1812K7BC7632IMESKiel 1812. 4to. Königlichen Schulbuchdruckerei printed by C.L. Wäser Contemporary half calf gold-tooled spine black spine label. With 6 engraved folding plates 3 partly handcoloured. xii 335 1 pp. Rare first edition of a botanical classic the principal work of Johann Moldenhawer published in 1812. This copy was part of the collection of the famous German botanist and explorer of Brazil Philipp von Martius 1794-1868 as the book-plate on the front pastedown shows. The Beyträge reflects the knowledge acquired in the field of plant anatomy during the period 1800-1812 when many new texts on the structure of plant organs were published and Moldenhawer made advances in his own research. This book contains important findings concerning plant anatomy based on Moldenhawer's own experiments where he isolated the cells and the vessels. By completely isolating the cells and vessels in his preparations Moldenhawer demonstrated that the cell wall is closed on all sides. Moldenhawers Beiträge zur Anatomie der Pflanzen the result of eighteen years of unremitting research on plant anatomy reflects his critical insights and methodical observations both in his own experiments and in his analysis of earlier and contemporary research on plant anatomy by others. This makes it a classic overview of the history of plant anatomy. With the bookplate of the explorer Philipp von Martius on the front paste-down. Bound in contemporary French calf with gilt spine and with the exception of some insignificant marginal worming in a couple of signatures a very fine copy. Sabin 47511; Wroth American Bookshelf p. 22; Lande 657; TPL 250; Streeter II 1013; Echeverria & Wilkie 756/29. Writing in The John Carter Brown Library Report 1946 pp. 48-49 Lawrence Wroth notes that this is "one of the most important diplomatic documents in American colonial history . in which the French government is justifying its position as a contestant in the French and Indian War. Printed amongst other pertinent documents is Washington's captured journal of the Fort Necessity campaign and spread upon the record the articles of surrender in which the young provincal leader accepted the enemy's designation of the killing of Jumonville as an assassination." Sabin notes "From the evidence drawn from these documents they charge Washington with the murder of Jumonville. The memoirs prove that Jumonville was approaching Washington on an embassy of peace but that Washington unwilling to trust him ordered his advance to be fired upon." The Dictionary of Amercian History in discussing this same battle at Great Meadows near Unionville PA in April of 1754 asserts that Washington learned of the small force of French camped a few miles north of Fort Necessity and after a night march attacked them soon after sunrise killing ten including their commander Jumonville. This was Washington's first battle and the first engagement of the French and Indian War. After Washington's return to Fort Necessity he was attacked by 500 French and 400 Indians eventually capitulating and marching back to Virginia on foot. L'Imprimerie Royale unknown books

Engraved title page. Fascinating work on the Jewish calendar its estimation calculation of the New Moon methods of chronology et.al. Also contains a few pages on the Christian calendar. This work is one of the most profusely illustrated works of Hebraica and Judaica with charts ephemerides sketches and illustrations throughout. One volvell attached. In Hebrew. First ten leaves with one inch holes from bookworms. The rest of the volome with minor circular bookworm hole. Some loss of text on first ten leaves. "The volvelles as well as hand diagrams and tables were some of the tools used not just for calculating and identifying pivotal dates and worshipping times for Jews but also for ascertaining Christan holidays. This knowledge was a critical aid for protecting Jews from the danger posed by their having different worshipping times and habits from the dominant culture. The headings on the wheel denote the arrival of the new moon which marks the start of the Jewish month and the cycle of the sun. Whereas calendars appear in general to be a “convenient way to coordinate human movements with natural time†as Elisheva Carlebach points out the Sefer ‘Evronot demonstrates that the methods for doing so are culturally and historically shaped. The wheel computing information with each push of a finger demands interaction from the reader in order to yield knowledge not just to use but to live by." Ellistone which reveals the hidden connections between the material and spiritual worlds through its exploration of the signatures imprinted on all of creation.

At once leatherworker mystic and founder of modern theosophy Böhme published little in his lifetime and what was published brought him endless trouble with the Church. Despite this Böhme had a profound influence on later philosophical movements such as German Idealism and German Romanticism with Hegel describing him as "the first German philosopher". Böhme was born in Alt Seidenberg now in present-day Poland. Deemed too weak for husbandry Böhme was sent to Seidenberg as an apprentice to become a shoemaker. While he lived with a family who was not Christian Böhme regularly prayed and read the Bible and consumed the works of visionaries such as Paracelsus Weigel and Schwenckfeld. After leaving his apprenticeship Böhme travelled as far as Görlitz before returning as a master craftsman to set up his own workshop and started a family. Böhme later joined the "Conventicle of God's Real Servants" - a parochial study group organized by poet and mystic Martin Moller. Since his youth Böhme often had spiritual experiences including one that occurred while he was travelling for business where as he later recalled was "surrounded with a divine light and stood in the highest contemplation and kingdom of joys." This title The Signature of All Things written in High Dutch in 1622 following a series of Böhme's mystic experiences appears here in the first English edition. In it Böhme explains systematically the cosmology that lies at the heart of his whole mystical approach and experience revealing his mystical pantheism and his dialectical conception of God in which good and evil are rooted in one and the same being. The book is a highly symbolic work that deals with the nature of God creation and the relationship between the spiritual and physical worlds. In brief Böhme's thesis can be summarised thus: everything in the material world bears the imprint or "signature" of its spiritual counterpart and that by understanding these signatures one can gain insight into the divine. The present work is the title for which Böhme is most famous and it is invoked by James Joyce in the Proteus episode in Ulysses "Ineluctable modality of the visible." Bohme's ideas had a significant influence on later mystics philosophers and theologians including Goethe Nietzsche and Jung. Signatura Rerum remains a classic work of Christian mysticism and esoteric philosophy and is still studied and debated by scholars and practitioners today.

Wing B3419; Bach "Jacob Boehme" in Protestants and Mysticism in Reformation Europe; Hartman The Life and the Doctrines of Jacob Boehme the God-Taught Philosopher.
