Small octavo pp 299 the office copy from County of Santa Barbara Department of Agriculture with two neat stamps on the front endpapers and a stamp on top bottom and fore-edge but otherwise extremely clean internally. Brown cloth decorated in green very slightly frayed at the spine head but otherwise very good. Extremely scarce. A highly important work in viticulture. For some twenty years earlier the phylloxera insect had decimated American vineyards having created equal havoc earlier in Europe. Some American vines had natural resistance to the American phylloxera insect and the book promoted hybridisation and grafting using these at first less popular cultivars. First American Edition. Incisione in rame all'acquaforte, cm 25 x 62 (il foglio). All.mo ac Ex.mo D. D. Paulo Hippolito de Bauvillier Duci Sancti Aniani Pari Franciae Equiti Ordinum Regis Eiusque apud Sanctam Sedem Oratori Extraordinario. In lastra, in basso a destra: “ P. Subleyras Inven. Pinxit, et Sculp. Romae 1738”. Come si evince dalla nota didascalica in lastra, riportata sulla sinistra del foglio, si tratta della tiratura tardo settecentesca (1787 circa), giacché il Sublyeiras, non fece tirare che pochi esemplari di questa tavola, a Roma, che però fu mal impressa. Cosicché, nel 1787, egli la fece tirare di nuovo in (pur soli) cento esemplari, per moltiplicare “.. l'Admirable composition du Sublime Tableau de meme grandeur qui appartient actuellement au Roi”. Di fatto di questa stampa sono conosciuti molti stati, forse addirittura cinque. Ecco che noi la collochiamo in un ambito fra il tardo settecento e il primo ottocento, a giudicare dalla tipologia di carta e dall'impressione. Pierre Subleyras (Saint – Gilles – du – Gard, 1699 – Rome, 1749) è stato un pittore francese, attivo durante il tardo barocco e il primo periodo neoclassico, principalmente in Italia. Esemplare purtroppo incollato su cartoncino recente e a stretti margini, ma pulita, in bella morsura e in bella impressione.
