184419364Philadelphia: Published at 23 N. Second st. 1844. First edition. Wrappers neatly reattached with archival clear tape repairs to the tears; wrappers soiled pamphlet somewhat roughly trimmed; in good sound condition. Original printed pictorial yellow wrappers scant 7 x 4 inches 24 pages. Illus. Out of the windows of nearly every Native American and Protestant Irishman in the district hung the American and tri-colored flags. This was regarded as sufficient protection from the mob. Upon some of the doors were observed the words 'Native American' written with charcoal and on others were posted the 'Native American' newspaper--regarding these as better protection than arms of the military. . . . During the afternoon hundreds of families of Catholics moved out of the district; and we observed women and children piled high up on furniture carts upon their goods apparently delighted to escape the scenes of turmoil and bloodshed which presented themselves to their eyes for the last three days." A supposedly non-partisan account of the first round of 1844 Nativist riots in Philadelphia though the Nativists come out rather better in this minute recounting of the riots than the "priest-ridden" Irish; the report drills down to specific incidents of violence and victims graphic accounts of the firing of the churches as well as a healthy dose of rumor and supposition which priests are stockpiling weapons etc. and altogether a full accounting of the violence leveled against Irish immigrants and Catholic properties over four days in May. The riots of July are not mentioned here. The pictorial wrappers include a wood engraving of "the American Flag Torn at a Meeting in Kensington" as well as crude views of the mobs watching the churches burn. A cursory search of the N. 2nd street address situated in the Old City in digitized Philadelphia newspapers and directories of the period did not yield up any particularly likely candidates for the pamphlet's publisher or distributor. The first three pages contain "Russell's Adventures" while page four is entitled: "The Beggar". and is "signed" Seeva Moody's property Longmeadow MA March 17 1811. Offered with a typescript of Russell's Adventures. This seems to all be in the same hand. The anonymous author of the first work notes that he was born in Merimac New Hampshire and relates a tale of sea fearing adventures battles won and lost; victories and being captured and tortured. "The first of my pranks was off the Mantanzirs When a French Privateer gave us battle one day At length she grew sick of the tricks of the yankees She brailed up her mizen and so bore away" And again: "The next time I fought was with Black man the pirate On board of the Princess all on the north sea One shot they so galled him our valour so palled him He shifted Helm and from us did flee"Later he is captures and torured before finally escaping and making it to Jamaica and finally home. A marvelous tale. The final page has 6 numbered verses about how we are all beggars from birth and 12 lines about youth and death/. unknown books

Edge rash to some leaves. One leaf detached. Overall VG. Photos generally clear & without significant wear: VG - VG. 25 leaves of black 'construction' mounting paper. 199 b/w images of the 'snapshot' variety 3 spots evident were photos probably removed. Approximately 10% captioned with white ink no images examined out of the album so additonal captions may be present on versos. Album: 8-3/4" x 1`2-1/2". Images: range from 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" to 2-5/8" x 3-5/8" tp 3-1/4" x 4-1/2" though the bulk are the latter. A visual record of a unidentified soldier's Korean service and while as expected many are 'buddy' shots eg "Xmas 1952" there is also a goodly percentage of location e.g. "Korean Festival" & "Train Station in Seoul" & service related images e.g. a number of photographs show Corsair aircraft & "Inside a Sabre Jet" as well as some action images "Accident on the way to Seoul. July 1952" and "Loading Planes with Bombs". A nice primary visual source documenting one man's tour in Korea during 1952. unknown books

Four pages of advertisements. A scarce work of fiction for young adults with a dual moral lesson about the poor in which the anonymous author attributes their misery to the surplus of labor caused by mechanization. The "increasing depravity of the lower orders" is a result of economic forces not moral turpitude. This patriotic call to duty is accompanied by an appeal for the public to buy bonds of Second Liberty Loan subscriptions of which ran from October 1 until and ended October 27 1917. Interestingly this quote was adopted by the leading American suffragist Alice Paul who was imprisoned for protesting with a banner bearing Wilson's words while the loan campaign was running on October 20. An English language version of this poster was published reading "Don't Let Swindlers Persuade You to Part with Your Liberty Bonds or War Savings Stamps". Similar posters were published in Italian Hebrew/Yiddish Russian and Polish. This poster includes the additional line 'Pozor na Spekulantov' which translates to "Beware of Speculators!" War loan posters like this one were produced in great volume during the First World War to encourage people to support the war effort financially. The poster is in good condition with minor tears to edges and some staining along lower left margin. Notations in ink of inventory numbers deaccessioned by the Long Island Historical Society 1923 as noted verso. unknown books
