0083351880. Near Fine. 13 handwritten letters to Pennsylvania Representative William Ward. There are two topics addressed by these letters. One topic is who Ward will recommend for a position with the Internal Revenue under James Ashworth 1836-1882 a Philadelphian who had been a captain during the Civil War and as an Internal Revenue official favored appointing an ex-soldier from his district for the position. The other topic is local support for Ward running for the Republican nomination for Senate in 1881. John I. Mitchell was the ultimate Republican candidate; he won against the sitting Democrat William A. Wallace. William Ward 1837-1895 was born in Philadelphia and attended Girard College the boarding school established by Stephen Girard 1750-1831 for poor white male orphans. Ward learned printing while working at the Delaware County Republican in Chester Pa. and then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1859. He later served on the Chester City Council and represented Pennsylvania's 6th District in Congress from 1877 to 1883. He married Clara Ecker Ulrich 1837-1916 and they had six children including son William Ward Jr. 1865-1949 who served in the Pennslvania House from 1901 to 1911 and as mayor of Chester from 1911 to 1915 and again in the 1930s. The letters are signed by Thomas N. Cooper James Ashworth and Henry C. Snowden among others. In Near Fine Condition: minimal soiling; light creasing. unknown

Boussod Valadon & Cie Paris s. d. 1889 41 x 59 cm en feuilles sous portefeuille de l'éditeur First and only edition published of this remarkable set of 15 original lithographs from the post-impressionist painter George William Thornley only 100 copies printed. Publisher's portfolio bound in boards very skilfully restored. 14 of the 15 lithographs are printed in colour black blue green mauve and different browns on broadside China paper laid on pale blue thick paper one is directly printed on thick paper. All except the last bear the stamp of Thornley's signature with the words Chez Mrs Boussod & Valadon 19 Bd Montmartre and Imp. Becquet frères à Paris. In 1888 George William Thornley was commissioned to produce a series of lithographs based on the works of Degas. These lithographs go well beyond the reproduction quality of the renowned publisher. They also demonstrate the high level of collaboration between Degas and Thornley. Thornley first selected the works to publish made the necessary changes in the preparatory drawings and even interrupted the printing at times so that improvements could be made. The importance of Thornley's engravings in Degas' work is particularly highlighted by the book dedicated to Degas by JS Boggs and published by the Metropolitan Museum of New York; a publication in which we find several of the engravings presented in the collection. Chantal and Guy Heytens We have only identified two copies in libraries: one in the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the other in the Institut national d'histoire de l'art. 1505000423bGENOA ITALY. Good with no dust jacket. 1505. Original Vellum. One hundred and eighty four hand numbered pages in this remarkable 500 year old handwritten manuscript ledger journal and diary : " 1505 Gendenze di Saviz - gnano" as stated on the cover. The first page begins: "Libro de tuto _____ quale so tato asan__giano ala venuta mia. To Alexandro salueto schrise e soto schrise de mia gnovia mar." Not written by a scribe this is a working journal and ledger containing hundreds of business entries purchases loans and repayments. There are long lists of foods and prices for what is assuredly shopping lists for parties and feasts. There are also what appears to be observations and business maxims and poetry in a number of entries. Certainly this fascinating book requires more research. The original vellum cover is in somewhat rough shape with tears rubbing and bumping and is barely attached to the text block though still held by the rear binding cords. Interior is in excellent shape save for the odd and to be expected ink blot age-toning and light soiling. 15250001371LOMBARDY ITALY. Good. 1525. Original Vellum. On offer is an ancient very charming and even beautiful manuscript relic of early civil law and legal procedure bound in vellum being the "Corpus Iuris Civilis of Justinian" the Digesta Digests or Pandects Books 1 through 38 in condensed form. All titular headings from 1.1.0 through 38.17.0 with each followed by an abbreviated explanation of the premise. In some instances may also have portions of subsections such as 1.5.6. The text does not contain the elaborations of Ulpianus Pomponius Florentinus or their like. Justinian the Great "Justice is the constant and perpetual wish to render to everyone his due" was the Roman Emperor of Byzantine Constantinople from 527 to 565. He was the last Roman Emperor to speak Latin as his first language. He tried to revive the greatness of the empire by reconquering the lost western half of the classical Roman Empire achieving only partial success in this although he did retake the city of Rome. But probably his most enduring legacy was the uniform rewriting of Roman law the Corpus Iuris Civilis which is still the basis for much civil law in many modern states and with which this volume is concerned. Dated October 30 1525 handwritten in one humanist hand this version appears to be a synopsis of the first 38 books of the Digesta and may have been used as a primer for a law student or as is more likely