in 1621 became a student at Lincoln's Inn and before long began producing pamphlets that occupy more than 250 entries in STC and Wing. Our work is a forerunner to one of his most infamous and ill-timed works "Historio-mastix" in which he vigorously denounced female actors appearing on the stage--at the same moment Queen Henrietta Maria was preparing a masque to present at court. This misstep led to a conviction for sedition and his sentence included a £5000 fine life imprisonment and the removal of his ears. His later pamphlets were not noticeably less inflammatory and these led to a further sedition charge as well as more disfigurement including a slit nose and a brand on his cheek announcing him as a seditious liar. Our copy is recorded as lot #271 of Sotheby's "Catalogue of Rare and Valuable Books Selected from the Ancient & Celebrated Library at Arbury Hall Warwickshire the Property of Sir Francis Newdigate-Newdegate" 1920. The earliest recorded owner however is an ancestor of Sir Francis: the 17th century gentlewoman whose name is variously given as Juliana or Julian Leigh bap. 1610 d. 1685. She was the daughter of Sir Francis Leigh of Newnham Regis Warwickshire and the granddaughter of Thomas Egerton Viscount Brackley who was Lord High Chancellor of England. In 1632 she married Sir Richard Newdigate 1st Baronet 1602-1678 of Arbury Hall who became Lord Chief Justice. Notably Newdigate was an exact contemporary of Prynne at Oxford and they were both admitted to the bar in 1628 the year our "Love-Lockes" was printed. It is certain that Newdigate and Prynne were well acquainted as together on behalf of the crown they famously prosecuted leaders of the Irish rebellion in 1644 and 1645 resulting in multiple executions for high treason. n.p. unknown

Collection of correspondence between US officials and Theodore S. Fay among others at the time secretary of the US legation in Bern Switzerland. In 1859 Fay had delivered a report to the Swiss Federal Council Memorandum concerning the admission of North American Israelites to settle in Switzerland that was important in the struggle for emancipation of Jews in Switzerland. It had provided an overview of discriminatory Swiss laws against Jews in Switzerland while going to great depth to refute arguments that supported these laws. As a result small steps were taken in the Swiss cantons contributing to the eventual emancipation of Jews in Switzerland in 1866. Missing wraps but for most of spine. Very lightly age-toned.

2. Address "To the President of the United States." Single light blue printed leaf. Not dated. Memorial of Subscribers of the commonwealth of Pennsylvania protesting against the Swiss laws discriminating against Jews in Switzerland. An attempt to influence the President to take steps to abolish the discrimination against Jews in Switzerland. Light wear along edges of leaf small chips and folded several times. Undated.

3. This Memorial. 1857. Printed Octavo circular 4pp. Protest addressed to the President of the United States against the Swiss for their restrictive laws against American Jews. Vigorous protest to President James Buchanan against blatant anti-Semitism in Switzerland. "It so happens that certain Cantons of the Swiss Confederation among which Basle and others have laws prohibiting Israelites from sojourning temporarily domiciliating or establishing themselves permanently. The treat. has clearly failed. for we are met by a dark age prescriptive law declaring us unworthy of participating in the rights of our fellow citizens on account of our professing the Israelitisch religion." This demand illustrates the disparity between the United States Constitution which protects freedom of religion and yet is not doing enough to protect these same freedoms for its citizens when they travel abroad. Signed by various Jewish petitioners including Isaac M. Wise of Ohio. Scarce: Singerman 1515 cites two other known copies of this pamphlet. With some wear along edges small chips and folded three times. Lightly age-toned. unknown

179426925London: Oxford: Brethren's Society for the Furtherance of the Gospel. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1794. First English Edition. Hardcover. Western; Pioneer; AMERICANA; American Indian; We fit archival quality clear acrylic covers for additional protection whenever possible. ; Engraved map; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; xii15912342331 22 pages; Loskiel George Henry TRANSLATED FROM THE GERMAN BY CHRISTIAN IGNATIUS LA TROBE. History of The Mission of The United Brethren among The Indians in North America In Three Parts. Modern full gilt paneled blue morocco spine gilt. With large. Folding Map a few minor repairs. Internally generally clean & crisp with contents VG. This work describes artistic spiritual educational and political values of the American Indians. Considered by Sabin the best authority on the Delawares Nautikokes Shawnee and other tribes in Pennsylvania & New York. The labors of this mission lay chiefly among the Delawares the Nautikokes the Shawanese and other tribes in Pennsylvania and New York upon which it is the best authority both as to tradition and facts having been drawn up from the accounts furnished by Gottlieb Spangenberg and David Zeisberger missionaries among the Indian tribes during forty years. Among the subjects narrated is that of the massacre of Gnaden-hutten and Salem. The translator has omitted some matter relative to former enemies of the mission. Part I. Is divided into eleven chapters whose subject titles indicate a much wider range for the work than the mere report of missions among the Indians. Among them are Hints concerning the Origin of the Indian Nations. ---Of the Language Arts and Sciences known among the Indians. Of their Religious Ceremonies and Superstition. Of their Dress Dwellings and Housekeeping. Marriages and Education of Children. Agriculture and Breeding of Cattle. Of their Manner of Hunting and Fishing. Diseases and Method of Curg Funerals and Mourning. Political Constitution of the Delawares and Iroquois. Indian Manner of making War and Peace. Parts II. And III. Are devoted to the history of the Indians under the charge of the Moravian Mission. Among the subjects is the narrative of that saddest of stories the massacre of Gnadenhutten and Salem ---saddest most atrocious most damnable record of human infamy and bloody shame. A remarkable omission occurs in La Trobes translation. A copy of the first edition had been presented to Zeisberger who expressed the greatest regrets that the names of Eliot McKee and other former enemies of the mission had been recorded as they had since repented. At his request the names of many who had brought terrible misfortunes upon the missionaries and their converts were omitted in this translation.
