218647Late Meiji. This collection of Japanese copperplate engravings comprises over 325 neatly trimmed and mounted prints meticulously arranged in two Japanese scrapbooks. These engravings are copies of 19th-century Western images recreated by a Japanese artist/s as evidenced by the occasional East Asian aesthetic influence on the landscapes. Most plates are captioned in Japanese with a few including the odd word in English. While many impressions are dark the earlier album features several lighter prints. The collection also includes the names of two publishers.

The copperplate engravings are overall in very good condition with only occasional light damage. The backing leaves and covers show slight browning and the thin card wrappers exhibit some minor signs of wear but the albums remain in excellent condition. This charming and unusual pair of albums serves as a fascinating demonstration of Japan’s interest in the wider world during the late Meiji period reflecting the cultural exchange and curiosity of the era. The compiler of these images clearly was interested in Indigenous peoples of the world with a strong representation of these people including two of Australian Aboriginal people. Another Australian print shows Sydney from Circular Quay across to North Sydney and a fourth Australian wildlife. City views include Philadelphia and Washington. . unknown