in this case given the marginalia a reference by a civil authority such as a lawyer or civil magistrate. On the spine is the word "Castaldus". Castaldus Gastaldo in Italian was also a term for a Lombardy official in charge of some portion of a demesne a gastaldia or castaldia with civil martial and juridical powers. When Lombardy submitted to a codified Roman law the term came to be used as a reference for civil magisterial matters. Another possiblility is this was owned by a Restaurus Castaldus an Italian civil lawyer d. 1564 and known to be the author of published book: "De imperatore in Tractatus universi iuris" or this book may possibly be a redaction or some other volume of the same Castaldus by another hand. This book offers a wonderful research opportunity for the right researcher! Description: CASTALDUS 1525 Italy. Cover of limp vellum 148x 119x 20mm Held by two leather straps through the spine to under the covers. Small section of cover on spine is missing. 124 leaves of linen rag paper 140 x105mm the first and last blank. 122 paginated folios; 1-109 CX-CXXII. Collation; i I 1313 a singleton II16 III15 39 a singleton IV15 51 a singleton V16 VI15 90 a singleton VII16 i. COMPLETE. 243 pages of text. Dated on recto of f.CXXII October 30 1525 verso blank. The pages have 15 lines in brown ink written in an elegant Humanist Bookhand with italic traits a few initials with minor flourishes near the beginning and marginal notations. Folios 73-79 some ink smear from damp stain f.74-75 stuck together in center toward spine. Folios 107-CXXII with spill stain over one half of page. In all instances the text is legible. The book is in unusually good condition for it's nearly five hundred years of life although it naturally shows appropriate signs of age and use and there is some brittleness to the cover. 1555000865Dégagnac France Lot. Very Good. 1555. On offer is a fascinating handwritten medieval French manuscript book earliest date 1555 with entries through 1597 in original blindstamped calf with small Fleur-de-lis. This stunning book has approximately 300 pages of handwritten entries being a register of acts properties transactions loans personal notes and journal entries the majority concerning Marc-Antoine Hébrart a noted merchant in the village of Dégagnac in Lot in south-western France. Most certainly Jewish it is evident that the Hebrart family was one of the largest land-holding families in the area. "In 1504 and 1505 the two "headmen" of the village Antoine Hebrart and Pierre Peysson together accounted for 15 percent of the land of the village" Ref: By Le Roy Emmanuel and Ladurie John Day The Peasants of Languedoc . A pencil annotation indicates that Marc Hébrard was of Jewish origin. A fairly cursory examination of the manuscript lends no additional support to this assertion but it is possible given the history of the Jews of neighboring Languedoc and the fact that some Jews remained in France under Christian-like assumed names after their expulsion in 1306. The generic 'Marc-Antoine' is cited as a Jewish name in Sara Uckelman's "Jewish Given Names Found in "Les Noms Des Israélites en France." 160300JT20NParis France 1603. On offer is an ancient very interesting medieval French document that ends a 26 year long legal battle. Deliberated in Paris in 1603 the document ends with three affixed signatures of the members of a council formed in June of 1577. The document states the problems between various individuals and the resultant end with the status of revenues and properties. This document is written in middle-French that lists names of various noble families. Much is left unsaid but given the use of the language and mention of nobility this may possibility be an establishment of estates or other revenues. Certainly an ancient work worthy of further research. Manuscript. Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Paperback
16500002034Paris FRANCE. Very Good. 1650. Full-Leather. On offer is a simply superb ancient mid 17th Century manuscript book titled "Suitte du memorial on recueil de l'histoire de France Louis treizeime" an epic 750 page handwritten history of the reign of Louis XIII from the condemnation of his father's assassination in 1610 to his own death in 1643. The work written in what is likely a 16th Century French monastic or ecclesiastical style hand was created after the death of Louis XIII and in its writing shows the foundations laid for a clear path to domination of France by Louis XIV. The book appears to be an unpublished final manuscript prepared for publication as there are corrections and marginalia notes. The front pastedown boasts a contemporary Parisian ownership inscription to the top left and then centered below is the bookplate of John Smith Budgen Esq. The 23 x 16 cm. book has 377 hand numbered leaves with writing on both sides of the leaf for over 750 pages. 