The book is reminiscent of Ambrose Bierce's Devil's Dictionary. For example an early entry is for "寫眞çµå©š" shashin kekkon or Picture Marriage: "The Japanese who have always imitated foreign countries in every aspect of their lives are now the only ones in the world with this unique and original invention."<br /> <br /> Picture Marriage is just one example of Yamazaki's commentary on the anti-Japanese climate in the United States at the time. Preserved in a larger modern cardboard frame 37.4 x 25.6 cm. = A beautiful scientifically accurate illustration of four beetles. Included are a cardinal beetle Pyrochroa coccinea a carrion beetle Dendroxena sp. a rhinoceros beetle Oryctes female and another smaller beetle which we leave to the experienced coleopterists to identify. On the verso the following genera are written in an old hand: Pyrochroa Buprestis Scarabeus and Sylpha. Signed on the larger sheet in an old hand Jac. Sturm del. i.e. the German naturalist engraver and publisher Jakob or Jacob Sturm 1771-1841. Sturm illustrated many zoological botanical and entomological works e.g. Abbildungen zu Karl Illiger's Übersetzung von Oliviers Entomologie and Deutschlands Fauna in Abbildungen nach der Natur mit Beschreibungen. However on the sheet verso itself inscribed in a different old hand viz. J. A. Boerner i.e. the German painter etcher lithographer auctioneer print collector and dealer Johann Andreas Boerner 1785-1862. It is quite possible that this is actually Sturm's work and that Boerner merely added his name as an owner. Boerner did paint animals however no other entomological drawings are known from his hand. On stylistical grounds we rather attribute these drawings to Sturm. Moreover they were found in a map with drawings and print proofs that are certainly from the latter. Some very light foxing otherwise an excellent clean item with the colouring accurate and bright. unknown

19480012258Worcester Massachusetts. Good with no dust jacket. 1948. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting journal kept by a very well-read woman in mid-century Massachusetts. The journal belonged to Elizabeth Hazen Beard nee Sherborne or Sherburne 1909-1993. She was born in Worcester Massachusetts to parents Mary Alicia Hazen and WIlliam Frances Sherborne Sherburne where she lived her entire life. She attended Milford High School and then Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She married Sidney Beard a tool maker and together they had two sons David and William. This journal has multiple components though its main focus is on Beards literary interests. Though census data indicates that Beard did not have a career outside of the home it seems she was part of a literary society or other academic club. In this journal she writes what seems to be a lengthy lecture about contemporary childrens literature where she discusses the benefits of reading for children as well as several childrens books and authors. Some of the childrens books she discusses are Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McClaskey a book of animal stories by George Duplaix The Little History of the United States by Mable Pyne Airplane Ready by Sanford Tuasey Little Boat Boy by Jean Bothwell. Later in the journal she writes another lengthy lecture where she focuses on the Massachusetts literary scene including its authors Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson places famous local authors wrote their masterpieces local landmarks that are important in literature and more. Her final lecture that she recorded in this journal is titled Reading I have Enjoyed. Here she writes extensively on the book Early American Decoration by Esther Brazer. Beard is well-written bright thoughtful and deeply passionate about literature. Her written lectures read like elaborate book reports with added elements of history and philosophy. Another interesting feature of the journal are two essays dealing with geopolitics - completely unrelated to Beards work on literature. These two essays are written in a hand that is not Beards and the author is unknown. The first essay is titled Changing Ideas of Empire England and the second is untitled but is about the Wests relationship with Russia and the Cold War. One of the essays is written within the pages of the journal and the second is tipped in. Both are written by an intelligent and knowledgeable author and are written as speeches just as Beards entries are. These were written much later than Beards work as they reference a deep conflict between West and Russia focused on Russia fomenting Muslim discontent in Iran. There is no hint as to who is the author of these two sections. Some brief excerpts follow: Reading is one of lifes recreations. Thoughtful parents teachers and friends should help to instill the love of books with as sure a place and as great patience as are employed in cultivating good manners honesty unselfishness and other fundamental habits of life . Mass is rich with places of literary interest and abounds with scenes reminiscent of our best loved authors. If certain of your pet authors receive little or no mention in this paper I hope you will forgive these sins of omission as time permits me to mention only a few of the many. Reading I Have Enjoyed The book I have chosen for my subject is one that I am constantly reading and referring to as an enthusiast of handwork and decoration . For anyone with an interest in 20th century literature and literary endeavours this is a must-own manuscript. It would also be of interest to a gender studies program as Beard is recorded in the history books as a Housewife yet this journal presents her as a bright and brilliant mind with much going on outside of her domestic life. The journal measures about 9x7 inches and contains 84 pages. It is about 90% complete. The book is hardcover and the covers are in good condition. There is some wear on the corners. The binding is in good condition and the pages are glued and sewn though loosening. The lined pages are in good condition. The handwriting is quite legible. Interior with metal dividers including two that are hinged. All interior and exterior surfaces except bottom hand painted in bright colors and with applied golden metallic glitter highlights. Signed by the artist “Jim M.†on the top. Very good.</p> <p>This self-work was created by an Indiana union ironworker. It is a highly personal statement of with themes of labor God music motor engines fear sex and drugs.</p> <p>On the box’s front panel a work scene with a crane lifting an I-beam is shown with words identifying the artist by his labor union membership number and Indianapolis union affiliation: “Union 1105046 Ironworker 22#.â€</p> <p> Vignettes on the side and rear panels show a John Deere tractor in a corn field an undersea fantasy and a “Kodack Pentech†Kodak Pentax camera with the name “Jim†on the lens.