191960653New York San Francisco CA Portland & Baker OR Coeur d’Alene ID & Seattle WA: American Railway Express Co. Railway Express Agency Co. Washington-Alaska-Yukon Division Pacific-Mountain Division 1919-1965. Archive with over 100 separate pieces. Approx. 1400 pp sections leaves individual items paginated & unpaginated numbered & unnumbered sections separately and more printed on assorted paper stocks many w/ colour-tinting. Individual items largely all sleeved in mylar and preserved in 3-ring binders some items in their original bindings as found including large Folio sample catalogue which is an original re-purposing of a large Christmas greeting card catalogue as well as others in their original post-binders softcovers or more detailed list available upon request. This informative archive of sales literature and in-house forms documents and publications for the Western and Pacific Divisions of the storied Railway Express Co. whose Big Green trucks with the red emblems shipped a valuable package or money anywhere in the world prior to the 1970’s. They specialized in efficiently shipping daily thousands of perishables fragile items and things the customer wished picked up at their home and then traveling across the company’s vast rail network to San Francisco Toledo Bremerhaven Germany Okinawa Japan and further. This material documents the period of transition by the American Railway Express Co. which had been formed during World War I by combining the Great Northern Express Northern Express Western Express Adams Express American Express Wells Fargo and Southern Express into one giant company. In 1929 69 U.S. railroads organized the Railway Express Agency and purchased the American Railway Express Co. and its’ vast network to be all folded into the same company with each of the railroads owning 1000 shares of stock. This archive encompasses all of the labels forms documents and sales literature in order to train operate and thrive as a Railway Express Agent. Not only do the labels and documents specifically detail how to pack the railcars and trucks make claims on damaged materials they even include specific items such as 21 mostly originally sealed safe combinations & keys originally held and secured by the Money Dept. of the Railway Express Agency. Two “Record of Personal Property†logs document the sales of obsolete equipment surplus horses carriages wagons motorized trucks and railcars from the Nampa ID depot. Also present is a fascinating receipt book still preserving all the original 50 Foreign Money Orders sent as remittances from 1946-1957 by immigrants co-workers aid workers as well as family and friends many with original TLS and ALS receipts associated with the original senders. The 1919 “Route Directory†provides very scarce original documentation of the network of depots operated by the Express Company across Idaho Montana Oregon & Washington during and just after World War I when the business was in the transition towards the American Railway Express Co. many of the rail stations no longer operable or in existence. The sales promotion and development in-house magazines flyers and bulletins all offer essential tips on how agents during the Great Depression and beyond could raise sales and cultivate their promotional campaigns. They encouraged regular meetings elevating their “Live Wires†to lead with rousing sales pitches and promoting methods on raising the company’s presence in the “Private House Market†as well as “Selective selling for the Summer slump.†In addition there are small broadsides flyers and tips on advising how to ship baby chicks bees taking care that bee hives arrive intact and ready for use shipping apples & pears from Oregon Washington Idaho & Montana farmers and packing houses as well as handling fragile glass packages. It is very apparent when reading through all of the material that the American Railway Express followed by the Railway Express ran a very tight ship with active auditing departments specific forms for nearly everything and very tight controls over who could enter and operate within their secure shipping railcars. Almost none of these original labels documents periodicals or other in-house publications appear in any institutional collections; Worldcat locates a few similar titles from the 1940’s through 1950’s at Stanford Univ. of Missouri St. Louis Northwestern and the Hagley. After completing the Central Pacific line from California to Utah in 1869 the four partners started the Southern Pacific as a branch line into southern California. It was incorporated in 1884 and the railroads making up the Central Pacific system were leased to the Southern Pacific Co. the following year. A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of chapter seven, The Crisis of 1878, of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This feature of 16 pages includes photos of: the company's tank farm at Olean, NY; John L. McKinney; Torpedoed oil wells with side-flow and upright flow; A.J. Cassatt; M.N. Allen; a 25,000 oil tank on fire; and a one-page illustration of the hanging in effigy of "Buck" McCandless. With this work, Tarbell invented what we know today as investigative journalism. She was motivated to expose the methods of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil as she felt he had unfairly damaged her father's oil business. The New York University Department of Journalism ranked this study as the fifth best work of 20th-century American journalism. Also contained in this issue is a most scathing 15-page photo-illustrated article on the corruption pervasive in Pittsburgh, PA. Also included is a 9-page article entitled Waifs of the (New York) Street which describes, with illustrations, the heart-breaking life of children forced to work as 'newsboys, peddlers, messengers, and bootblacks that swarm by day and night through every crowded street of busy New York.' Binding intact. Unmarked. Above-average wear. This copy lacks: covers; backstrip; pages 1-2 (title page and first half of table of contents); Advertising pages 133-136. Book

