174131833Midhurst West Sussex England 1741. Very Good. Midhurst West Sussex England 1741. Original large example of "Scherenschnitte" or scissor art depicting scenes predominantly from the Old Testament 41x32cm.; mounted within a scherenschnitte paper frame 51x43cm. The entire display is laid down on black mat in a 19th-century frame not examined out of frame.

Scherenschnitte is the folk art tradition of cutting paper designs often incorporating rotational symmetry and silhouettes. A treasured Chinese art dating back to the invention of paper the tradition was adopted in Europe in the 16th century before making its way to Colonial America primarily the Pennsylvania region two centuries later.

This is a stunning English example in which the plethora of intricate detail can take some time to take in. The interior centerpiece depicts Adam and Eve under the forbidden apple tree. They and their furry friends are surrounded by an intricate floral border. Below: the twelve Apostles; above: Mary in the manger Christ on the cross and Jesus ascending to Heaven.

Radiating outward lie what are to us the most impressive part of this piece - eighteen vignettes sixteen from the Old Testament each admirable for their skillful artistry and execution. Jonah and the Whale Cain slaying Abel Death and Time the Last Judgment and Hell are all depicted the latter in the form of a fire-breathing monster. Happily for the historian the British royal arms are depicted as well as a circular lozenge stating the date and a name: "January 1741" and "James Cox" presumably the artist.

Around the whole is a splendid 4cm-wide border executed in eight scissor-cut strips glued together and each with two or three cut circles within which the artist has written the titles of each Bible scene. Each circle has its own surrounding design with only a couple examples repeated. Though we don't know when it arrived in America this piece was found in a Lancaster Pennsylvania house. A truly superb example of this traditional folk art and a lovely survival. . unknown

171744150Jena, [Catharina Magdalena] Nisius für Johann Volkmar Marckgraf, 1717. (2), 40 SS.; durchschossen mit 21 Bll., alle mit Anmerkungen von zeitgenöss. Hand. Roter Bronzefirnisumschlag der Zeit. 4to.
4to. (2), 40 pp.; interleaved with 21 ff., containing contemporary handwritten notes throughout. Contemporary red brove-varnish paper wrappers. First edition of Murray' master disputation: the author's interleaved personal copy with his extensive autograph revisions for the second, significantly expanded edition which would be published by Bohn in Hamburg in 1718 (an octavo volume of 136 pages). The thesis discusses the Kenites, a nomadic clan in the ancient Levant, whose lands God promised to the descendants of Abraham: "On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: the Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites" (Gen 15:18-19). "Their origin is not known: some locate it in Arabia, others in the Philistine states or in Judah" (cf. Zedler XV, 452). The Kenites' possible origin from the Arabian Peninsula (Arabia Felix) is discussed on p. 24 in particular (with numerous corrections and amendments in the margin and additional notes on the "Sinus Arabicus" and the "mare rubrum" on the following interleaf). Rare in all editions: no copy in trade records internationally. - Murray (1695-1771), of Scottish descent, was born in Memel in East Prussia. After gaining his Master's degree with the present work, he travelled to Hamburg and then, with his expanded book-length thesis to recommend him, on to England. After his return to the continent in 1719 he lectured in Kiel before embarking on a career as a preacher in Holstein, Stockholm, and Uppsala (cf. Jöcher/A.). - Murray's extensive handwritten revisions, as indeed the printed text, are in Latin with occasional interspersions in Greek and Hebrew. Somewhat browned throughout due to paper, but a charming survival. VD 18, 1039186X. Jöcher/A. V, 224f., 1. OCLC 47167605.
