A Fine bright copy.

Frederick Cayley Robinson 1862 - 1927 was an accomplished painter and illustrator. His painting The Death of Abel held at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris is considered his most enduring work. "This work was the source of an illustration for The Book of Genesis published by the Riccardi Press in 1914; together with another masterpiece The Death of Rachel it constitutes his finest achievement as a book illustrator" ODNB. Robinson's illustrations for The Book of Genesis epitomize his melancholy style which reflected the influence of both ornate art deco aesthetics and the somber clarity of the Symbolist movement. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. ESTC locates three sets: BL Newport Central and Washington State. HERBERT 1366. ESTC T95096. Printed for Bellamy and Roberts unknown books

Tajik is a general designation for a wide range of Persian-speaking people of Iranian origin with traditional homelands in present-day Tajikistan Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. As a self-designation the term Tajik which earlier on had been more or less pejorative has become acceptable only during the last several decades particularly as a result of Soviet administration in Central Asia. The Samanid Empire also known as the Samanid dynasty. The Samanid state was founded by four brothers; Nuh Ahmad Yahya and Ilyas-each of them ruled their own territory under Abbasid suzerainty. In 892 Isma'il ibn Ahmad 892-907 united the Samanid state under one ruler thus effectively putting an end to the feudal system used by the Samanids. It was also under him that the Samanids became independent of Abbasid authority. Emomali Rahmon born 5 October 1952 is a Tajik politician who has served as President of Tajikistan or its equivalent post since 1992. During the early years of his presidency Rahmon faced a civil war in which up to 100000 people died. In 2013 he was elected to a fourth term in office. In March 2007 Rahmonov changed his surname to Rahmon getting rid of the Russian-style "-ov" ending. Rahmon explained that he had done so out of respect for his cultural heritage. Following the move scores of governments officials members of parliament and civil servants around the country removed Russian-style patronymics and "-ov" endings from their surnames. Rahmon is a Sunni Muslim and he has frequently stressed his Muslim background even though his administration is engaged in a relentless campaign against public displays of Islamic devotion. During a 2010 Organisation of the Islamic Conference session hosted in Dushanbe Rahmon spoke against what he deemed was the misuse of Islam toward political ends claiming that "Terrorism terrorists have no nation no country no religion . Using the name 'Islamic terrorism' only discredits Islam and dishonors the pure and harmless religion of Islam." London River Editions Limited hardcover

Laid-in is an original photograph 20.5 x 16 cm. signed by the photographer "Thos. Tindall Hancock" the subject of the photo is presumably the compiler R.H. Murphy. ~ A "manuscript" cookbook with more than three hundred eighty recipes in ditto or mimeograph alternating blue or black ink many with holograph edits. Based on the style of edits textual and not culinary and the detailed Table of Contents it seems likely this was a compilation being prepared for publication. We have not however been able to identify a published work that corresponds with this text. After the nine page table of contents listing all the recipes there are three pages of miscellaneous remarks on cooking followed by sections on soups fish breakfast dishes joints and meats sweets and puddings iced sweets sweets and puddings and desserts again savouries vegetables sauces liquids juices and jams and cakes and breads. Desserts or sweets are the vast majority of recipes. Another section "Knitting and Miscellaneous" though referred to in the table of contents is missing. A range of recipes from various traditions is included spellings original: Mulligtawn soup palestine soup becamel of chicken Ketcherei with Finnan Haddock lobster a la Neuberg a breakfast cold chicken cream in aspic Neapolitan eggs hashed mutton beef galantine sardine fritters devils on horseback angels on horseback Welsh rabbit Mrs. Dunsmuir's Prize cake Sally Lunn Jessica's eggless cake a faroli souffle chocolate drops. Some recipes are labeled "War" likely wartime recipes which would at least provide an earliest date as during or post-WWI. Attributions are given for some recipes "Alice" "Gwen" "Francis" "Olivia" "Dorothy" "Margaret" "Jessica" "Mrs. Allen" "Dr. Lumsden" "Mrs. Freeman Plymouth" "Miss Fyfe" "Alice Monroe" "Mrs. Hall" "Nonnie Bennett" etc. The frequent use of first names indicates a casualness not seen in most earlier compilations. ~ In a brown pebbled cloth-covered spring-back binder gilt-titled on the front board. Some light soil to some text leaves and some closed tears to edges of interior folder. Light dusting to boards other wise very good. hardcover books

Whitehead's brother Philip was employed by the Bank of England from 1797 to 1810. During his employment at the Bank Philip Whitehead "adopted an extravagant lifestyle" and evidence came to light that he had defrauded Robarts & Co. by "forging an acceptance to a Bill." He was charged with forgery in 1811 and executed on 29 January 1812. The news of her brother's conviction was kept from his sister Sarah as long as possible. Learning of the execution Sarah Whitehead's mental health became unstable and she began to visit the Bank daily asking if Phillip was there. This continued until 1818 when the Directors offered Whitehead a financial grant on the condition that she stopped coming to the bank. Whitehead wore black crepe clothing which was a sign of mourning and as a result became known as the "Black Nun." To this day Whitehead's ghost reputedly haunts the Bank of England as well as the area on Threadneedle Street nearby. The myth of Whitehead's ghost appears in the poem New Year Letter by W. H. Auden. unknown
