17042202
48 378 12 pp. With an engraved frontispiece.

Contemporary mottled calf with ribbed and gold-tooled spine sprinkled edges.

Rare first and only edition of a peculiar and polemical work which uses a female abecedarium to attack Catholic invective against women. Arranged alphabetically—from Avidum animal to Zelus Zelotipus—the author ironically surveys women's wit eloquence moral qualities and physical appearance combining satire polemic and learned rhetoric. The book also offers insight into early-eighteenth-century Protestant debates on marriage gender and Catholic religious culture.
The author was an Amsterdam merchant and former Catholic priest who converted to Calvinism and became known for his vehemently anti-Catholic writings often directed against monastic life and clerical celibacy. Zeege-pralende lof-tooneel der vrouwelyke sexe must be read within this broader religious and ideological agenda: Johannes Mauritius presents Catholic denunciations of women as a deliberate strategy employed by "the Papists" to justify the prohibition of marriage and to lure men into the cloister. He was the father of the prodigy poet jurist and later Suriname governor Joan Jacob Mauricius 1692–1768 whose early intellectual development was shaped by his father's militant anti-Catholicism and literary ambitions.

Condition: corners slightly bumped front joint splitting. 1946483421946. Fine. 1946 21.70 x 11.50 cm 7 feuillets foliotés Autograph manuscript by the author 14 pages in octavo published in issue no. 12 December 1945January 1946 of L'Arche. A complete recto-verso manuscript in a densely written hand with numerous deletions corrections and additions. Essay published on the occasion of the release of Father du Lubacs Le Drame de lhumanisme athée. After the war the place of Friedrich Nietzschealongside the Marquis de Sade and Søren Kierkegaardin Maurice Blanchots thought reflects the decisive influence of Georges Bataille and the philosophers he held in highest regard. From this point on Blanchot devoted many texts to these figures and Du côté de Nietzsche stands as a key testimony of that engagement. The very title of his forthcoming collection La Part du feu to be published in 1949 including this article in a slightly revised form is itself a Bataillean reference. For Blanchot Nietzsches power through his use of language and style lies less in his most explicit and oft-commented theses than in the crucible of a more fluid and sometimes self-contradictory discourse: « L'influence de Nietzsche ne se réduit pas aux formes extérieures qu'elle a prises ; c'est probablement au contraire ce qui de Nietzsche a échappé à toute transmission manifeste cette part de lui étrangère aux influences directes qui a exercé l'influence la plus profonde. » This idea would remain central to Blanchots reading of the German philosopher. Nietzsches inconsistency and ambiguity are embodied in the theme of the death of God central to his work: « En aucune façon le thème de la Mort de Dieu ne peut être l'expression d'un savoir définitif ou l'esquisse d'une proposition stable » Blanchot observes. And he famously adds: « Se contredire est le mouvement essentiel d'une telle pensée. » In LEntretien infini 1969 Blanchot would once again revisit the Nietzschean question of the death of God where it meets that of the unity of man. A remarkable text by Maurice Blanchot on Friedrich Nietzsche illustrating the profound influence of Georges Bataille on his thought. unknown

192686618Montfort l'Amaury 1926. Fine. ""Pas le temps de bien entendre les mélodies grecques qu'il interprétera aussi bien sans mes indications d'ailleurs"" ""No time to properly hear the Greek melodies which he will interpret just as well without my indications anyway"" Montfort l'Amaury 9 novembre 1926 13.50 x 10.40 cm une page Autograph letter dated and signed by Maurice Ravel 2 pages on a cardboard note with letterhead bearing his monogram and his address ""Le Belvédère Montfort l'Amaury S.& O."" The composer preparing to leave for Switzerland puts his affairs in order and addresses various directives to his correspondent. The year 1926 had seen the birth in Paris of l'Enfant et les Sortilèges his celebrated lyrical fantasy on a text by Colette. Ravel receives ""une lettre de Bochie"" ""a letter from Bochie"" - patriotism never being far away! - and recommends one of the airs from his work: ""Je sais qu'on m'y demande des mélodies pour une Koloratur soprano l'air du Feu s'impose"" ""I know that they are asking me for melodies for a Koloratur soprano the Fire's aria is essential"" . ""S'il y faut de la dédicace on la remettra à mon retour"" ""If a dedication is needed it will be done upon my return"". He peppers his note with some humorous touches: ""2 reçus que j'ai oublié de laisser hier au bureau car je n'y étais pas passé uniquement pour l'apéro"" ""2 receipts that I forgot to leave yesterday at the office since I hadn't gone there solely for the aperitif""; ""une lettre du Courrier Musical : s'il n'y avaient pas ajouté un timbre je ne vous aurais même pas prié de leur répondre"" ""a letter from Courrier Musical: if they hadn't added a stamp I wouldn't even have asked you to reply to them"". I believe that Warnery is coming to the office in November and I will ask you to ask him too whether it is useful for me to send to the directors in Geneva. Please ask him to excuse me it's frightening what I have to do before my departure. No time to properly hear the Greek melodies which he will interpret just as well without my indications anyway"". Charming and aesthetic letter from the composer featuring important compositions for voice and orchestra. unknown
