Quarto three volumes bound as one 4 A-S 5-172 pages with 2 large double-sided folding maps; 4 A-K 3-192 pages with 2 large double-sided folding maps plus a leaf of advertisements for White Star Line steamers; and 4 A-C Ca-Cb D-G 3-192 pages with 2 large double-sided folding maps. The original full-colour wrappers and three-colour maps are included in the pagination. Early half leather and marbled papered boards later rebacked with cloth retaining most of the original backstrip; new endpapers; leather corners and original backstrip a little worn; acidic paper a little tanned and brittle with insignificant short tears to some edges; text at the foot of the wrappers slightly shaved when rebound; rear wrapper of the third time table a little soiled with an old tape repair; overall in excellent condition. The foot of the retained backstrip is stamped in gilt 'Supt. Superintendent of Line'; this might explain why these three handsome Edwardian time tables from the heyday of the London and South Western Railway are in such wonderful shape. Laid in loose are 1 5.5 x 9.5-inch cyanotype photo print of a locomotive works and 1 vintage 6 x 8.5-inch silver print photograph of a coal-fired locomotive and crew. Also laid in is a typed letter dated San Francisco July 3 1929 signed J. N. Clark to Mr. O. B. Schoenky presenting this album. Dated ink stamp recording receipt of Southern Pacific Co. Los Angeles Cal. July 5 1929 at top of sheet. Both sender and recipient are pictured in the management portraits portion of the album. 1889331Chicago: Poole Bros 1889. Very good. Folding pamphlet with 14 panels approximately 13 x 24 inches unfolded. A few very short separations along folds. Light tanning. Scarce pamphlet promoting lands available along the route of the Burlington and Missouri Railroad and associated lines in Colorado and Nebraska in the late 1880s. According to the text of the publication "Public lands are melting away" and it goes on to describe several counties in Nebraska including Thomas Hooker Grant Sheridan Box Butte and Sioux Counties which can be accessed via the Burlington Route. The areas advertised in Eastern Colorado are described as the "rain belt" of the state where "Irrigation is absolutely unnecessary." The reverse of the pamphlet prints a map of the rail lines west from Omaha and Missouri across Nebraska to Colorado with the areas of available land shaded in pink. Large imposing broadside printed in a variety of type fonts for the historic Canadian railway the first to be chartered in the province of Canada West today Ontario in 1834. From Monday 14th May 1877 Until Further Notice.<br /> <br /> Includes the Toronto Line and US stops New York Boston Albany Buffalo Suspension Bridge over Niagara Falls Detroit and Chicago.<br /> <br /> Schedules printed for the Loop Line; Toronto Line; Wellington Grey & Bruce Division; W. G. & B. South Extension; London Huron & Bruce Division; London and Port Stanley Division; and Sarnia Division. <br /> <br /> The Superintendent is Chas. Stiff; F. Broughton General Manager. Frederick Broughton severely cut costs at the railroad as a result of the 1873 financial crash; he was feared and hated within the company but managed to turn the Great Western into one of the best run railways of North America. <br /> <br /> At its peak the Great Western system covered 852 miles with its main operating base in Hamilton. The GWR's role as a bridge line between the New York Central and Michigan Central Railroads was highly profitable.<br /> <br /> Large printed sheet 17 1/2 x 25 1/2". 3999S.l.:: The Railroad: Printed by F. P. Hoeck in Mexico City. Six halftones; the letterpress includes a time table and a description of a journey through the fruit lands. Single sheet printed in green on both sides 7 5/8 21 inches accordion folded into six panels 7 5/8 3 1/2 inches. No other copy located. Dating of this brochure. The railroad operated from 1898 until 1945; it was nationalized by the Mexican Government in 1925. The owner of record was Louis T. Haggin the son of American mogul James Ben Ali Haggin who was a great friend and business associate of the railroad’s General Manager the colorful Gen. John Baptist Frisbie. Frisbie died in 1909; the General Manager listed on this pamphlet is his son Luis Platon Frisbie. However William K. Boone’s Wikipedia entry states that he was the General Manager from 1909 to 1926 “except for a few times during the Mexican Revolution 1910–1920 when he had to seek refuge in the American Embassy at Mexico City and move temporarily to the US fearing that his life was at stakeâ€. The latest citation to the printer F.P. Hoeck that we could find was 1907. H. T. Greene the Traffic Manager was active in the late 1800s and as that as the early 1900s. This pamphlet relates to a bond offering maturing in 43 years the company was issuing to raise capital. The funds would be used to complete the railroad's connecting systems. Included is typical financial data supplied with these offerings from a report by the chief engineer. Railroad bonds were a popular investment during the second half of the 19th century which helped prompt Henry Varnum Poor to publish his "History of Railroads and Canals in the United States" in 1860. This work enabled investors to see comprehensive financial information on just about all railroad companies. This pamphlet includes a very nice folding map of "The Saint Paul and Chicago Railway.".