187742208St. Louis: A. Gast & Co. Lith. 1877. 1877. IOWA NEBRASKA. First edition. 8vo. 21.6 cm x 13.3 cm. Original printed yellow wrappers 31 1 pp. illustrated from two full-page pictorial plates three maps on verso of front cover and recto and verso of rear cover. Front map is of the great South Platte region. Map on inside rear cover is a map of Southern Iowa showing lands of the Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Company that are available for sale Map on outside of rear cover is a map showing the leading through routes to the West and the land grants in Iowa & Nebraska of the Chicago Burlington and Quincy R. R. and Burlington & Missouri River Railroad in Nebraska. A scarce and interesting promotional for the sale of 1000000 acres of land owned along the routes of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad. The Burlington and Missouri put out some of the most interesting and compelling railroad land promotionals in the genre nicely illustrated with maps and plates and this example is no exception. The maps show the lands for sale along the line of the railroad from Monroe Iowa to Omaha; lands in Nebraska from Omaha to Kearney along the South Platte; and a map showing railroad routes from Chicago. The plates are entitled "Looking Southwest from Lincoln Neb." and "Valley of the Big Blue South of Seward Neb." The text is devoted to detailed descriptions of the land including natural resources soil climate stock raising and homesteading opportunities and prices for land and for goods. This publication enjoyed some success; another promotional issued the next year advertised only 750000 acres of land left for sale indicating that the Burlington and Missouri had sold off a quarter million acres of land the previous year. Laid into this copy is a four-page "Circular of Rates on Tickets and Freight" for several railroads including the Burlington & Missouri. Not in Railway Economics nor in the Eberstadt or Decker catalogues. OCLC locates three copies at the American Antiquarian Society Harvard Business School Library and the DeGolyer Library. There is also a copy at Yale. This scarce promotional booklet has covers lightly soiled small chips to the covers covers holding but loose internally quite serviceable. Overall a very good copy. A. Gast & Co. Lith., [1877]. unknown

An application to Congress by the Northern Pacific Railroad headed by Minnesota railroad magnate James J. Hill for federal aid to support the Railroad's expansion to the West Coast. The petition reviews the railroad's original charter and includes an impressive color folding map "Map of the Country from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean" which illustrates the railroad's route from Duluth to Seattle and Portland. This map was originally produced to accompany Edwin Johnson's report on the feasibility of the railroad. This is one of the finest maps of the region traversed to be issued up to this time and was produced by Colton in New York not by the government. Wheat devotes several pages to discussing it noting that "the detail of such a map defies cataloging." Above the map appears an elevation chart for the same distance. <br> <br> A fine account of railroad expansion in the Northwest. Rare. Not on OCLC. MIDLAND NOTES 68-164. 1917156891Dalian: Minami manshu tetsudo 1917. A rare guide to the South Manchuria Railway with 13 well-preserved maps First edition first printing of this scarce and profusely illustrated handbook for business and tourist travellers on the South Manchuria Railway the economic powerhouse of Japan's East Asian empire. WorldCat records only three copies all in Japanese institutions. The South Manchuria Railway Company was founded in 1906 under the direction of Goto Shinpei 1857-1929 to manage railway lines seized from Russia in the wake of the Russo-Japanese War. By the end of 1907 it already had 9000 Japanese and 4000 Chinese employees and during its first decade of operations the company invested in a range of industries including coal mining including the major mine at Fushun natural gas extraction shipping and hotels and hospitality. In 1917 the company took over management of the entire railway network in Japanese-controlled Korea cementing its position as the backbone of Japan's imperial expansion between the wars. This guide focuses on major stops along the railway including Dalian Fengtian Changchun and Yingkou together with descriptions of and directions to notable visiting spots. The maps and plans show the extent of the network the layout of important destination cities and the course of key battles in the Russo-Japanese war. A selection of the plates stress the vibrancy of Japanese economic development. Octavo. This amazing photo archive chronicles the bridge removal and construction coffer dam building foundation work and construction project on the Lower Maumee River Bridge for the Toledo Terminal Railroad by The Foundation Company of Pittsburgh & New York. The Toledo Terminal Railroad was completed in 1903 and at one time owned by most of the major railroads that passed through Toledo forming a loop around the city providing an essential link to all of the industrial factories around the city. The Lower Maumee River Bridge was originally erected in 1902-1903 as a single track truss bridge but by the Roaring 20s needed a major upgrade to double-track. These images show in reverse order the construction of additional piers building of coffer dams massive cranes installed to remove the old trusses and install new trusses as well as build the swing span. Along with photos of the control systems the entire intricate process of removing the original single span and installing the double-track trusses is depicted as well as the new swing span in operation. The Foundation Co. was founded in 1900 by Remington Jarrett and Moran and grew rapidly in the opening decades of the 20th century often securing numerous large projects including the building of several dams on the Ohio River to offset flooding railroad bridges and more. It should be noted that the MichiganRailroad project Bridge Hunter and several other references list this still existing and operational railroad bridge as having been constructed in 1902-1903 as double-track but these images clearly show the massive three-year project replacing the original from 1927-1930.