</p> <p>The top of the box depicts a guitar and a jet airplane and text: “$200.00 Cash! Wayne Newton Roy Clark Music 24hr. Sunnydale Travle sic American Trans Air Brenson sic.†This likely refers to Branson Missouri where Country Music musician Roy Clark opened a theater in 1983 for himself and the likes of Wayne Newton to perform. On the base of the guitar the artist signed his work “Jim M.†</p> <p>The inside of the box’s cover shows a night scene along interstate highway I-70. This highway passes through Indianapolis and intersects in Missouri with the main road leading south to Branson. Based on this reference to I-70 and to the reference to Ironworkers Union Local 22 which is based in Indianapolis Indiana Jim likely lived and worked nearby.</p> <p>Another interior scene shows a go-kart racing under a moon-lit sky. The box’s interior has themes of religious piety sex alcohol and drugs. An image of a sparkling golden cross is surrounded by hell-fires and burning and by a large marijuana or cannabis leaf. Painted words read “Christ God Jesus Jim Church Fear Sex Pot Booze Canibiss sicâ€<br /> Jim’s and Jesus’ names intersect and share the letter “J.â€</p> <p>An intriguing self-work an autobiographical folk art box a painted “self-portrait†of an imaginative Midwestern ironworker.</p> unknown

18604105Missouri: April 1 1860. Very good. 4pp. on a single folded sheet. Original mailing folds minor toning. An informative letter written by Charles H. Cram in Missouri to a friend in New England dated "April Fools Day 1860" in red pencil at the top of the first page. Cram mentions hoop skirts Pike's Peak and slavery while trying to decide whether to continue westward during the latter years of the California Gold Rush. Cram's letter reads in part: "Everybody is going to Pikes Peak but me. I think some of them will wish they were back again but they have got the gold fever and nothing else will cure them. I have learned better than to follow the biggest nois and the great rush. The emigrants to Pikes Peake will most of them will have to sleep on the ground and depend on the rifle for something to eat. I may start for Santa Fe about the first of June. I can git 15 dollars a month to drive a teem to Santa Fe. If I do cross the plains I shall go to California but if I have good health I shall stay here though I do not like to live in a slave state."<br /> <br /> In another portion of his letter Cram addresses his correspondent's question of whether slaves and freedpersons wore hoop skirts in Missouri. Cram writes: "You wanted to know if niggers wore hoops. Some do and some don't some slaves in broadcloth and silk and some go nearly naked. Slaves have there stent to do so much & if they do more they are payed for it. Most of them have a piece of ground that they call their own. What time they get they work on it. That is how they git their fine cloths. There is not a nigger in Missouri that works as hard as I do but I have consolation that I can work only when I am a mind to. You tell Albert not to start out among strangers as I did for he will find the people different in the country from them in New England."<br /> <br /> Cram then speaks to the emigrant populations he encounters out west as well as the agricultural bounty and animal life of Missouri: "The greatest difficulty I had was to learn the French and German language. I have been for weeks where I could not understand a word but now I can understand anything that comes along. But now for something else. The peach trees are in flower and the woods look green. Cattle and horses pick their living here the year round. I have not seen a barn in the country. The way to feed a horse is to tie him up to a tree and throw him a few ears of corn on the ground. I cannot rite to day much for there is half a dozen in the room talking about pikes peak or some young lady and how many negroes her father owns etc."<br /> <br /> Cram ends his letter with some advice for his friends back east: "Tell Mr. Bosworth that if he can rais $500 that he had better go to Cansas Kansas and go to farming. If you can persuade Andrew Marshall to go west it will be a good lesson for him."<br /> <br /> A mid-19th century manuscript letter with informative observations on the clothing of slaves and with notable observations of western life in Missouri. An attempt by the important educator reformer and sister of Harriet Beecher Stowe to promote the cause of her pupil author Delia Bacon in the aftermath of a matrimonial breach of promise suit and her prosecution in the court of public opinion by the authorities at Yale whom Beecher felt had thwarted her case. Bacon would seek solace in her research popularizing the notion that Shakespeare's works were actually written by a group of writers including Francis Bacon and Walter Scott. 1932008076New York 1932. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. A souvenir for a High Society event that also involved the cream of the architectural field. Held at the brand new ultra-luxe Waldorf Astoria which had opened its doors at its new address on October 1 1931. Scarce -- no copies listed on OCLC First Search. 4to. 30 by 22 cm. 112 pp. plus wraps. With many advertisements especially for architectural firms and developers and these include often photographs and drawings of recently completed buildings or ones in the offing which were to become iconic -- the RCA Building as an example. Virtually all the ads relate to the building trades in one way or another including ads for brick companies heating or furnaces etc. Art Deco is the salient design although there are photos of private mansions in a range of styles found in upper crust suburbs to this day. The event itself was comprised of four "Episodes" in New York history. These were skits two of the Episodes having more than one scene in which the players drawn from the Upper Crust of New York Society both Old Knickerbocker and newer moneyed members surnames such as Pennoyer Schieffelin de Peyster van Alen a few descendants of the characters van Rensselaer but also at least one famous actress that being Beatrice Lillie with were decked out in period costume. The scenes re-enacted the arrival of the Half Moon in 1609 the purchase of Ma-na-ha-ta by Peter Minuet in 1626 Captain Kidd in New York in 1696 the Declaration of Independence as announced in City Hall Park July 9 1776 Washington's Inauguration in 1789 and the Inaugural Ball following. We would also mention that Tony Sarg was one of the people who put together the skits! Finally as befitting a Society event program there are copious lists of members of the various organizations and/or contributors to the event. Unlike today these lists provide the addresses of the listees many of whom were among the wealthiest New Yorkers of the day. First half dozen leaves have a distinct crease mark diagonally by the front corner. Front cover has light soiling and the like. Spine extremities with closed tears and wear. Clean within and overall a VG copy. unknown
