An early British petitionary leaflet calling for greater enforcement of customs laws for imported goods. The author charges that most consignments of foreign goods are now being made to "Naturalized Foreigners and Unfreemen" who are not under the same obligations as Freemen who state in their oath "not to Colour of Cover the Goods of Aliens." If "no Remedey be given" it is argued "all Persons will be discouraged from taking their Freedoms and few will be left of Substance to perform the necessary Service in the Government of London." The document is among the earliest examples of lobbying literature which first began proliferating during the major changes in British government in the mid-1710s. 1794WRCAM30005Philadelphia: Printed by Francis Childs and John Swaine 1794. 8pp. Dbd. Contemporary ownership signature on titlepage and manuscript notes on final leaf. Very good. This copy bears the ownership signature of noted New York jurist and legal scholar James Kent who ran for Congress from New York in 1793 but was defeated by his brother-in-law Theodorus Bailey. He would go on to a distinguished career as a judge on the Chancery court and as an author of legal commentaries. At the conclusion of the text is a manuscript note: <br> <br> "Mr. Wadsworth stated in the House of Representatives the 19th May 1794 that within the last six months American vessels & property had been captured by the British Privateer in the W. Indies to the extent of one million of dollars - & that other nations had seized American property to 1/2 mil. dol. & that the total loss to our commerce was 1 1/2 mil. dol." <br> <br> In this report to President Washington the new Secretary of State Edmund Randolph details the depredations against American shipping caused by the powers involved in the French Revolutionary Wars. He quotes from a study by the "committee of Philadelphia" on the interference with American trade by the British French Spanish and Dutch and summarizes the methods used by those countries. The British impress American sailors into service the French are embargoing American goods etc. He makes no recommendations as to an appropriate response. <br> <br> OCLC locates four copies. Scarce. Large woodcut of coat of arms of the Dutch Republic along with the arms of all member states woodcut initial also with modified Dutch Republic arms. Crease down the vertical and horizontal middle other small creases in the lower half ink offsetting from folding on lower half small tears and chips along edges small dark stain just above top woodcut. The origins of the Dutch Naval College. <br/><br/>Fascinating broadside detailing tax duties on ships trading in the East and West Indies America the Cape of Good Hope and elsewhere levied for - and applied towards - the newly founded Dutch Royal Naval College "Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart" or Seminary for Navigation which produced officers for the Dutch Sea Service. Notably these officers were not trained at sea but in the classroom -- and in the courtyard where the navy erected large model training ship for the ultimate experiential learning. The vessel was large enough for young students to climb the rigging. It is with good reason that graduates were described as "paper sailors." <br/><br/>According to this broadside the Dutch Republic approved and consented to the establishment and maintenance of the Kweekschool in the year 1781 for which the bespoke taxes were collected. The academy was officially opened in 1785 the same year that this "Publicatie" was printed. Taxes were only levied on ships of the East Indies Oostindien and the Cape of Good Hope Kaap.<br/><br/>It was with some urgency that the Kweekschool was developed: at this time there was a radical shift in the balance of maritime power: the power of the Dutch East India Company was in gradual decline in deference to the rising British East India Company which came to dominate global trade. In particular 1785 marks the first full year following the end of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War which broke out over British and Dutch disagreements on the legality and conduct of Dutch trade with Britain's enemies during the War of American Independence. <br/><br/>The broadside is signed in print by Caspar Clotterbooke 1711-1791 who was Secretary of the States of Holland at the time.<br/><br/>OCLC shows no copy in any institution outside of the Netherlands. Our copy appears to be the only one on the market; it is probable that this is the only one in private hands.<br/><br/>Literature: See especially Margaret E. The major roadblock to a Treaty with the United States was English board-and-search tactics reminiscent of the objectionable practice that had helped to bring on the War of 1812. England claimed the right to board and search any vessel suspected of carrying on the Trade. The Earl of Aberdeen reports to Lord Ashburton on the "clamour about the right of search liberty of the seas &c." which "has already created so much excitement in the United States." Secretary of State Daniel Webster and his British counterpart settled the dispute in the Webster-Ashburton Treaty which also resolved the question of Maine's boundary with Canada.