In 1816, after some difficulty, Dupin was allowed to visit Great Britain to study its commerce and industry. This work is the result which placed him in the foremost rank of statisticians. "In the following work, I have endeavoured to exhibit the full extent of the Military and Naval Forces which the government of Great Britain can bring into the field, or launch upon the ocean... My observations on these subjects were derived from a residence of five years in England; during which time I was constantly employed in visiting and viewing every object and institution worthy of notice relative to the British Army and Navy." Volume 1: Force Militaire. First edition. Volume 2: Force Navale. First edition. Volume 3: Force Commerciale. Second edition. Provenance: Colonel Douglas-Mercer, Scots Fusilier Guards, bookplate. 96986First Edition. Hardcover. Half suede and marbled papered boards 430 × 310 mm with 140 leaves containing 66 samples of fabric circa 1870 mounted one to a page on 69 almost consecutive pages; binding a trifle rubbed; the contents are in superb condition. The samples vary in size but they must average around 40 to 50 square centimetres each; they are accompanied by extensive technical details including threading and loom settings handwritten neatly and in the one hand in Italian. One page has no sample one has two samples two have a sample but no explanatory text two are blank as are about 200 other pages in the book. Ten early entries also include detailed and really quite charming hand-drawn diagrams. The text seems to describe how to actually MAKE the cloth . <p>The inkstamp of 'A. Lohbauer Buchbinder Stüssihofstatt No. 4 Zürich' appears on the front endpaper with '1871 / 1219' added in ink. When the item was originally purchased we initially assumed it to be a catalogue of cloth for use by the bookbinder but closer inspection makes this highly unlikely. For a start many of the fabrics are far too delicate and beautiful for such utilitarian purposes. Whatever its original intended purpose the scrapbook now takes on a much more significant role as home to 66 exquisite jewel-like pieces of fabric upwards of 150 years old. hardcover

1802374694Montreal 1802. 1p. Slight loss of paper caused by removal of wax seal on right margin not affecting text. Old fold. Else fine. 1p. An excellent autograph letter signed from this prominent fur trader explorer and author of TRAVELS AND ADVENTURES IN CANADA AND THE INDIAN TERRITORIES published in 1809. Henry was sixty-three at the time this letter was written and mainly occupied with directing fur operations from Montreal. He evidently writes concerning his son's bad debts: "My last to you was by last post was so much hurt by Robert's behavior that I scarcely remember what I wrote. his Horse and Gigg it is only just that the produce of it should go to pay those Gentm who indorsed his notes - how these Gentm could be persuaded to do such a thing is beyond my comprehension without consulting you. if he is turned loose he may be induced to commit some act worse than what he has already done - therefore if he can get clear of his imposing creditors - send him here as soon as possible - but dont come under any promise to any other to whom he owes only those acted by yr orders. unknown
