018494Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood. Unknown . 3/4 Leather & Paper Bds. Near Fine. 12mo - 7-3/4" Tall Large. Period binding of 3/4 brown calf over brown marbled paper bds with contrasting green marbled end papers and gilt titles on the spine. A unique example of this classic book rebound with real photographs mounted on stiff card stock interspersed with the text pages. These photos are hand- titled in pen by the assumed individual who had this bound. His name and date in pen Curtis T. Perry Paris Oct. 10 1879 appear on the top right-hand corner of the title page and the script matches that of the photo titles. The book contains pps 1-252 and 35 photo plates which I assume have to do with the areas mentioned in the book as it looks like many of these match places and buildings in corresponding chapters. Volume I only of an apparent 2 volume custom bound set. Undated by the publisher but likely from the 1878 edition published 2 years prior to her death in 1880. Quite attractive as well as unique!

William Blackwood hardcover

A 20th Century Exact sized FACSIMILE of "An Embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to The Grand Tartar Cham Emperor Of China EMPEROUR OF CHINA Delivered by their Excellencies PETER DE GOYER and JACOB DE KEYZER At his Imperial City of PEKING. WHEREIN THE CITIES TOWNS VILLAGES PORTS RIVERS etc. In their Passages from CANTON to PEKING Are Ingeniously Described by MR. JOHN NIEVHOFF Steward to the AMBASSADOURS. ALSO An Epistle of Father JOHN ADAMS their Antagonist concerning the whole Negotiation. WITH An Appendix of several Remarks taken out of Father ATHANASIUS KIRCHER. Englished and set forth with their several Sculptures by JOHN OGILEY Esq; Master of his Majesties Revels in the Kingdom of Ireland. LONDON Printed by John Macock for the Author MDCLXIX." Due to being translated into English by the bookseller John Ogilby in 1669 this is one of the earliest European attempts at an accurate description of China and its population. Due to its isolation under the Ming dynasty earlier descriptions of China relied on fanciful tales and legends many originating from ancient and medieval texts and hearsay. A Folio sized hardcover book measuring 42.5 x 4.5 x 28.2 cm approx 16.3/4" x 11.1" x 2.5" . In powder blue cloth boards with a brown spine unknown material with gilt title lettering and an inset image of an Oriental on the front board. Top edge gilt. Some light wear and a few negligible marks to the light blue cloth almost inevitable with this colour actually a rather strange binding but looks good on the shelf showing the spine only. INTERNALLY FINE. A former Owner's bookplate Dennis Law on the front pastedown otherwise NO Inscriptions or marks. A Fine clean and tight copy. 18pp prelims double page Map 327pp 106pp 6 blanks. Black and White Plates Illus. Maps Plans and Portraits. The book consists of both an account of an embassy of the Dutch East India Company to the Shunzhi Emperor 1638-1661 and an account of general Chinese customs and occupations. The information was gathered and collated by Johan Nieuhof one of the party which visited the Emperor in Beijing. His first-hand account therefore allowed accurate descriptions and depictions of Chinese architecture clothing and landscapes. Notably the book contains possibly one of the earliest descriptions of the cultivation of TEA specifically stating its expense and its value to East Asian society. A great chance to acquire a great copy of a facsimile of a book which in the Original costs many LITERAL Thousands of £s and $s!