<br/> This publication treats exclusively the issues involved in the Slave Trade. The Correspondence describes "the nature of the stations or baracoons in which Slaves are collected on shore to be sold to the traders"; the areas of West Africa where the trade occurs; and the tactics of the ships which convey the slaves.<br/>OCLC 1007185044 2- Lib. Fine.<br/> offered with Manuscript document headed "Chamber of Commerce 2nd March 1801." Folio leaf folded to 1 3 blanks pp addressed on last page "For Mr. T. W. Francis". The manuscript prints Resolutions to be considered for revision of certain Rules at the next meeting.<br/><br/> The Rules set forth in XVI numbered paragraphs were adopted at a meeting on January 5 1801. AAS's copy has our imprint; other copies list only the year not the month or day. The Chamber's web site states "Since 1801 the Chamber has brought area businesses and civic leaders together to promote growth and create opportunity in our region." This mission comports with that printed in its Articles of Association: "For the purpose of aiding the Trade of the City of Philadelphia by carrying into effect such Rules and Regulations as may from time to time be established with respect to our Commerce and the adjustment of Mercantile differences between each other." <br/> Thomas Whilling Francis 1767-1815 born in Philadelphia graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1784. He then entered the family mercantile firm of Willing and Francis. In 1786 he became a private in the Fourth Company Second Philadelphia Battalion of the City Cavalry and years later was promoted to Captain. An original member of the Chamber of Commerce he served on its Committee for the first month of its existence and in 1815 was its vice-president. He was also a director of various Philadelphia mercantile educational governmental and benevolent establishments. 19505503N.p.: Ministerstvo Pishevoy Promishlennocti 1950. Octavo-sized accordion fold 25 x 18 cm. 24 pages. Illustrated with seventeen color plates by C.B. Popov. First edition. A trade catalogue of Russian liquors issued by the Russian Ministry of Food. The spirits are of all types with a wide range of vodkas but also a rich variety of cordials brandies and dessert liqueurs. The handsome color plates all stand out for their single color backgrounds and the printing process would appear to have been a hybrid combining photolithography and lithography and then colored. Whatever one makes of the Soviet cultural landscape in general it did attain high standards in some fields and in a modest way this trade catalogue is a proud reflection of its aesthetic achievement. Clean and bright within. Textured wrappers with debossed copper lettering and gilt ruling; lightly soiled and with wear and some separation at spine. Good. OCLC locates no copies. Bound in original green coated paper wrappers printed in gold ink; a crease at the lower corner of the front wrappers a few chips and nicks but otherwise an excellent survival in very good condition. Unrecorded trade catalogue beautifully illustrated to highlight the simplicity of design and the quality of the wood used in the construction of all types of sleighs and carriages. Very little is know of R. M. Bingham & Co. and the only recorded reference is to an advertisement for the company in an undated catalogue for Palm & Fletcher of New York City who sold carriage ornaments and artistic supplies. The lithographer was Punderson & Crisand a New Haven printer who did most of his work between 1870 and 1879. The company is known for its views of New Haven images of the harbor the Yale College year book of 1870 and a series of maps of New Haven and the surrounding counties. unknown books

Worn at the corners and spine extremeties with bending and discoloration. General shelfwear to the board edges and some darkening to the brown cloth from age and use. Soiling and scuffing to the text block edges. Hinges are solid and the binding is strong. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown appears to be the only marking in the volume.The pages themselves are clean and bright with magazine style thickness. A mix of colorized and black and white illustrations and photos throughout. 796 pp. including a robust bibliography and index. This volume chronicles everything from the agriculture and propagation side of the industry to the commerce and trade that introduced coffee to Europe England and North America. First and only edition, [2], 30pp., stitched as issued in blue paper wrappers, a very good copy. The author argues against putting an additional duty on sugar "which... would be a great hardship on the sugar-planter in the West Indies, and very little benefit to the revenue...". He sets out all the costs involved in producing sugar, such as the price of slaves and the cost of keeping them, the higher freight costs, insurance, cost of animals and contributions to the defence force. Finally, he states the advantages of the sugar trade for Britain and shows how an additional duty would be to the detriment of the trade.
