Image measures 7 x 8.5".<br/><br/> This beautifully hand colored schoolgirl or schoolboy manuscript map of Canaan and Palestine Israel or Holy Land covers from Arish in northern Sinai north beyond Beirut. The Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea are included. Essentially two maps on the same sheet the left hand map depicts the region as it existed during Biblical times when it was called Canaan. The Twelve Tribes of Israel are identified along with ancient place names. Topography is beautifully rendered.<br><br>The right hand side map covers the same region but is not labeled except for the title 'Palestine'. Territorial divisions are color coded. The map is in good condition with vivid hand color. On thin paper with minor foxing and toning. Top margin with some manuscript text cut off. <br><br>This map dates to circa 1880 and was most likely made by a student or apprentice as training in geography drafting and penmanship. Manuscript map-making was a useful educational tool in the 19th century a period of imperialism and increased world trade in which geography grew significantly as a field of study.<br><br>In the United States and northwestern Europe reform movements that sought to improve the quality and accessibility of childhood education pushed for the inclusion of geography in school curricula. One common method of teaching was the making of manuscript maps. Working from wall maps globes and atlases students were made to meticulously hand-reproduce maps in pen and ink and with watercolor. Such exercises not only provided a way to review and retain geographical knowledge but they also functioned as training in penmanship calligraphy and drafting. This map is a lovely document that straddles the line between art and geography.<br/><br/> unknown books

There is no date or indication of whom the photographer might be but an occasional automobile indicates a time frame of about 1930. Views are in the smaller towns outside of Mexico City with a couple of exceptions. They all indicate a trained professional photographer's eye. See photos. A scarce survivor of cinema ephemera the broadside presented the Russian movies to be screened on June 25 1937 at the Paris World Fair known as the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne in Paris. As advertised the films were all original with French subtitles and included "Vers le Pole Nord" "20me Fete du Travail en U. R. S. S" and "Le Depute de la Baltique" Baltic Deputy - the Russian drama an early forerunner of Soviet historic realism which encapsulated the 1917 Revolution through the eyes of botanist and physiologist Kliment Timiriazev. 1890151098N.p. n.d.: 1890 1890. Octavo pp. 1-9 10-56 four illustrations original light blue wrappers printed in black sewn. First edition. The July 1889 find in Nampa Idaho of a small human figure during a well-drilling operation caused intense scientific controversy during the late nineteenth century. Unmistakably made by human hands it was found at a depth of 320 feet which would appear to place its age far before the expected arrival of man in this part of North America. The anonymous author's satire on the find pages 9-35 of this booklet presents a solution to this mystery a tale of an antediluvian civilization in Idaho and the cataclysmic destruction of its principal city Megistosthenople by earthquake or volcanic eruptions. Wrappers chipped at edges two clear tape reinforcements to spine a very good copy that is internally clean and fine. Rare. General wear soiling and age with surface abrasions scratches and old stains to margins; crudely placed in frame without backing or mat; Good. A rustic but quite charming juvenile production in which a large central portrait of Uncle Sam is flanked by images demonstrating proper safety techniques for young workers. The truck at center right bears the insignia "U.S. CCC" and most of the figures are uniformed leading us to the conclusion that this poster was created as part of a Civilian Conservation Corps youth project probably meant to be displayed in a common-room or barracks. The CCC brought together youth from all walks of life -- including many from inner city urban environments -- to work in largely rural settings; in such a context we imagine such advice as "A falling tree may strike some one near you" may truly have been life-saving. unknown books

First separate edition. Utopian proposal by "practical men" who specifically distance themselves from the impractical utopians to make realistic projections of a future society. Probably an offprint from a larger work also published in 1893. Pressure in the Reichstag by the Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands SPD forced a number of social and political reforms in Germany during the late nineteenth century. Ferdinand August Bebel 1840-1913 whose ideas and comments are often mentioned in the text was a German socialist politician writer and orator. He became the leading figure of the social democratic movement in Germany and from 1892 until his death served as chairman of the Social Democratic Party of Germany. Image measures 18 x 12.5".<br/><br/> This pen and ink map of Italy was produced around the middle of the 19th century likely by a student or apprentice as training in geography drafting and penmanship. The relative simplicity of the map suggests that the student was working from a school atlas as opposed to a more elaborate source. Major roads rivers and cities are all labeled in French but the anonymous cartographer has clearly paid more attention to correctly rendering the coastlines of the peninsula and the surrounding islands of Sardinia Corsica and Sicily. The railroad from Switzerland to the Mediterranean Sea is also indicated with dotted black line. The overall coloring of the map corresponds to common patterns of the day with a spectrum of blues used to highlight the peninsula and fill the surrounding water. The most striking feature of the map however is likely the rendering of mountains in a light brown watercolor wash intended to mimic the subtle technique used on engraved maps of the period. A finely written title at the top is flanked by a painter's palette in a black circle on the right and the Italian flag on the left. The map is in good condition on thick Lion drawing paper. Three pinholes in the top margin with paper watermark. No man of ordinary observation can pass through the streets of New York or Philadelphia without meeting numerous living witnesses of the misery which exists in both of those cities and especially in the former. Enough can be seen in Boston to make any benevolent heart ache daily for suffering humanity. But still the amount is less in proportion to population than in either of the other two cities. Through the influence of better laws for education intellectual culture the best preservative from vice and crime is more generally diffused in Boston than in Philadelphia; and from its geographical position Boston is not like New York the common resort of the squalid poverty that seeks refuge on our shores from Europe." A fairly nuanced sociological criminal and economic argument for temperance among the laboring classes pointing to the savings in cost of drinks and to the economic advantages of sober fathers; additional aspersions are cast as well on adulteration of wines and liquors. Originally published as a series in Boston Daily Times here collected and published with a prefatory Advertisement dated May 1841 and signed by a committee of Boston advocates of temperance. Character set of 108 die-cuts in various colors pink green black red brown orange etc. undated second half of the 20th century; housed in a silk-covered box in black and red with gilt title to lid and two faux-bone fasteners; paper-cuts approx. 5 x 3 1/2 each in a protective tissue wrap; box - 6 3/4 x 5 x 1; one of the paper cuts with a small crease to upper corner the rest in fine condition; box with minor wear to edges and corners - in near fine condition. An uncommon complete set each paper cut represents one of the 108 characters of the 14th-century Chinese novel "Outlaws of the March" also translated as "Water Margin" and attributed to Shi Nai'an. The faces costumes weapons and names and nicknames are incredibly finely detailed. As they are all created by hand it has been said that no two sets are completely the same. The Chinese art of paper cutting using scissors or knives is one of the country's oldest and most popular folk arts and dates back tot he second century AD after the invention of paper by Cai Lun in the year 105. s. n. unknown books

Twenty three specimens mounted on nine loose sheets of cream stock; paper 10 1/2 x 8; specimens with various sizes some quite large ie. approx. 7 1/2 x 9; most subtitled in manuscript in French with place date etc.; a few minor spots; very good or better condition. A beautiful collection of seaweed it was assembled along the coast of Mostaganem province in the northwest of Algeria. Some of the places identified included La Salamandre Karouba ie. Kharouba the City of Mostaganem and others. Seeing the careful penmanship on the paper and the time period the samples were most probably collected by a French lady in Colonial Algeria. It was around this time the mid-19th century when the seaweed-collecting craze was sweeping Europe and becoming a favorite pastime for ladies whose access to scientific explorations was otherwise largely restricted. Furthermore as seaweed was fragile and somewhat difficult to handle it was also a matter of pride for one to be able to carefully and artfully arrange and preserve the specimens.