16810001028EDINBURGH SCOTLAND. Very Good. 1681. Unbound. On offer is an excellent skin charter being a land grant from Charles II to well-noted jurist James Dalrymple 1st Viscount of Stair Scotland with mentions the Dukes of Rothes and Lauderdale who were also prominent Scotsmen. Dalrymple was famed not only for his legal judgments but also he was a prominent character in Scotland's history having been involved in the negotiations between Charles and the Scottish Parliament. This grant was given at Edinburgh on the 10th of December 1680 absent of seals. There is another note on the back of the parchment to say that the charter was written at Edinburgh on the second of March 1681 suggesting the deal was struck in December but that the charter was not actually drawn up until the next March. Historically the Charters falls squarely between the Restoration period and when he was prominent until his sympathy with the Covenanters at the time of the Scottish Test Act caused him to lose 1681 his appointment as judge. The note giving March as the date for the writing of the charter appears to be in the same hand as the charter itself. Dalyrymple was a fascinating Scotsman who found himself on one side or the other of the Scottish-English political scene but was well considered. Sir Walter Scott observe that the Viscount of Stair was fortunate in his descendants. "The family of Dalrymple produced within two centuries as many men of talent civil and military of literary political and professional eminence as any house in Scotland." Folded to a small 12mo. 16850002369England. Fair. 1685. On offer is an original fascinating though flawed historically significant ancient 1685 manuscript. Dated and signed February 10th 1685 handwritten a mere four days after the death of Charles II referencing the new king James II two months prior to his coronation at Westminster Abbey by and for the British Royal Postal Service being a Royal warrant and division of financial profits of the British post office to Prince George among other notables. The 44 page document begins: "Our Will And Pleasure Is That You Prepare A Bill For Our Royall Signature To Pass Our Great Seale Of England in the words or to the effect following James the Second and to all to whom these presents shall come Greetings. Whereas in pursuance of and according to a . Covenant and agreement I will part in accordance articles relating to the marriage and solemnized between our dearly beloved son in law Prince George hereditary of Denmark and our dearly beloved daughter Anne Princess of Denmark his wife for the selling of the yearly of 5000 pounds of lawful English money out of the and profit of the post office or general letter office of office of the post general and the yearly sum of 5000 pounds more of like money part of the 24000 pounds to pay ." Historians and researchers will agree this document superbly outlines the wheels of governance and greed patronage and politics will out as the new king doles out to his own and immediately showers those he favors with wealth. While the document has suffered in its 400 years having signs of old water damage chipping around the edges and someone's attempt at a repair with tape many many years ago the significance of the manuscript is divine given the year was monumentally important in British history: the death of Charles II; his brother Roman Catholic James Stuart Duke of York becomes King James II and his Coronation at Westminster Abbey; the Monmouth Rebellion; The Battle of Sedgemoor; the death of Monmouth and Elizabeth Gaunt who was burned at the stake at Tyburn for alleged complicity in the Rye House Plot and notably she is the last woman executed for political treason in England and much more. The last page with signatures is one of the more damaged and the top half in better shape but sadly the signatures are not legible as there is a one inch diameter fault likely from a seal. 16940001096ENTREVAUX FRANCE 1694. On offer is a superb manuscript letter dated 29th of September Entrevaux handwritten by the noted Captain de la Contardiere interesting letter on a variety of military subjects: the King's ordnances being stolen a Council of War a large number of maladies besetting the King's army issues with a particular Lieutenant Colonel in the Regiment etc. De la Contardiere is famous for his defense of Entrevaux in 1704. The historical background is fascinating: King Louis XIV of France having accepted the throne of Spain for his grandson Philippe of Anjou found himself in war against Austria England Holland and the Duchy of Savoy. These events are known as "The War of the Spanish Succession: 1701 to 1713". The army of the Duke of Savoy Victor-Amedee was mobilized to invade Provence. The garrisons of the forts of Entraunes and Rabbets in its possession were reinforced. The English fleet under Admiral Rook blocked Antibes preventing with the French reinforcements of the Le chevalier de Damas from returning to Entrevaux with artillery. Le chevalier de Blaignac with 1500 Savoyard troops and two fauconneaux small field guns went up the valley of Estéron and placed his seige at Entrevaux which was defended by a valorous soldier the Captain de la Contardiere a friend of Vauban the great expert on fortifications. The new fortifications which were not completely finished were to stand the test of fire on June 7 1704. The artillery of the fortress was not yet in place. The bourgeois garrison and militia had ten arquebuses with hooks in addition to the individual armament. The enemy army occupied the plateauxs of Pigière and Closes dominating Entrevaux. They did not have siege cannons as they were too heavy to be transferred onto the bad mountain lanes. On June 14 after one week of siege to relieve the pressure de la Contardiere decided to carry out a night attack which was a total success. A breach was opened in the palisade surrounding the Savoyard camp. The impetuous attack of the Entrevalais causes a rout of the enemies who although superior of number flew towards Seds. 8.5" x 7" overall VG. . Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
